OK,
I've sit on the sidelines watching you guys "wish" that some unit you
"might" buy would have some serial ports or some other way to get data dumps
regarding engine data. SNIP---"AND hopefully soon Grand Rapids Technology
will have their EFIS out which also will have a serial port. Take a look at
what looks fantastic"--SNIP. Geeezzz, we even heard that we could buy some
$2000 box to interface with some units out there.
I've said it before, and I'm saying it again,.... the IK-2000 is the best
bet on engine monitoring that is out there. For the same "couple thousand
dollars," someone could get I-K Technologies' IK2000
(www.i-ktechnologies.com) - which can be used not only for data logging, but
also for permanent monitoring of airspeed, RPM, manifold pressure, altitude,
fuel pressure, oil pressure & temp., all CHTs and EGTs, and more. The IK2000
has two 960-baud serial data ports providing RS232 data, which can be read
into a laptop or Palm top type of device. This data can then be tabulated
and plotted using Excel or a similar program.
So, at the risk of pissing everybody off (which doesn't bother me too much),
don't buy one of those other units until you have looked at the IK-2000.
Some of you will be wasting your money on some of those units that do 1/4 of
the job for the same money. Please wake up you guys! If any of you are at
sun-n-fun, I'll show you this unit in my plane and be glad to discuss it
with you at length. (ps, I don't get paid or any kickbacks, it is simply the
best unit out there BY FAR).

In an different, but equally if not more devastating situation, I became the
target of Nigerian mail back scammers while selling my prop on Barn
Stormers. Fortunately for me, I was a little leery of the deal and the bank
wasn't eager to say the Wells Fargo Cashiers check was as good as cash.
The scam works by relying your honesty to wire back excess funds from a
bogus cashiers check that they FedEx to you. Banks have even been duped by
telling your that the check is as good as cash. You wire back the money,
the bank finds out that the check was a fraud and empties your account for
the amount of the check. In some cases the victims have ended up owing the
bank a considerable amount of money.
I've been in contact with the Secret Service (the lead investigators) and
they are working on the problem. There are those who have lost hundreds of
thousands to these scams! Early scams used people's greed, these will try
to use your honesty. This site has a lot of useful info

thinking about the prefab ones that Van's sells. What experience has people
had with these? The only thing I could find was a pretty good picture of one
on Todd Houg's website.

Hey, as long as we're comparing prices, the EM2 engine monitor with all the
capabilities of the IK-2000 and the serial output port is half the cost of
the IK-2000 and will be available around end of May.

Hi All,
I'd like to back Jim up on the IK-2000. I've seen and flown behind just
about all the engine monitoring systems out there and I own/fly behind and
IK. I originally had selected a VM-1000 but for a variety of reasons went
with the IK.
As Jim stated there are TWO serial ports that can easily be used for data
logging. On top of that these units are FLIGHT TESTED in both builders
aircraft and a Van's Aircraft demonstrator (RV9 TD). The IK may not have
the huge LCD screen layout like the VM, ACS, or new JPI unit, but to me
that's a bonus. No matter how bright the sun is, I can always see my LED
bargraphs and adjust the brightness accordingly.
Once you start flying, you will realize that you don't always want to have
your eyes glued to the engine guages. The IK offers you a system whereas
you can just "glance" at it out of the corner of your eye and know
immediately the status of your system. If all the bars are green, life is
good! If one of the bars is yellow or red, something is up. To top it all
off, it's the ONLY unit which brightly and definitively displays all 4 CHT's
and EGT's simultaneously and also displays the degrees in numbers below the
bargraph. When you have all EGT/CHT readouts, true engine monitoring and
leaning become elementary.
The IK-2000 now has a proven installation record, flying in everything from
RV's, Aerobatic airplanes, certified aircraft, and a Van's demonstrator.
Anyway, like Jim says, you really should take a look at the IK from a
practical useability standpoint. When you do, you'll find it's the best
available, IMHO.

means, than the hinges, to attach the bottom cowl to the fuselage along the
lower edge. Does anybody have pictures of their alternate mounting methods on
their web site? And can you tell me how successful your method has been? How
many hours without failures? Do you like the what you have and why? Thank
you.

In the article I wrote on hinge installation that was published in the third
issue,1999 of the RVator, the paragraph on precautions I had taken to
prevent hinge eyes-breaking was included somewhat edited. In my letter to
Van's I had said about the 1/8" hinges (not MS quality) "--Look at those
hinges! They are a violation of all that's sacred in sheet-metal
practice--No sharp corners, specially NO INSIDE SHARP CORNERS!!---" That is
why I took a 1/8" chain-saw file and relieved those corners on every hinge
eye, including the MS types on the cowling sides. Only have 40 hours on
my -6A but so far no breakages which is more that I can say about
Vetterman's exhaust mtg. brackets!

Fellow Listers:
A couple of our local RV-6A club members don't have anything good to say
about the 4.00x5 import tubes that are used on the nosewheel of the RV-6/7A.
This morning we spent several hours rescuing a stranded RV-6A owners whose
nosewheel went flat just sitting on the ramp while we were having breakfast
(second occurrence in 6 months for him). The tube showed several cracks
which appear like rubber deterioration. We know that there is only one
source for these inferior tubes (maybe that's why Vans includes two of them
in his kits).
Has anyone else had similar experiences??

Hello-
Drawings 31 and 31A show different configurations for
fuel vent lines in the floor - one shows a fitting and
another had a snap bushing.
(1)
The fitting seems to be more elegant - but how do you
get it in there consindering that it goes through the
floor and the sub-floor? (Built myself in to a
corner.)
(2)
I may have to go the snap bushing - Has anyone out
there done the snap bushing instead of fittings?

Geoff,
If you don't want an audio panel you had better check to see if the GX-65 has
any auxiliary inputs on the com. I ordered an SL-40 but had to return it and
get a KX-155 because it didn't have auxiliary inputs for the Marker Beacons
or the Nav Ident. I have limited space in my RV-4 and another $1000.00 for an
audio panel was out of the question. My old VAL 760 had two additional inputs
just for that reason, so does the King Radio's. I called UPS to find out why they
didn't. The man couldn't believe I would fly an airplane without an audio
panel. I already had a GPS so that didn't figure into the equation.

Listers,
I'd like to thank all those that answered my e-mail about the wiring diagrams
for a KX155 and KI209A head. Wes Hays went to a lot of trouble to fax and
mail me the wiring diagrams. The KI209A head is a special unit and King doesn't
include the pinout in any of the KX155 installation manuals I've seen.
Wes also gave me a tip on using the KI209A as a VDI for my UPS 2001NMS. If
this works I'll let you know. I guess you could call it a Precision GPS Approach.
Again, thanks for all the responses. Especially Wes.
If I can help someone the way you guys helped me, just let me know.

Dag,
I did something different. I used 3/8" tubing for the bottom 10" or so
of
the vent line. The 1/4" tubing transitions to the 3/8" tubing via a simple
piece of fuel hose. The 3/8" tubing exits the bottom via a snap bushing,
and extends an inch or so below the bottom of the plan. The tubing in the
air stream has a 30 degree or so bevel cut, facing into the wind. The bevel
cut has a piece of aluminum window screen covering it, using JB weld to hold
it in place. I did not like the idea of having the smaller 1/4" tubing
being vulnerable to a mud dobber clogging it up.

Randall......I tried your link, but it didn't work. I tried retracing the path
and got "not to where I wanted to be." I have found the FAA web pages difficult
to navigate when looking for something specific. Is it just me?
I thought the rule was, for single place, the Experimental placard and the Passenger
Warning were required, but not the ELT. What does it say or how do I get
there?

Thanks for the tip, Mike. Paul already answered me, and sent me the link to his
web site, off list. Weird or not, he had a good looking plane and the information
was appreciated. I'm weird, too.
As for the archives, I thought it may be the start of a useful thread for others,
so I let it go in the archives. It seems more appropriate for the list than
bitching about the French regarding Iraq & WWII. But maybe you have a point......if
it isn't something I would want to look up later, maybe I shouldn't
let it archive.

Jim, I'd love to buy a Michelin tube for it, except for the little fact
that they don't make one the size of Van's nosewheels. No one does,
according to my searches to date, except for the crappy import one. It
has been 6 or 8 months since I searched, so perhaps someone is making
one by now. BTW, I'm the one with the crappy nose wheel tube that Doug
spoke of in the original post. I'll let the list know if I find one.
And no, it was not pinched in the rim halves, and yes it was assembled,
inflated, deflated, reinflated to properly position the tube, etc.., so
please no lectures on that. The rubber simply cracks, generally around
the lateral side of the tube.
Maybe just fill the whole thing with self expanding urethane foam....

My short answer is yes they are very close to garbage, and crappy, or
perhaps junk. Of course short answers are not in my nature. Here is the
long one
Alex, I share your frustration. These nose tires are a pain in the nose.
If it weren't such a far superior configuration I would almost be tempted to
envy those misguided souls with the hard rubber tail wheels. .
If any one finds a Michelin or any other quality sub please let us know!! I
know of no other source. Maybe the fast glass boys know of some. They used
to use the same tire.
Yes, indeed I have seen several failures of these tubes. I have had two
flats on my nose gear. Over the past six years. The first was a total
mystery. It just went flat one day while taxiing out. I was at another
airfield and managed to get towed in and fixed a teeny hole in the side of
it with a bicycle patch. The second flat was when the bicycle patch let go.
These two experiences and others showed me that splitting the wheel and
removing the tire is about 500% tougher than a main tire. Ugh. My best
method is to stick the whole thing in a vise and squeeze until it
surrenders. This in turn means you wouldn't want to reuse the tire. Next
time put some DC-4 on the rim. It helps a little.
During this same six years I have had zero flats on the mains and I am on my
fifth or sixth set of tires. (1130 hours) Can't recall the landings but
around 1900 so far.
So my procedure is to: (1) never again use a patch! and (2) always carry a
spare tube. Needless to say be very careful when reassembling, and use
powder. If you have a spare tube, it is possible to toss a couple sandbags
on the tail and get it off pretty quick, to fix. OH YEH I inflated and leak
checked my "spare" before squishing it flat and putting it in my travel bag
with the chocks and tie down rings. Being from Missouri and a cynic, I
order them at least two at a time from vans.
I have been involved in the post mortem of several nose flats. Half are
pinched and the other half just seem to be manufacturing defects of some
kind.
Both of these failure modes are very sneaky and can come to fruition after a
long time with no problems. To make matters worse, it appears to me that
the rubber in the cheap tubes has a cute characteristic of "ripping" when it
gets a puncture or cut. Apparently the natural rubber in our leaking old
fashioned tubes don't do that.
The good news is that the nose tires last two or three times as long as the
main ones do, so you don't have to go through this torture very often. I
get to do it again soon since my nose tire is getting low on tread. They
seem to be good for about a thousand landings. Your mileage may vary, since
I always gently settle to earth like a butterfly and ease the tender nose
tire to the runway at a slow speed.
I have lots of clever retorts for those who prefer tail wheels, but I am
sparing the list of this treat. I am a tolerant and understanding soul.
Live and let live. There is room on this planet for all persuasions of
pilots.

I have fitted the sliding canopy of my RV-8, and I find it hard to open with
just that dinky locking lever. Has anyone found the need to attach some
sort of a handle at the rear of the canopy to make that first up and back
