How can I measure the amount of battery charging current being put out by t

Hi hugh as a ammeter has to be connected in series with the output of the r
egulator I think the output is probably 30 amp which will be greater than t
he digital meter usually 10 amp.
You can get a cheap analog DC 30 amp ammeter with a seperate shunt from eba
y and connect that.
Alternatively you can get a relatively cheap DC 30-0-30 amp clipon ammeter
again from ebay and clip over regulator output cable or battery cable will
no be very accurate but probably ok for your needs
