I'm putting my 912 into the Kitfox and am asking myself why I need the
balance tube between the intake manifolds. I don't remember any auto
application having one, and we balance the carbs anyway. Does anyone
have a mechanical reason for maintaining this connection?
Thanks,
Guy Buchanan

Hi Guy,
The simple answer is "Death from vibration-induced engine failure".
Unbalanced engines vibrate excessively.
Automotive engines are substantially more more solidly reinforced since
there is a much smaller weight penalty.
Do what the factory says if you want to add many more hours!

Guy,
Start the engine once without the balance tube, and you will know why it is needed.
Even an engine with perfectly synchronized/balanced carbs will be pretty
rough at idle without the tube, as you will see if you try it.

Hi Guy,
These guys are right. Even if you sync the carbs they will slowly get unbalanced
and at different rpms they may be off slightly. having that tube makes these
small corrections and it is an absolute necessity.
When they get unbalanced and without a balance tube you might have one side of
the engine trying to run at 5000 rpm and the other at 5550-5100 rpm.
