I went through several "bi-metal" blades before I decided to use other tools for
the tough stuff-
my 1940s vintage Craftsman bandsaw is a 2-speed: On/Off . I've been using the
same blade now for 3
years and it still cuts al like buttuh! Use of less archaic machinery will undoubtedly
offer more
options, but they lack the "personality" of Ol' Blue- & besides, it was paid for
many, many moons
ago..... 8-)

Chris,
Can you specify what page of the MSC catalog you are looking on? 6"X9" sounds
much to large. Bench mounted discs tend be be sized 6" X 1", 6" X 0.5" and 8"
X 1". These items are all over $20 each. Judging by the price of the items you
are quoting, I think you are looking at the 2" and 3" RoLoc discs? Please clarify.

For a picture of the aircraft spruce resivoirs on the pedals, see
http://www.lazy8.net/rv8.html go to the plumbing and wiring page, halfway
down.
For your light dimmer, use a linear taper. Make sure you use a big fat TO-3
can output transistor.

Hello-
I am interested in mounting a brake reservoir to the
pilot pedals. Anyone have a picture of this?
Can't seem to get in to rv-8.com - someone had
mentioned there might be a picture there.
Thanks

I mentioned this in a previous post. I bought a box of 3M 7447 6X9" pads
(qty 20) The pad itself has stenciled on it "TYPE A VERY FINE" and they
worked great for all prepping skins for priming and after, painting. I split
the contents with another builder and I still have a couple of them unused
after finishing my RV-6A

I have a definite favorite - Prosnip. Made in Dewitt Nebraska or at least
that is the city on them. I use the red one for almost all sheet metal
cutting.
I also have a full set of Wiss and a yard sale green one which I think is a
Prosnip copy but it isn't very good.
I don't have a band saw, yet. I cut a lot of aluminum on my table saw with
plywood blades and with planer blades. I can't quite picture using the
band saw on anything less than 0.040, is that right?

I have been a firm supported of the King KT-76A. It is not the highest tech
out there, but I have had three of them in my previous airplanes over the
last 15 years and they have always worked flawlessly. They are available as
reman units for around $1000.

I am planning on using Van's firewall shields for passing my cables through
the firewall. Where can I find plastic grommets to use with the shields? I
looked at ACS, Wicks, etc. I want to avoid rubber as it will dry out and
have to be replaced.
The shields I am talking about are at:

Hi All,
I want to thank all of you who took the time to help me with my decision. I
received dozens of replies, many of which were off-list. The general
consensus is that they are all wonderful airplanes, and you just need to
examine your own preferences and situation. I plan to retire in a few years,
so I will most likely become a "repeat offender" anyway.
I'm leaning heavily toward the RV8A. I plan to head down to Van's soon and
go for that $60,000.00 ride.

I used to have a quarter inch drive click type torque wrench but it gave up
so I took it apart. Guess what is inside this former USAF tool? A tiny
little beam type torque wrench! Yes, just like the type one opinionated
builder told me was just for use on Fords. Apparently, all torque wrenches
operate on the bending beam and pointer principle. The click type are nice
when it is hard to get the eye into the right position, however.
Ideally, I would have three. One, a quarter inch would do most of the work
but where can one get one??? A 3/8 drive could handle all but the prop and
some engine work and for those a simple and cheap open beam wrench would be
adequate.
Maybe someone will confirm my understanding that:
1 - the idea that the click or the dial give superior accuracy is
just a myth
2 - the simple open beam never needs calibration so long as the
pointer comes to zero.

The best I have used in recent years is the Garmin GTX 327. I installed one
in my RV-4 about 3 years ago and have ALWAYS been glad with my decision. It
is a push button, solid state unit. There are plenty of gizmos if you want
them ( I don't use them myself) What is important is that I live and fly
through Class B airspace all the time. It is 4 times faster to switch
frequencies that the rotating knob units, the display is great, and the
Mode C altitude display is truly worth having. Whatever your choice,
remember that in todays environment, a good transponder is important.YOU
may not do much with it, but ATC radar relies on your transponder, and the
larger aircraft equipped with TCAS will only "see" you if you are using a

John and others who use in-cabin reservoirs:
What has your experience been with respect to leaking and spilling?
I've got a "Reservoir Dog" for the stock reservoir I was planning on using,
and I guess I could order a 2nd one no problem (from Alex Peterson), but I'm
a little concerned about the possibility of brake fluid leaking (even
slightly) in the cabin, ruining carpet, etc. Is this a valid concern for
somebody who will be doing occasional light aerobatics?

I was also intending to install a tried-and-true KT-76A in my RV-7, but when
I read the specs on the Garmin GTX-320A I was sold. And I'm not much of a
Garmin fan. But it's shorter & lighter than the KT-76A, and not really
any/much more expensive if you hunt down a good deal. Southeast Aerospace
had a decent price last time I checked...$1195 brand new. If anybody knows

Anyway, the GTX-320A is 0.9 lb lighter and 1.8" shorter than the KT-76A.

One application where the simple beam-pointer type wrench seems to be
clearly superior involves torquing prop bolts that thread into bushings
in the flange. The amount of torque that is required to just turn the
bolt through the thick prop hub can be considerable, and should be added
to the manufacturers recommended torque value to achieve the final
target torque. The beam-type wrench allows you to back off the bolt a
turn or two, measure the torque to just turn the bolt, then continue to
set the final calculated value, all in one step.
In certain applications the turning friction can be a large percentage
of the final value. On the last wood prop I mounted, the turning
friction of one of the bolts was about 6 ft-lbs, and the manufacturer
called out 17 ft-lbs as a recommended value. The specific target for
this bolt would then be about 23 ft-lbs, and just click-torquing it to
17 ft-lbs would result in a seriously under-torqued bolt. I guess you
could measure the turning friction with a click-gauge by trying various
settings in a trial-and-error fashion, but it seems a cumbersome
process.

Hi Jim,
You didn't specify if your intercom is stereo or not.
If your intercom is *not* stereo, either type headset will probably work
fine using mono phone jacks because most stereo headsets have a
stereo/mono switch meaning you just set the switch to mono for use with
your intercom.
If your intercom is stereo, you need stereo phone jacks. You will also
need a switch to disconnect the wire feeding the 'ring' terminal of the
jack feeding the *mono* headset. The mono headset will hear only one
channel of a stereo source when set up this way. You shouldn't just
plug a mono set into a stereo jack because the sleeve portion of the
mono plug will short the ring terminal to ground. This will be easy to
see when you obtain a stereo jack & insert a stereo plug vs a mono plug
in the jack. Note that if you only insert the mono plug until you get
the first 'click' of insertion, the tip will (usually) make contact with
the ring terminal of the jack & it will work without shorting out
anything and hear the 'ring' channel instead of the 'tip' channel. I
wouldn't recommend this technique, though.
There are ways to sum the two stereo channels to feed a mono headset,
but the hookup is more complex & needs a diagram rather than text.
Email me direct if you want more info.

Can anyone refer me to a photo or two of the air seal installation on the air
box for a RV-6? I'm having some trouble understanding how this should go on
because of the nonuniform and tapered geometry of the snout of the airbox.
Also, how many and where do the slits in the air seal go that the
instructions say are necessary to allow the bottom cowling to go into place?
Finally, in actual use, how do you guys that are passed this get the air seal
around the air scoop extension when you put the lower cowling on? Sorry for
so many questions in one message.

FWIW, just a word of caution about cheap and used torque wrenches folks. I
once bought a 1/4 in. clicker type torque wrench from Harbor freight that was
advertised as being 5 percent accurate from 15 to somewhere around 150 inch
pounds for what I thought was an irresistible price. At the time I worked
for a company with a calibration lab so I asked the guys to check my new
prize for accuracy. To my chagrin they presented me with a calibration curve
that showed that my wrench was reading between 100 and 150 percent high in
the low ranges around 15 to 25 inch pounds that are required for AN3 bolts.
It didn't get to within 5% until somewhere around 80 or 90 inch pounds.

loose the hardware (except for the cap) and install the tube. All the

So far (52 hours), I have not had any leaks or other problems. I have done
only 'gentleman' aerobatics.
I might worry about the reservoirs hitting the firewall if I had very long
legs, but at 5-11, I have lots of room.

All tools are not created equal, and everyone should do and use what works for
them. I know and
understand fully when you relate to "OL Blue". I also have several tools which
fall into that category

Jim,
The obvious question (and I'm not being a wiseacre) is: Why would you build
a plenum next time? Does your airplane go faster/run cooler/look snazzier
than an identical airplane without the plenum?

Phil:
I installed Van's valve in my RV-4. It works fine. The only tricky part is
determining the orientation relative to the push-pull cable. You have to do
a little experimentation and fore thought to figure where to locate it. If
you like, I'd be glad to take a digital photo of my installation. I'll be
at the hangar Wed. Let me know.

The trick to making anything made of rubber (either natural, nitrile or
other) last forever is to coat it liberally (I know this will be difficult
for you right-wingers but do it anyway ;
) when new with DC4 or DC111
silicone grease before installing. Rubber parts so treated will last nearly
10 times as long, as the grease prevents the oils from drying out and
encapsulates the item against ozone attack. The only rubber items that have
disintegrated on my plane are those little items that didn't get this done at
installation.

That's my concern too. I'm 6'1", 34" inseam. My ground adjustable
pedals are currently loosely installed in the second slot from the
front. I don't have cushions to sit on yet, so I don't know if that
position will suit me or not. There is no way the forward-most position
will work.

The letter I sent was just one of over 300 comments. You need to make your
own. I have some instructions that I posted to other lists. Must have
missed this list. You can make comments about this rule that is now in place
and see if the TSA will modify it.
I was able to make an electronic comment on the NPRM 2003-14293. I thought
maybe some of the rest of you might have a need to do this so here are my
instructions and suggestions.
1. I went to: http://dms.dot.gov and clicked on the "comment/submissions"
tab. You can also do a NPRM search from this page.
2. I clicked continue on the next page.
3. After entering the docket number. You only need to enter 14293; the
digits after the dash. It then took me to the comment page. It is probably
best to enter in your personal data but it doesn't not seem to be
required.
4 .Enter you comment in the box and click on submit. That's all.
HINT! You can copy and paste in your comments so I composed and Spell
Checked it in Outlook Express but you could do the same copy and paste from
a word
processor. I need this to make me look intelligent.
If you want to see other's comments, go back to the main
page...http://dms.dot.gov scroll down to the open dockets list. Find the FAA
#2003-14293 and click on the number. It will take you to the received
comments page. The first comment is the TSA new rule.
