a Glasair kit, is an IO-360B1E, and was manufactured (he thinks) in 1985.
It is still pickled in original crate. It has been in a dry climate
(Nevada) since it left the factory. I am not sure if this engine would be
subject to the oil pump AD or what other AD's it would be subject to.

injection system it may have. Are there any other concerns I should have
about buying this engine?

You asked for "opinions"--here's mine. While the smoother tube would conduct
slightly more air, it would be so minor among the other variables that it
would not be noticeable; therefore not worth the effort (my opinion) Any
way you could use a bigger scat tube? THAT would help more.

Morning Glenn,
I really enjoyed the responses you got on your post. There is nothing we
can do to an RV kit that hasn't been done before. Sorry you had the problem
but it sounds like a simple fix. Have you done the fix already? Gotta love
the support you get off this group. Any chance you can make the EAA pancake
breakfast at Ryan this Saturday? Are you doing Wright Flight? Got an email
from Hawk Pierce and he is planning on flying up for the breakfast. I
enjoyed the last one although the pancakes were not the best. Hope they
have a better turn out than the last one. Should be at least of couple of
RV's there. Visit from the family is going alright. We went up to Phoenix
last night for dinner with the younger daughter and her boyfriends family.
We had 11 people at the table. Went to the Cheesecake Factory. Not a bad
place at all. Didn't get back until 11:45 so I am beat today here at work.
Only planning on a half day. Need to get talk to my instructor and try and
get something scheduled up for flying. Not sure about the Monday date for
the check ride. Have a good day Glenn and get those nose ribs in today.

Backrivet an AN426-3-3 if you can get in there,
otherwise just use your squeezer. You could fill over
the rivet so that no one will know it is there but I
would recommend leaving it in plain sight and having
fun with the rookie emp. builders the ask the "whats
that hole for" question at the flyins. You could
respond with something like "Didn't you get the
emergency AD from Vans. Do you have the latest plans
and manual. You better re-read carefully and for gods
sake get that rivet in there.

I dimpled a hole in my HS skin. When the EAA tech counselor, who is also an A&P
& teaches classes at an A&P mechanics school, looked at it, he counseled me
to make sure the edges of the hole were smooth & fill it with epoxy before painting
if I didn't like the appearance. Otherwise, no problem. You may wish to
seek a similar opinion as my hole was not positioned where you describe.

I have found and bought a IO-360A1A engine which I am in the process of rebuilding
for my RV7A. I am considering putting the FADEC system on it. Part of my
decision of weather or not to do it will be driven by how much money I can sell
the old fuel system for. Can anyone tell me the approximate value of a Bendix
fuel injection system and two magneto in as removed condition (they look perfect)?

Hi guys,
I was wondering if anyone might know if the narrow deck and wide deck
O-360's (A3A or A1A) would share the same oil sump?
I'm contemplating upgrading my fuel delivery system to front inlet fuel
injection from updraft carburetion. Or maybe a forward facing Ellison
throttle body instead of F.I. Any thoughts?
The goal would be to improve M.P. through better ram air, cleaner cowl inlet
and eliminate engine stoppage during momentary less than positive G flight
(float float).
Thanks,

If you want to spend that kind of money try replacing the sump with one
from Superior Air Parts thats 5 hp right there. I think they were coming
out with a forward facing sump also.

This must be your first BooBoo Glenn, welcome to the real world. The
location you describe sounds like a natural place to simply squeeze in a
rivet and move on if you have a reasonable distance to the "real" hole
location, about 3D minimum ideally. A little filler when you paint and it'll
never show. Wait until you really screw something up before you start buying
extra parts. Just my opinion of course, YMMV.

Dan,
On the contrary, it proves your a natural for building an airplane.
As those of us presently building know, a required skill is to
quickly pound the C-frame rod, or punch the lever on the penumatic
tool while dimpling the skins, before insuring the dimple tool is in
the drilled hole - thereby putting the most important 'extra holes' in
the skins. I'm getting quite good at it, but I'd be even better if I had
practiced before I got the kit as you are doing. Keep up the good
work. <grin>

are too big.
That is just one man=B9s opinion, but I probably value my opinion a lot higher

My first choice is pop rivets, and second choice is #6. Number 4 is last
choice, although I went with them because they seemed to match the 3/32
rivet head size! Little did I know they would be crooked and strip out. No
matter what you use, I would recommend a backing strip to keep the fastener
from pulling out through the fiberglass.

Can somebody with access to their plans or parts tell me the size of the main
wheel bearings (mine's a 6A, but I'm sure they're all the same). I looked at
my old incomplete plans set and cannot find the callout. I have one audibly
going bad and would like to purchase a replacement locally before I tear into
the wheel disassembly project. Thanks in advance :-)

Dab a little anti-seize compound (such as made by Permatex) on your screws
before screwing them in. Nut plates will really do a number on bare screws
otherwise. If you don't have any, you can get it in auto parts stores like
NAPA. Don't worry that this will void the locking feature of the nut plate.
I have removed so-treated screws in inspection covers etc, several times and
they were always tight.

Ditto on the anti-seize. I use it on all my screws, spark plugs, exhaust
studs and slip joints. Haven't stripped any screws yet. I used the #4s in the
wing tip. Also stainless screws last longer and I think look better. Use
structural screws where needed.

Way back in 96 I bought tools etc. from Http://www.Averytools.com While
reading their catalog I came across Beolube dry lubricant, a non toxic
"Beoing developed" stick lubricant. it has lots of uses not the least of
which is lubricating screw treads before screwing them into plate nuts. I
won't part with the life time supply that Avery will send to you for $3.50
USD.
they also have this prod uct in paste and liquid form.

Subject: | Re: Electric Flap Motor |
--> RV-List message posted by: Lenleg@aol.com
Has anyone had trouble with their elec. flap motor?
I have had some problems with flaps sticking up and down. A coulple bangs on
the attachment has freed the motor to run. (no the flaps aren't binding or
hanging up on some part of the air frame).
I called Vans and they said it was probablly the brushes in the motor. (I
only had about 80 hrs on the plane when the problem developed). I have since
taken the motor apart and bleaned the armature and the part where the bruches
ride. (the brushed looked ok but the motor was pretty dirty) This worked for
about 30 hrs and now its beginning to act up again. Any ideas and has anyone
else had this problem?
John:
A friend with an 8A has just recently had the same problem. I also have had
my flap motor not work once. The problem was found with the wires as they
enter the flap motor. One of the wires was broken but you could not see it
and it would sometimes make contact and the flap would work. That area needs
some type of seal and heat shrink to give the wires some support.

Here is a copy of an E-mail just recieved by a friend of mine. He is a
former
C46 pilot and much more, with lots of real experience. The writer of at
least
the first paragraph, the rest may have been done by someone else and pasted
in, is a Vietnam chopper pilot who knows what war is about. The stories I
have
heard from others you would not belive. No boots needed, no bullshit here.
Worth the read. If you require politically correct reading delete now.
Enjoy.

Billy no stall und Nifty nelda,
I apologize for not getting to DHN. I most certainly wanted to but the ice
storm in SAT was worse than we get at 49 degrees. The Texas softies
immediately closed all of the highways from Austin to SAT and SAT to HOU and
west To Del RIO. Then the moisture and low ceilings 5-6 days after the storm
looked like SEAttle in January - march. the radio in the mooney decided to
puke. iwas fortunate to have a t
25 yr old off brand Genave zero with GS set to self destruct at minimums on
glide path but only on course within two miles l-r of the centerline.
Localizer means it was built in a garage by local tinkertoy and former radio
shack sales techies. The inop flag liked to pop up and down like a target in
a shooting gallery; one vacuum system, no deice except for the peter heater;
one alternator complete with at least a ten minute battery reserve
gauranteed to quit after: Center this is... .....; one engine ; one very
tired and rusty pilot with no hood time or soup time in the past three
years. However i did have enough range to kamakazi DHN after a fuel stop in
lake chas, 800 !/2 fct to be 400 & 1/4 and maybe a ILS that would work part
time. I would have gone for it but when Sandy my ex # 2 decided she would be
better of without renewing old pain and opening old wounds, with no
motovation of a proper deicer to motivate a vfr flight on top of an
undercast streching from KY to Orlando and from HOU to Jackson ville FL and
with you at home instead of in Saudi I just couldn't get the motivation to
come see Nelda with you around. Not that your company is so bad I just
didn't want nelda to have to listen to the zillion odd aviation stories and
us bad mouthing in jest mr personality tom murphy. Not to mention me and
thee. And mean greene who had been graciously putting me up and more putting
up with me for way too many wx days. He just about overcame athesim and
began to pray on his knees that if there really was a God get jack the
ripper the hell out of his house. One small miracle would be enough, no
permanent deals you know, but he was getting preety desperate. ( Come to
Jesus Jeffer). After I filched about $300 worth of IFR pubs from a very
loose security flight ops at Kelly AFB, now half civilian, my desparation
was showing too. I think I was shooting for the next Darwin award, I was
actually considering going IFR. Of course Ramon in Puerto Rico with his 700
hrs TT just couldn't understand why i could cut across the Gulf from SAT
Direct Miami. Miami was clear and vis unrstr. Never mind the 1500 miles and
5 hrs of fuel max possible at 10 gph and 5 hrs at 150 kts = 750 miles with
only 750 left to be swam. I suggested about a month layover in Cozemel at
his unlimited expense might make it worth while to glide his new mooney dead
stick from about 12grand for the last 30 miles in hopes of missing the first
beach dune and assuring the tide out was out in event i couldn't quite make
the airport. He said he couldn't afford my tastes in a deluxe mexican resort
with two of his credit cards. Imagine this altitude even after I promised
not to buy any Tequela Cheer ups for a blossoming and interesting deicer.
How do you say deicer in Spanyo? Mooie weanas chee chees??
I have a solution to cutting expenses in the up and coming war. I hate
retarded pay. I hate mandatory retirement while I can still get into the
cockpit. Why have a young 25 yr old risk his life and 3 million dollars in
training in a 50 million dollar F18 with a smart bomb when they could get a
68 yr old aviator for half the pay to fly a Mohawk or an Bronco or even an
old crusty A1E, or my choice of a custom grumman ironworks BEARCAT with a
"dumb bomb" or three and a couple of mini gun fifties and a two, wing
mounted 20 mike mikes to soar in there at tree top level at about 400 kts,
rippin' and tearin' wide open and a "back course" inverted of course, so you
can SEE the devils run from those walkin' talkin' 20's embellished with
some 50 cal "red streak" minis with a repeat over the the same bunkers.aHH!
THAT'S THE DAY RUNS. AT NIGHT JUST NAPALM FOR A LITTLE COOK OUT OVER THE
RADAR ROCKET AND MISSILE IMPLACEMENTS. They can shoot all the HEAT SEEKERS
they want at my round engine thumper slinging a 14ft diameter four blade.
The BEARCATS are still waiting for us at Davis Monthan. Pay me a little
extra and a few days R&R up at the adult flyin ranches in Nevada just to
get my former OUTLAW altitude back up to parr. AND i'LL GO WRENCH ON THEM
AND SHED SOME MOTHBALLS. NEVER MIND NEW OR CAMOFLAGE OR STEALTH. JUST A GOOD
SUPERCHARGER AND FEW THOUSAND GALLONS OF 115-145 AND A FEW MODERN LOW COST
LUXURIES LIKE A PANEL MOUNT GPS.
Anything is better than sitting on the ground drawing a retardment check
"backing up" for the last 20 years. I am expendable and get to go to a
better place if the farm should be bought. So get those youngsters out of
the cockpit, refine quickly some 115-145 fuel and let a contract or two for
some big mother pistons and some JUdds er, Juggs. mama come and get your
baby boy! Me and Herc Fowler and a few other old round engine boys can still
keep up with the JET SET. JUST GIVE US A MACHINE WITH A LONG RUNWAY AND A
LOAD ABOUT TWICE WHAT A JET CAN CARRY AND A MODERN MOVING MAP GPS AND A
STICK WITH A FEW BUTTONS AND A CHINESE HAT AND HAVE A FORMATION OF APACHES
(ABOUT SIX) TO FOLLOW ALONG JUST TO CLEAN THE REMAINING "CRUMBS" FROM THE
TABLE. NIGHT VISION GOGGLES COULD BE PRETTY EFFECTIVE SPREADING GOOD CHEER
AND WARMTH WITH SOME SPECIAL CONVERTED HOPPERS IN A TBM OR A TBF AT ABOUT
330 KTS WITH NAPALM OOZZING OUT THE BELLY TANKS. AND LIKE A GOOD CROP DUSTER
WE WON'T BE BREAKING ANY ALTITUDE RECORDS. BUT AFTER A FEW NIGHT OF
"COOKOUTS" THERE WON'T BE TOO MANY IRAQIES WANTING TO MAN THEIR MISSILE
SIGHTS IN FIRESUITS AND OXYGEN MASKS SO THEY CAN STILL BREATH AS THEY SIZZLE
INSIDE THEIR "FULL BURN" SUITS.
SOME TIME OLDER IS SIMPLER AND BETTER THAN NEW. I SAY PUT OUT THE WORD AND
GET READY FOR THE OLDIE BRIGADE , THE CAN'T LOSE BOYS, WITH MANY HAVING AN
APPROACHING "DEATH WISH" COMING ON, CALLED CANCER OR HEART DISEASE OR
BEDRIDDEN HOOKED UP TO LIFE SUPPORT MACHINES; I'D DRATHER TAKE IT OUT AND
HANG IT OUT WITH A FEARSOMENESS AND CONFIDENCE THAT WOULD PALE A KAMAKAZI.
AND SPEND MY LAST OLD FOOL DAYS CHASING DO NUT DOLLIES AND R ME NURZZES.
THAT'S A SHOOT OUT TOO THANX TO MODERN VIAGRA!!
LET US MAKE THIS A QUICK AND CHEAP WAR AND CONSERVE OUR YOUNG MEN FOR WHEN
WE MIGHT REALLY NEED THEM. THIS IS JUST A SHOOTING GALLERY AND I DON'T NEED
A G SUIT OR AN OXYGEN MASK. I could also carry more ordnance and have more
fuel range if you remove the Martin Breakers, I am not interested in
punching out from 100 agl at 350 or 400 kts if it's hit and on fire with
some control left I can put what's left on the target. it will save funeral
expense; I'll spread my own ashes; it won't cost any new production or short
those current schedules for new aircraft in the inventory, and better to
leave a good round engine close support fighter in a combat zone than in the
Arizona Desert as a home for the scorpions. Isaih 6:8 Send me!
Just for ha ha's , let's see how many confederate air farce folks down in
