Yesterday, I received delivery of my RV9A empennage kit. I didn't tell my wife of course, but opening it all up was better than sex! (And it lasted longer too!). I have inventoried everything, and it all seems to be there. However, when looking at the doublers, I noticed there was a small but distinct bend in them. Is this ok, or should I request some new ones? The canopy doesn't even need a latch in flight. I don't think I could get it open if I tried. The pressure outside is a lot higher than inside. As far as getting a speed increase with a hole in the belly of the airplane. I'd like to know how. If I got any more pressure out, I'd implode. Once in cruise mode I don't bother looking at the airspeed indicator anyway. It'll read anything you want depending on the outside temp and altitude. I use a GPS to tell me how fast I'm going. I use the airspeed indicator for takeoff and landings. If a canopy swells in flight due to air pressure from the inside, the builder forgot to install the firewall. He reported this sucked the canopy back down onto the fuselage, eliminating reverse airflow at the rear and bulging at the sides. No data on whether this changed static pressure or actual airspeed though. But it would be easy to swap panels. Do you have any further info at this time Curtis? If there is an actual bend in the Doubler than yes you need a replacement. If there is a bow in the piece over the length of the Doubler than the important thing is that the holes are in the right location. The bow is from the fabrication process. Once the Doubler is cloced to the spars you should be ok. And for the sex part, I had to beg before the airplane, now she begs. I was told it WILL NOT work out of the box without this procedure, which involves going up with a laptop connected to the unit to perform the calibration. This is required to get the magnetic heading to read properly. 3) In approximately one month, the user calibration procedure will no longer be required on units shipped thereafter. 4) After the 100-unit production run, Dynon will mass produce a batch of about 1000 units. 5) Before any price increase goes into effect, we will have "adequate notice" and an opportunity to buy at the original price. I interpret this to mean: keep an eye on the web site, because that's where the price increase will be announced. While I am not an expert on the subject, I attended an aircraft seat building seminar and then built up my own seats in both my Grumman Cheetah and my RV-8. To my admittedly novice eye, these seat sets appear to be constructed with ordinary open-celled foam mixed with a one inch layer of medium Confor foam. In my build-ups, I used three inches of various density Confor foam combined with soft open celled foam to build up the edges and as a base.--This cost about $250 for my plane (Confor foam is REALLY expensive). So, if you purchase the same raw material as the kit, I'm guessing you could come in around $100 or so. Spend more and you could build yourself more comfort, with the seats customized to your needs. The slider is surprisingly simple and it would not be hard to make all the bits and pieces from the plans. To try and answer the questions. 1. There are milled nylon blocks which form the "front sliders" as it were, they are 3/4 x 3/4 x 15/16 blocks which attach to and run paralell with a longeron. No rollers here, friction/ loose fit. 2.There is a 1/2" hoop as it were which attach's to the "front screen" and to a longeron, is this your area of question? I'd be very surprised if there was any similarity between the 3 and 8 or 9. 3. The latch is a straight forward affair and may be compatable with other types like the 8 but it was designed a long time before the 8 was probably even thought about, see section F-F dwg 34, 1984 and onwards. I know I didn't help much. I had used a Lowrance to feed the NavAid..that worked just fine, but I wanted a back up in case the Lowrance pooped out at an inopportune monent. The iPAQ model 3765, I finally determined, has GRB GRC sentences of the NMEA 0183 data strings out put on pin #7 of the iPAQ plug, a red wire. I opened the cable about 6-inches from the plug, cut the red wire and taped it back...(see Control Vision Corp archive topic #632), and took the NMEA output from the iPAQ out to a small cylinder where a mic jack was installed. I can simply connect that into the panel mic jack that usually fed the Lowrance (for its 12-volts and the NMEA input data for the NavAid).... I got an immediate lock on indication on the Smart Coupler when I connected the iPAQ/AnywhereMap/GPS35 system into the existing Lowrance input. Finally !!! How long has it been since you had a pitot/static check? If the ASI works fine at low speeds and then goes haywire as speed picks up and interior pressures change, there has to be a leak somewhere. The reason for that slot is to be able to push the canopy all the way forward during an emergency release. Most do not make the cut since releasing the canopy in a hurry is not possible. To just take the canopy off, the cutouts are not needed. For those who have not, I have made a search of several potential sources to find an adaptor/extension for a 1/2" drive torque wrench that will fit in the space an turn the 5/8" head. (there is not room for a socket or box end wrench or a crowfoot) Hartzell has an adaptor/extension for $300 - no way. MSC has nothing, Snap-on has nothing. The local prop shop person said that their solution was to weld a socket onto a 5/8" open end wrench to avoid the cost of a one time use tool. Then, I looked at my Sears "Professional" 5/8" combination open end/box end 12 point wrench. Voila!!! The 1/2" drive of the torque wrench fits well in the 5/8" box end. With the proper correction for the combination wrench length, it works as an adaptor/extension that fits in the space. To make a long story short, I had raw gas exit my cowl as a 1/4 in. stream. It cleaned the center belly back past the aft wing line where separation and vaporization got the better of it. The fumes got the better of me (severe). They entered through the tail cone and and flowed forward into the cockpit. There are several sources that document this effect. If you are concerned about CO getting to your nose, then I suggest that you do nothing about reverse air flow through the fuselage and you will get the greatest concentration. On the other hand, you could do as pointed out by Ron VanB.....when he described systems used to improve air flow in Comanche airframes. Exhaust system outlet design can help keep exhaust out of the boundary layer. Also: Monitor CO, especially on long flights If you decide to do your own aroma tests Don't use Gas, OK? Try essence of Skunk in your smoke system. Tip: Boot the aileron and elevator push tubes. Cover those big lightening holes in the aft vertical bulkhead. Open air flow passages through the baggage area. Install a low pressure venting devise in the aft fuselage at approximately the leading edge of the tail section. Enjoy the greatly improved comfort. Oh, I forgot, while you're at it clamp down the canopy and fix the leak in the static system. I froze each winter until I fabricated the piece as suggested in the early RVator magazine. Yes, it was good for at least 3mph and I now can fly without a jacket in the winter.(I have a heater). My hangermate also has an RV-3 and a canopy hook is installed with the same results. I went a step farther and replaced the inspection plates with a plate with 20 3/16in holes shaped/looks like a cheese grader. This keeps the wings from pumping air into the cockpit so strong. I don't need boots around the flight controls now. By the way, I installed Van's two piece wheel pants and yes they produced the additional airspeed as advertised. When Jerry and I finished ours, He did all the initial flights. He flew through a not so rare rain shower which left much water on the baggage area cover. I went up with him as leak observer; in the fumbling around, my jacket sleeve nearly got sucked out the canopy side gap above the wing, which makes sense. When we put a good "V" seal in this area to keep the outflow in check, the inflow from the rear skirt diminished substantially. We did use "V" seal on the rear skirt facing backward to further hamper inflow. SEAL THE OUTFLOW ABOVE THE WING FIRST, then work on the incidentals. Our 6A has all the old "go slow" leg fairings, wheel pants, step on each side; and when flown beside an identical 6A with no steps, "go fast" fairings and pants, weighing 220 lbs. less; he had a 3 mph advantage (GPS measured). In principle, yes, there will always be reduced pressure outside the canopy/fuselage compared to inside. If a canopy air leak is present, the leaking "high pressure" air could in theory disrupt the flow in the canopy area causing flow separation and a corresponding drag increase. Glider pilots go to some lengths in sealing their canopies for this reason and also often seal aileron and elevator hinge gaps to avoid lower surface to upper surface (high to low) pressure air leakage. Having said this, an RV-6 canopy will be subjected to a highly turbulent, swirling flow from the propeller and it is hard to imagine a canopy air leak big enough to compete with this sort of flow and cause an unusual flow separation. The question is if there is an area of separated flow around an RV-6 canopy that can be shown to be caused by air leaking out past the edges of the canopy. If yes, then the trade off to consider is if the drag caused by an additional air inlet in the fuselage underside is greater or lesser than the drag resulting from the flow separation caused by the leaking air. That would be the "lunch deal" that is actually on offer. Can anyone else report on the "before vs. after" results of sealing an RV canopy?
