Thom, I wouldn't describe the Zenith system as "really good". It's adaquate. The week links in the designare that the arms that actuate the cables running to the carbs are bothat the right hand side and the friction adjustment mechanism is a pain. One cable is only about a foot long but the other is closer to three feet long. Admittedly, once I got mine set up it seems to have stayed where it was set and haven't noticed any issues with vibrations. After about 40 hrs and seven months of flying I plan on verifying my carb balance when I get a chance next week. From: "Thom Riddle" <riddletr@gmail.com> Ron, Zenith has a really good way to avoid the cable splitter entirely. The cockpit throttle controls directly operate a pivot arm mechanism mounted on the engine side of the firewall. The arms on the pivot mechanism are rigidly interconnected to each other and move the carb throttle arms via short straight cables. Much simpler and less tortuous than long sheathed cables that can start to bind after many hours years of service. -------- Thom Riddle Buffalo, NY (9G0) Kolb Slingshot SS-021 Jabiru 2200A #1574 Tennessee Prop 64x32

    From: Richard Girard <aslsa.rng@gmail.com>
Awhile back I posted a request for information about the compatibility of Pennzoil Air Cooled two stroke oil and Pennzoil Marine two stroke oil. The question came up again because a customer's airplane with a 582 has Air Cooled in both the injection and rotary valve reservoirs and my stock of Air Cooled is nearly gone. This morning I called Shell's technical hot line (Shell Oil owns the Pennzoil brand). The answer is, Air Cooled *CANNOT* be mixed with Marine or any other oil that meets the TC-W3 specs. The additive packages are incompatible and will cause coagulation. So, the systems have to be purged of the Air Cooled oil when a change over is made (Air Cooled is no longer available once stocks are gone, if they aren't already). So, if you or your customers are using Pennzoil Air Cooled you might want to start thinking about the necessary service to purge the system(s). Hi Rick, The TC-W3 marine oils has always been a bad idea to mix with other oils. If you use such an oil and you need to add some other oil because you are out or away from home then you may have a mixing issue. Here is a good 2 stroke oil that seems to have a vary good track record and engine longevity. http://www.amsoil.com/storefront/ait.aspx -------- Roger Lee Tucson, Az. From: "ejessee" <eejessee@us.ibm.com>
I have decided that I can no longer fly without heat shields on my carbs. Hot starts are very difficult and I'm afraid it is dangerous. The Amanda Franklin situation really scares me... though Rotax wasn't involved. My condolences to her family. The Rotax diagram indicates that the factory drip pan/heat shields cannot be used if the air filters are connected directly to the carbs. Is this true? Anyone with experience? -------- Ernest Jessee N4931M Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=341948#341948

Hi Ernest,. It is true they won't fit depending on the type of filter, but the majority do fit in this category. They protrude too low. It is fairly easy to make a set though out of some thin gauge steel. -------- Roger Lee Tucson, Az. At last I am back in the air. Thank you to all of you who responded to my question about possible broken wires in the ignition system: I did not find any. The culprits were the electronic modules which have aged to the point were they are unable to produce reliable sparks at normal cranking speed. I replaced one of them (cost me 928 Euros) and the engine starts very well now.
