    Subject: Strange Problem
Rotax 9112 ULS in an RV-12. Operation completely normal. Began/completed annual condition inspection. New spark plugs...gapped to 0.023" type per Rotax manaul New fuel pump with the drain fitting installed. Air filters serviced w'/ K&N "oil" Carbs attached tightly. Air filters attached correctly. Enrichment (choke) operation normal...stop to stop. Throttle normal. Carb springs checked. On run up, mag drop 350 rpm; normal was around 150. Both sides. Static RPM 3800 then more throttle reduced rpm and engine ran rough. Found one spark plug off (fell off or didn't get put back on...don't know which) Ran on ground....all OK Static RPM 4975, mag drops 150 or less; both the same Put cowling back on the went to fly this morning. Same problem...static rpm way too low, as above Mag drops 350 or so.... Aborted flight attempt. :Pulled all plugs...gaps all OK. All VERY back...less than one hour on new plugs. Reinstalled the plugs. Ran engine...normal rpm; normal mag drop, Fuel pressure was 5.1psi with original fuel pump; runs 6.8 psi with new pump. Pulled fuse on boost electric pump while engine running...no change in psi. Engine now running great..starts instantly....rpms all normal...fuel flow normal... I don't know what's going on...am very concerned about this problem coming and going with nor apparent (to me anyhow) reason. Your guesses/hints/surmises all would be appreciated. Looks like a clasic case of "It was working 'til I fixed it!" John

Hi John, Your plug gaps are too tight for summer weather. Open the gaps to .027 and the mag drop will change. In addition you may have too much oil on the air filter which is a very common error. It needs the lightest of a spray. So light you should still see some of the white gauze underneath. The oil will spread with the air flow. Too much oil restricts air flow more than you may think. Too much oil reduces the air flow. Change these two things and I think it will be good to go. p.s. Your WOT setting flat and level at your average altitude should be between 5500-5600 for the best overall performance that would encompass several items. -------- Roger Lee Tucson, Az. - Roger, you may have answered my problem as well.- I installed a brand new, pre-oiled K&N filter on my 447, and the static rpm was only 5100.- It should have been about 6500.- I did notice lots of oil on the new one, and wondered about that.- I'll put the old filter back on, and see what happens.- When it stops raining. ------------------------- -------------- Bill Sullivan ------------------------- -------------- Windsor Locks, Ct. ------------------------- -------------- Kolb FS, 447 --- On Wed, 6/6/12, Roger Lee <ssadiver1@yahoo.com> wrote: From: Roger Lee <ssadiver1@yahoo.com> Subject: RotaxEngines-List: Re: Strange Problem Hi John, Your plug gaps are too tight for summer weather.
