Subject: | High EGTs when Climbing |
Hi
Have Rotax 80hp UL, experiencing high EGTs when climbing. Today outside temp 85F.
One EGT 1605F the other 1565F. Oil and cylinder temps in normal range. Water temp
also in normal range. If I lower the A/C nose and reduce the power the EGTs drop
to top of
the normal range.
Is it ok to continue climbing with high EGTs if oil, cylinder head, and water temps
are in normal range?
Thanks, Mike

Hi Mike:
It does not make sense to climb at an angle that produces high temps. The
heat has to go somewhere and that put stress on cylinders and cooling
systems and of course the exhaust system that directly has to handle the
higher temps. If all it takes is a lower AOA then just do it. You will be
saving the engine.
Don't even start with a high AOA, keeping FULL POWER in is OK as long as
there is air for cooling. Rase the nose and your air diminishes. And you
problems begin to increase.
Also remember - Heat is a LAGGING device, just like the Temp Gauge. By the
time you see Red Line the temps are ABOVE RED LINE. Just like Air Speed...
By the time you see an Indicated Air Speed the true air speed is past that
point.

Hi Mike,
The EGT's typically are the more stable temps in climb compared to all the others
like oil and coolant because it is more regulated by fuel consistency and not
as subjected to air flow like coolant or oil with air passing over the radiator.
I would do some checking on all temps and sensors before I would believe
everything is okay except the EGT's.
