Jon (and all),
Reading your message got me curious so while I was talking with WW this morning
about my 200C I asked about the 150 issue with electronic ignition. Indeed there
were two cases where the spinner bulkhead attach bolts (not to be confused
with the prop attach bolts) elongated, presumabely due to vibration, so they
decided to post this warning. What WW failed to tell you is that they already
have a fix for it. Anyone interested should give them a call... 619-562-3725.
One thing I have learned in working with them on all this prop testing, they are
VERY conservative and will always act on the side of caution and safety. Heck,
their beta period for the 150 was two years. In fact there are several 150s
out there flying with electronic ignition with over 100 hours on them that have
experienced no issues with the spinner bulkhead bolts. I put 10 hours on mine
with LASAR ignition and never saw any problem. Nevertheless, due to the two
problem cases they are redesigning the spinner bulkhead and modifying the attach
bolt system to eliminate any possibility of this problem.
To those who might be curious about how my test is going, the non-counterweighted
200C has been installed and two initial flights made, one after resetting the
fine pitch stop a bit finer. The weather is awful up here in the "Northwet"
so no data has been collected other than weight (12 lbs lighter than the Hartzell).
The forecast is for continued wet so it may be several weeks before the
weather and my work schedule allow a test window.

Subject: [rv8list] Whirlwind Prop & Electronic Ignition
All-
I am strongly considering using a whirlwind 150 (three blade
composite, c/s) on my RV-8, in conjunction with a IO-360 (180hp) and
dual electronic ignition (Lightspeeds). Up until recently, I was
pleased by the fact that whirlwind supported the use of the propellor
with electronic ignition, unlike Hartzell. Recently, however, they
posted a notice on their website which indicates that they do NOT
recommend such use. A call to the company revealed that this change
was due to "two bolts which backed out of the prop bulkhead and both
were in planes equipped with elect. ignition." Their recommendation
was to go with their 200 series, which are aerobatic two blade
propellors, but which carry an additional 20 lbs and which cost ~$1200
more.
I think I understand the issue here - that the timing advance of e/i
makes for more stress on the blades with each cycle by the more
'violent' lurching (for lack of a better word). Is this correct? Is
there anyone out there who has this combination and can offer advice?
I have seen Randy Lervold's wonderful summary, but I dont think this
particular issue was addressed. Does anyone have any strong 'gut'
feelings on this?

This is Charlie's wife, Tupper, and I wanted you all to know how very
HAPPY I am that Charlie has decided (finally!) to build an RV7. I KNOW
that he has written to the list and asked for advice on kits, projects
and planes. So, I bet some of you are also glad that he has made a
decision! It has been a year since we sold the BD4 and I have begged him
to order something--anything--that would someday fly. I am EXTREMELY
excited and yesterday when the pieces-parts (and there are A LOT of
them) arrived , I immediately pulled out the camcorder and the camera to
record the moment. This afternoon Charlie will start inventorying the
pieces and I might start working on a paint scheme.........do you think
I'm rushing things ;-)

I'm going to be flying my -8 from MA to OR in late April to bring it to
the paint shop.
I've been playing around with my flight planning software (FliteStar)
and trying to come up with an acceptable route. I'm having difficulty
finding a way through MT & WY and that doesn't force me up to oxygen
altitudes. I don't own an O2 system and I don't want to purchase one at
this point, as it'll be very rarely used.
So, can anyone who's made this trip recommend a route over the high
country in the northwest that won't take me above 10,500 westbound and
11,500 eastbound? I'd like to remain at least 2,000 AGL over the mountains.
Thanks!!

since we started (over 2 years ago) and we still haven't figured it out yet

Tell Charlie "congratulations" and we'll be looking forward to more
questions as you progress through the kit. It will help a lot that he has
support from his spouse. Welcome to the insanity.

Ken,
Crossing Montana in the middle of the state with a stop for cheap fuel in
Helena a Mustang Mickey's is the way to go, but you can also cross Wyoming
although the tallest part of the Rockies are in Northern Wyoming, so go
toward the south if you choose WY. Neither route is as bad as it looks on a
map. Essentially just pick one of the major east/west freeways (Montana use
I-90, Wyoming use I-80) and sort of follow it. These freeways are
deliberately cut through the low sections and also tend to have airports
along them. We flew back from OSH last year via this route and had no
problem and did not take O2.
From Helena just nav GPS direct to Aurora (KUAO). If the weather's bad then
aim for Pasco and fly down the Columbia River gorge.
Have a good flight!

My wife and I have made several runs to the NW in our -6. The route we used
was through Missoula MT then NW towards Spokane along the freeway. It's
fairly level after Spokane until you get to the Sierras and even there
you'll see passes through the hills. Do watch for anything that looks like
'significant' weather. Winds in the mountains can really build up the bumps
in a hurry. If possible early morning legs worked out best; evenings were
second choice if it wasn't too windy during the day. In all cases we found
that altitude helped avoid the rough stuff.

I concur with Cammie. Specifically, by VOR waypoint, you aim for Cheyenne
CYS then Rock Springs OCS then Malad City then Burley BYI then Boise BOI
then it's fairly low altitude to Oregon. If your destination is west of the
Cascades, you can either go over them at 10,500 or fly the Columbia River at
2,000 or above.
VFR or IFR this is the lowest routing. However, at 10,500 you will be lower
than 2,000 AGL for a total of about 20 minutes west of Cheyenne.

Does anybody know anything about Hartzell's 7692 blades? From the TCDS they
look identical to the 7666 blades except the 7692 is 5 pounds lighter.
I don't really want to stray from the recommended HC-C2YK / 7666A-4Q

the deal with the 7692 series blade is all about.

Subject: | Looking for a Tech Counselor |
--> RV-List message posted by: "Karie Daniel" <karie4@attbi.com>
I live in Sammamish, WA. and I haven't been able to make it the Seattle EAA meeting
yet. I am getting to a point that I would really like to have a Tech Counselor
come and take a look at the quality (or lack of) of the work I have in progress.
I looked on EAA's web site but the first two guys I called on the list were either
not in EAA any longer or had moved and the number was incorrect. I know of
a great club up at Crest but with two counselors but I don't want to make someone
drive a half hour to my house. I would also like to find someone that's seen
and counseled a few RV's.
Anyone lurking on this list that can help or have a number of someone you are using?
Thanks,
Karie Daniel

I just reviewed an article put out sometime ago (last couple of years) in
the rvator written by a guy who flew in the mountains for a living. He
kinda slanted it towards the midwest guys trying to fly over something
taller than a viaduct I think. I didnt like that too much but his article
had some decent suggestions on crossing the little hills up there in the nw.

Oops -- you're right, but only in that I cited the wrong part. The one I
meant to cite (and posted the URL for) is in fact for AMATEUR BUILT
category. Try that "short link" I posted
(http://makeashorterlink.com/?S5B816AE3) and correct me if I'm still
wrong....
