Westach's hour meter can be hooked up to the AC outlet of the dynamo
(alternator). If the alternator isn't developing power, and the diode
bridge in the regulator will keep it from feeding back from the battery,
the hour meter doesn't run. You can see the wiring instructions here;
http://www.westach.com/instructions/2C10-2.jpg
Don't feel like the Lone Ranger here Damien, my Kolb Mk III had a Honeywell
hour meter. During a rebuild of the aircraft when I thought I had the
original electrical system disabled I discovered that a wire I thought had
no power drove the hour meter until the battery was completely discharged.
I ran it on a bench power supply while I was working on the aircraft until
it ran through all it's digits and got back to where it should be. After
all that I discovered the Westach gauge and bought it.

Yes, They are easy to install, but you won't get the full benefit unless you also
change out the fly wheel, but it still helps. The fly wheel helps the timing.
They are almost a plug and ply except for connecting two wires from the 6 pin
plug to your starter solenoid.
