Hugh, You can check your temp gauge by testing it in boiling water. Jim Butcher Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=465154#465154

Hi. Just my way of "benchtesting any water probe" I tested mine by.Removing the inside instrument cluster gauge from the craf t (note the wiring for that gauge setup ) removed the probe from the engine block with care.. . (1) using a electronic digital home/kitchen thermomet er and a (2) you will need 12 volt battery for wiring hookup (i used my mo torcycle battery) (3) hook up the wiring to the gauge and to the probe and the battery as per schematic diagram for that type of gauge. Remeber to gro und your gauge by using a Small alligator clip type. get it all set up "BEF ORE " heating the water.(4) Use a 12 inch diameter dipper with about 2 inch es of regular tap water in it. turn the electric stove on "low" temperature first. ( possibly, use oven mitts to prevent hot steam while doing testing) use a piece of string to just put the engine probe into about 1/2 inch in the water, again make sure that just the lower part ONLY of the probe just touch the water (remember these probes operate on electric resistance me asurement) also put your electronic cooking gauge in the water (tie the co oking electronic gauge to the handle of the dipper to prevent it from falli ng into the water,if this happens you will most likely ruin your cooking th ermometer). as the water continue to heat up slowlyyyyyyy from cooler to ho tter it will show precisely on the cooking thermometer. At the same time wa tch VISUALALLY and compare it to the Craft instrument gauge thst you are te sting, this will tell you if the sensor and also if the gauge is working pr operly, this will do 2 tests for you,it will show if it is both working acc uracy. Just use a good grade of 1" coolant hose. If the hose is n ot at least 2" away from and exhaust pipe put some heat shield on that area. H oses like Gates Green Stripe are 4 ply. Silicone hoses won't hurt, but aren't necessary. You are supposed to be changing hoses every 5 years along with other rubber parts. Not doing this is a roll of the dice. You have carb rubber sockets, engine mounts, carb diaphragm, carb balance tube rubber. As an example real Teflon hoses for an RV12 fuel system will run $550 (appr oximately). Those still have to go into fire sleeve and so would oil hoses. Most of the time leaks and cracking show up at the clamped area and not mid hose un less the hose is being rubbed or too close to an exhaust pipe. How do you inspec t hose under fire sleeve and under a clamp? For $550 I can buy all my hoses a couple times over and that would take car e of me for 10-15 years. Flying safe and with some peace of mind is worth your time. If you can't af ford to keep a plane's maint. up then flying may not be the best hobby for you. Throwing any old piece of hose you can on the engine and clamping it in place may make you a hazard waiting to hurt you and your passenger not to mention the high cost of any repair. Ask Huge what all this is going to cost by the time he's done? -------- Roger Lee Tucson, Az. So true ! but > You are supposed to be changing hoses every 5 years along with other rubber parts. Not doing this is a roll of the dice. I think you just found out that isn't worth it. Silicone hoses don't have time limits so you can avoid to change them according to legal authorities... Just use a good grade of 1" coolant hose. If the hose is not at least 2" away from and exhaust pipe put some heat shield on that area. Hoses like Gates Green Stripe are 4 ply. Silicone hoses won't hurt, but aren't necessary. You are supposed to be changing hoses every 5 years along with other rubber parts. Not doing this is a roll of the dice. I think you just found out tha t isn't worth it. If this was an issue the entire Rotax engine users around the world would b e busting hoses. -------- Roger Lee Tucson, Az.
