Subject: 914 carb leak
Hi all, I am traveling with my Euopa 914 and I am having problems. I had a leak from the fuel bowl so I removed it last week to inspect it. I checked the bowl surface a glass sheet for distortion and it seemed okay so I re installed it with a small amount of Loctite 515. I test flew it and all seemed good. I flew 3 hours to Lincoln, Nebraska with no issues. I did use full boost to take off out of Lincoln and I could smell fuel again. I found that at 10,500' I had to back the MP down to 24" to stop the smell so I am guessing that the bowl leaks at anything above ambient pressure. I intend to remove the bowl on Monday to inspect and the question I have to the group is how tight am I supposed to do the nut on the bottom of the fuel bowl. My concern is that I might distort it if I do it too tight. My other question is, it it acceptable practice to use a fuel resistant gasket cement? Thank, Paul

Hi Paul, Have you installed a new gasket? If not I would do that first. I see lots of leaky carb bowl gaskets and usually a new one takes care of the issue. -------- Roger Lee Tucson, Az. Hi Paul, As Roger said, try a new gasket.Cork gaskets from Bing are supposedly better than the paper ones from Rotax. And it is indeed possible to over-torque the bolt on the bottom of the bowl. Over- torque can distort the bowl causing the brass posts that the floats slide up and down on to splay outward. Not good. I can't remember what the proper torque is, but I remember I needed to use a crow-foot on the torque wrench. The torque for the bowl screw is 48 in/lbs. It's in the parts manual. -------- Roger Lee Tucson, Az. Light Sport Repairman - Maintenance Rated Rotax Repair Center - Heavy Maint.
