I may have to go the snap bushing - Has anyone out

I used the snap bushings and have had no problem so far.

Guys, I am checking my fue flow system because the engine just quit while
test taxing yesterday.
I pulled the fuel bowl off (RV4 mounted bottom center of firewall) and no
fuel flowing. It squirts good with fuel boost pump on from both tanks.
Should it not flow freely with boost pump off? I have Matt's fuel monitor
and Van's fuel hoses which had the AD, but I could only check the right one
which was clear. Suggestions?

My certified Pitts used a rubber grommet... Just shows what you could get

About those Nigerian Bank Check Scammers, The same thing happened to a

via E-mail and sent a Wells Fargo Cashiers Check for over and above the
amount asked and to please remit the difference to Nigeria via Western Union
Money Order. His Banker smelled a rat when he went to deposit it and tipped
him off. They rely on your honesty after you have deposited the bogus check.
This guy E-mailed him ammediatly after he knew he had the check and told him
his wife had died in a car wreck and he needed the funds for Funeral

All should note that this type of scam, those most often from a so-called
Nigerian official "grand puh bah" of sorts, is not limited to Nigeria.
I have received similar email scams from other countries as well. So ... "be
careful out there".

They started off with big ticket items, now they're even going after sales less
than $1000.
My scammer went through the same stuff, his wife was ill then she died, then his
son was in the hospital and dieing. He needed the money right a way to save
his son's life. After this went on for a while I told him that I discovered
a flaw in the prop when I removed it for shipping and that I couldn't sell him
the prop and that I was going to wire back the full $7k the next day.
They thought they had a real sucker now and were getting really excited. They
couldn't wait for the time I was suppose to wire the money to call and check on
the arrangements. They got some bad news, I was in a bad car accident the night
before and it would be a few days before I could talk to anyone. Got a lot
of calls and massages after that, threatening me that he was going to turn
me in to the FBI if I didn't return his money!
After making a miraculous recovery I informed them that I had known about the scam
for some time and the authorities were tracking them as we spoke. I email
them a picture of the check with "counterfeit" stamped across the front. That's
been the end of it so far.

If your fuel selector valve is mounted near the top of the 'tunnel' it
is higher than most (if not all) of the fuel in the tanks. No fuel will
flow up hill without help.

There is only a brief announcement on my website (www.rotaryaviation.com)
right now but as soon as the engraved anodized front panels come in I will
be posting photos & full technical details there. I expect the panels in
around the 26th and should have the website updated within a couple of days
after.
Here are a few details in advance.
The Grand Rapids EIS that I currently use in my RV-4 works great but I have
not been entirely happy with liquid crystal displays. The EM2 display is a
vacuum florescent which is much more readable and professional looking. It
has four lines of data display instead of two so that the upper & lower
lines can display the critical parameters that you always want on hand.
Their functions are engraved in the panel so no memory work is involved in
interpreting the display. The two center lines will have selectable
variable functions.
The EM2 will be made in two different versions, one for Mazda rotary
engines (and water-cooled recips) and another for Lycomings. The Lyc. model
will have up to 6 CHT & 6 EGT inputs with auto peak display plus the usual
tach, manifold pressure, oil, air, (pressure & temperature), 2 fuel level &
pressure, fuel flow (gph) and fuel totalizer (or fuel remaining), volts,
Hobbs, flight timer. It will also have air data (air speed, altitude & V.
speed) but these are mainly for backup purposes because I prefer standard
analog dials for these functions instead of digital. There are also several
auxiliary functions for builders using my EC2 EFI/Ignition controller but
probably not of interest to you. There are adjustable upper & lower limit
alarms on on most functions. The exact price has not been established yet
but will be in the range of $1000 or less.
I will have the prototype at Sun 'n Fun for show & tell at the hands on
rotary engine
forum tent. Width of the EM2 is same as standard radio/avionics stack
(about 6.3").
Height is about 3".

No trap, the fuel well not flow through the electric pump.
that is why we normally have two pumps on a low wing aircraft.

Guys, I am checking my fue flow system because the engine just quit while
test taxing yesterday.
---------------------------
Hi Ron
My opinion only, but --
If you have a carburettor and the temperature & dew point were right it most
likely quit due to carb ice. You did say it started fine later??
I have had my 0-320 quit on the ground with carb ice even though my carb air
temp gauge was showing the carb air temp at 42 deg. F and supposidly above
the carb icing range.
My Electronics Intl carb air temp gauge has a warning light that stays on up
to 39 deg. F, and while that 39 deg F seems fine to prevent icing in flight
it will still ice up on the ground.

Subject: | PLEASE READ - Pending ISP Upgrade For Matronics... |
--> RV-List message posted by: Matt Dralle <dralle@matronics.com>
Dear Matronics Listers,
Sometime during the next 72 hours, the ISP (Internet Service Provider) for
Matronics will be upgrading the level of service to 1.1Mb from the current
768k. When they reprovision the line, there will be an outage requiring
that the local router here be restarted. It is also unclear whether or not
the physical line will support the new rate, so some testing will be
required to verify the new service at the time of installation.
Unfortunately, I don't really have an idea of exactly when they will be
reprovisioning the line, so I wanted to give everyone a heads up on what's
going on. All Matronics List services such as email list redistribution,
subscriptions, and web search and browse will be unavailable during the
upgrade.
In other upgrade news, last Thursday, 3/13/03 I upgraded the firewall
appliance between the Internet and the Matronics systems. This new
firewall represents a substantial increase in performance and hopefully
reliability over the previous system. It will compliment nicely the new
level of ISP connectivity.
Finally, these are just two examples of the upgrades brought to you
compliments of the 2002 List Fund Raiser. A special thanks to all that
made a Contribution in 2002 and so far this year! Everyone that uses these
Lists appreciates your generosity!
I will post a short message again if I manage to get some clear direction
on the time-frame for upgrade, or perhaps when its been completed.
Thanks again!!

I'd buy that, never having checked the passive flow through the Facet,
but I had the lines off all the way to the selector valve before coming
to the conclusion I posted earlier. I probably had less than 1/2
capacity in each tank when I got 'bit'.

Sounds nice. What type of footprint does it have? 3.25" round, square,
etc?

I have a 1994 vintage RV-4 polyester cowling that has a thick white gell
coat applied from the factory. Around the inlet area the gell coat is 1/4
inch thick in places and is cracking really bad. Is there any hope for this
condition or do I have to grind it all down to the fabric and then build it
back up? What do you use to build it up? Will Bondo work or am I asking for
more trouble down the road? Anyone had this problem before. This cowl has
been stored in the attic of my shop for several years and I am now starting
to install. Could all of this be heat related?

I'm going to be moving in mid to late April, but I won't be ready to move
the plane to a hangar yet (bummer, timing would have been perfect!).
The fuselage will be on landing gear (no engine hung yet), and the wings are
on a castering stand. The move distance is about 50 freeway miles.
I figure I'll just rent a big U-haul, somehow wheel the fuselage up into it,
wheel/carry the wings up in there, secure everything, etc. and drive SLOWLY.
Is this how most people do it?
Last time I moved (jeez, seems like just the other day), all I had to move
were the tail surfaces...much easier to deal with! Any advice is much
appreciated.
Thanks,

Well, I guess I either cleared the lines yesterday by running the boost pump
with the gascolator bowl off, or the carb ice melted. I ran it today and it
ran fine from both tanks with fuel boost on and off. I will keep checking, a
while yet to first flight.

Hi Dan,
Some of the car or box trailers that can be borrowed or rented are low slung
and well suited to the job. The four wheeled trailers ride softer than the
big vans. Rent some shipping blankets and use all the pillows in the house
(she won't mind(:-)!
With a friends help I loaded my wing cart and then the wings into the back
of my pickup, loaded the rest of the bits and pieces etc., tied the works
down, hooked up the trailer and drove the works through about 300 miles of
mountain country. all safe and sound.

Jerry:
I think this is just a common characteristic of the polyester cowls with the
gel coat. My flying RV has similar small cracks and my Citabria also showed
these types of cracks. I have heard the only solutions is to grind down
through the gell coat. I would then fill it with Super Fil which is an
epoxy filler. Or spend the big bucks on Van's new style S-glass cowl (which
I did for my "almost" flying RV-4).

Ron, this is probably unrelated to your experience, but your post
inspired me to make this comment:
I believe it is critical to test the boost pump and fuel system for flow
rates prior to first flight. I disconnected the fuel line at the servo
(or carburetor), and put it such that it discharged into a quart jar.
While someone watched the jar, I ran the boost pump and timed how long
it took to get one quart of gas. I did this for both wing tanks. If I
recall correctly, it was well over twice what the engine demands full
power rich (which for a 180 hp engine is about 16 gph), or about 20 to
30 seconds to fill the quart.

I did this in October. The larger trucks with the built in ramps worked
great for me. I used the (I assume standard sized) furniture dollies from
Home Depot, and they fit up the ramp just great when they are turned to run
lengthwise up the ramp. I moved both fuse and wings unassisted this way.
Nervewhacking though - another set of hands in case the wind kicks up at an
inopportune time is a good thought. Amazing how light it all was. Lots of
rope to make SURE nothing can move. I drove 350 miles of Interstate
highway (with some really rough spots) doing 60 all the way, hitting a few
bumps, and everything still looks good.

It's this stupid Microsoft email program that insists on breaking long
lines. If anyone knows how to fix that in Outlook Express let me know. In
the meantime just make sure you enter the whole link in your browser
including the part that's wrapped to the next line in the email. Or just go
to the FAA web site (http://www.faa.gov) and enter "Special Airworthiness
Certification Process Inspect Aircraft" in the search window.
The relevant part is in the document "Aircraft Certification Products and
Services Special Airworthiness Certificate - Experimental Category For the
Purpose of Exhibition Step 6. Inspect Aircraft (FAA) , Aircraft
Certification Products and Services Page", which says (in part):
That the "Passenger Warning" placard is displayed in full view of
all
passengers in the cabin or cockpit (Note: This placard is not
applicable to
single occupant aircraft).

Try http://www.edt.com/homewing/rhproject/fwallfwd.html. There are some
photos that show the .063 flanges/nutplates I used in lieu of the hinge on
the bottom. 460 hrs on my O360/CS and no regrets. I also second Henry Hore's
recommendations. Tedious to smooth those hinge corners but worth it IMHO.

I have been staying warm (single heat muff) as long as the sun is out down
to about 10 deg F or so, but if its cloudy, I need an OAT of 30 or so. I am
still worried about being overly warm in the summer.
I really like the dark canopy otherwise (day VFR airplane). It is about the
same as a pair of sunglasses from the inside, so I don't wear any. My
headset fits better, and the GPS (Skymap) is much easier to read.
Robbie called a few weeks ago asking me to measure my airplane...he was
building a set of one-piece gear legs for the guy who wrecked, and talked
about building more, but didn't indicate when he would do that. My airplane
was the prototype for the legs for the 8s, and he waited until I had tried
them for fit before offering them in general, so I would expect him to do
the same in this case. The guy who wrecked has some rebuilding to do, so it
could be a couple of months, but you could give Robbie a call.

Looks great!
Now that you've been flying it for a while, how is the tinted canopy working
out? Wish it was clear for more warmth in the winter (greenhouse affect)?
Also, do you know when Robbie is coming out with a one piece gear for the 8?
