Roger,
I did the same thing. I replaced my Warp taper tip ,nickel edge with a
lighter Kiev. In addition to a turbine smooth engine in cruise, the shutdown
is flawless which it sure wasn't before ! AND at very low rpm there is no
longer any gearbox noise. The Warp now makes a good wall mount decoration
for my hanger. Anyone want to buy it ? It has the hub for the early mid 90's
912UL.

Subject: | Re: 912ULS Shudder on Shutdown |
Though I never had that problem with my warp drive (68" 3 blade), I now have a
powerfin F model (70" 3-blade) on my tornado/912ULS and it's smooth as silk at
idle and shutdown.
I did talk to Daryl at WD back when I was trying to debug my vibration problem
with my WD and he assured me it was within the MOI limits of the 912 gearboxes.
And like I said, I never had any kind of problems with mine.
The 3 blade IVO medium that was on the plane when I bought it, tho, was a different
story. The idle was significantly rougher and the engine seemed to spin for
an eternity after killing the mags. But that thing weighs almost a full 10lbs
more than my Powerfin!
I checked my friction torque a while back and it was about 450in/lbs, somewhere
in there. About the middle of the range Rotax specifies anyway. And there was
no problem with the Warp Drive on mine.
So perhaps it is a low friction torque on the box?

Subject: | 447/503 discontinued? |
Does anyone know if the 447 and 503 have finally been discontinued? I noticed that
BRP no longer lists them on their web site, i.e. at:
http://www.brp-powertrain.com/en/desktopdefault.aspx/tabid-201/356_read-319/
you only see the 582 and the 912/914. Also some places like CPS don't have them
listed in their engine sections anymore.
I know the 447 was on the chopping block, but I thought the 503 was going to stick
around for a while.
Just trying to decide if I should just go ahead and sell my 2-stroke toolset and
just make some other decisions about future planes, etc.
Thanks,
LS

I fly a Talon - an ultralight-type E-LSA, powered by a 582. I need a new radiator.
I've been told that it's not necessary to buy a new radiator from Rotax -
that a car radiator will do every bit as well. Do any of you have any experience
using a car radiator with a 582?
Also, I need to replace my Westach water temp gauge. Again, I've been told that
you can buy a water temp gauge at an auto parts store and pay significantly less
than for a Westach. Any thoughts?

Ok, thanks Arty. Well guess I'll have to go into mourning for a while then. I was
thinking about a 503 powered plane for my next plane, but even with 10 years
of parts support, that would cut it pretty close. My planned project would have
still been a few years out before I could start on it.
Fortunately, tho, that means I get to keep my titan ;).

Hi Arty,
I believe a car radiator will work fine, but I don't have any personal experience
with it on the 582. You might send an email to Mark Smith at Tristate Kite
sales:
http://www.trikite.com/
He's been using the 582 for decades (since it came out basically) and I think he
uses car radiators pretty much exclusively. So he'd have the definite poop on
which radiator to use.

Arty:
Stewart has made gauges for many, many years. They even supply gauges and
oil coolers for certified aircraft. So, yes... Go for it. for it. And I'm
sure you know as an experimental you can do this without any issues.

Hi Arty,
The answer is yes and yes. Go to a junk yard and pick up a small used radiator.
You can use any water temp gauge for the most part that was designed for that.

A car radiator is too big for anything that travels faster than a PPC. What
you want is the radiator from a Honda Sabre or Magna motorcycles. I've
converted two 582 powered Kolb Mk III's and both work perfectly even in the
Kansas heat. See the attached article I wrote for the newsletter of our
local EAA chapter.
