Subject: | Re: Rotax 914 Oil Change |
Hi All.
Today i cut open the oil filter, this is the first oil filter i have cut open,
but my gut feeling tells me this was the first time anybody has bothered to do
it on this aircraft, and from what i feel many others the same.
However, i do not know what is acceptable in the filter.
I could not see any large particles of 1 mm or 1/2 mm, I could see brown carbon
deposits, I then looked at the paper in the sunlight and could not see any metal
on the oil covered paper.
However after throwing it away i noticed my fingers felt a bit gritty to small
to see, but i could see a few very small pin head of silver in the sunlight, very
small, and it was not apparent when inspecting the paper .
As a green horn i would say all was OK , what do you think.
Alan

Hi Alan,
Sounds like all was okay.
If you really want to see what's in an oil filter. Cut the paper element out. Put
it in a small jar with about 1" of fuel and shake it up fairly well. The remove
the filter and look at it. It will most likely be very clean as the fuel
washed it off. Now pour the fuel and oil residue through a white paper towel.
What ever was on that filter element will now stand out like a sore thumb against
the white paper towel surface. Usually I only see a few carbon flecks and
once in a while a chrome colored fleck.
