Tom Martin used to have a black -4, I believe, before he got into
Rockets. You can probably find his e-mail address in the archives
and ask him if he has a photo he can send you.

Thanks for all the replies, I have been sent 5 pictures of this black 4
along with a shot of a black rocket.
BTW, the boat sold as of this Thursday. I can now take those boat pictures
off the website, now I just need to find someone who wants a good Bonanza.

I have an 8a (not flown yet) and when I installed the landing gear
weldments I noticed that the bolts will not pull down the weldment to the
aluminium. So, I thought lets simulate a hard landing, got a rubber mallot
and wacked the landing gear weldments about 4 times each. Everytime I did
this I was able to tighten the bolts about 1/4 turn more. So I dont how
your landing gear is attached but check the bolts and see what you find. FWIW

Subject: | horizontal stabilizer riveting |

Need some advice on riveting a nose rib in a 9A horizontal stabilizer. I put in
the end ribs first to give the stabilizer some form, but now that I'm trying
to rivet in the middle rib, I get a depression deformation in the skin right
at the rib. How do I avoid this? Should I drill out the end ribs and do the
middle one first? Would clecoing in the forward spar help? Thanks.

I have a couple of years old with 260hrs, UMA manifold pressure gage that's
reading a little over an inch off. I'm tired of always compensating for it.
I'm planning on up grading to engine monitoring system so I don't want spend
the money for a overhaul. Has anyone pulled one of these apart and adjusted
it themselves?
Thanks,
Dave

Subject: | Tail is ordered! Band saw deal. |
--> RV-List message posted by: Bill Dube <bdube@boulder.nist.gov>
Well, the tail for my RV-7A is on its way. I ordered it last Friday.
Exciting stuff.
Got a super deal on a Band Saw from Harbor Freight. They have a 14 inch,
1
HP, four-speed band saw on sale for $219 (regularly $319.) Such a deal!
Bought a drill press on sale at the same time for $179 (regularly $279.) I
have no idea how they make these tools (and ship them to the USA) for so
little money.
My garage is all ready structurally. I put in a new overhead door and
replaced the sagging 90 year-old header. Just in time, a might add. We got
almost three feet of wet snow three days after I finished putting in the
last support. I'm certain my flat-roof garage would have collapsed, like
100's of others in Denver, if I hadn't rebuilt the support structure.
Now all I have to do is get all the junk out of the garage that has
accumulated over the years. :
)
Can't wait to start squeezing rivets!

Just released from Jeppesen:
AVIATION DICTIONARY
This is the newest and most complete aviation dictionary with over 10,000
definitions of aviation related terms for pilots and technicians including
acronyms and abbreviations. All the "V" speeds, 4 definitions of "flare",
pilot-controller terms, etc. See more at:
http://buildersbooks.com/aviation_dictionary.htm
2003 FLIGHT LIBRARY - CD
The 2003 updates of these CDs are finally available. 2 versions - Standard
and Pro. The standard contains about 450 FAA books and advisory circulars
including AC-43.13, A&P Handbooks AC-65 series, All the FARs, AIM, test
standards, aviation weather, instrument and CFI handbooks, etc. The pro
version adds every AD and STC ever written, NTSB and EPA regs, aviation law,
and more. It's absolutely amazing how much data fits on 4" of plastic. See
more at:
http://buildersbooks.com/flight_library_cds.htm
Thanks,
Andy
..... thought the Colorado snow was finally starting to melt and the airport
re-open and we can fly again. But no! 4-5 more inches today and then
another foot by the weekend. Well, at least the skiing is good, and
Denver-ites will be able to water their lawns this summer. ;-)

At least I think it is. I've noticed that after I shut down, I get a pool
of gas in my FAB. I have a drain point in the lowest point of the FAB and
the gas drips out of that, onto my cowling and out. This can't be normal
can it? Anything I can or should check?

I know this is REALLY early to be talking about OSH but I'm really excited
because this is my first year going there. We have a flight of 3 RVs that
will be traveling from Oakdale, Ca (O27). Anyone interested in forming a
squadron? Any we might be able to join? Bad Cat Rob is wanting to make the
entire trip in one day. That's a bit much for this fat old pilot. Any good
camping places about halfway there (from California)? Good routes? Any
trip reports online for OSH?

I don't know much about airplane carbs but a friend in my EAA chapter had a
similar problem in his RV-6 and it turned out to be the float valve.

Glad you asked. Yes I did. Really buggered it up. This was about four
years ago. I wound up breaking the glass and having a real sorry instrument
on my hands. It seems the case itself is one of the vacuum chambers.
The story has a happy ending however. I got the UMA phone number from an
instrument shop and called them. They had a very reasonable, set price to
overhaul it. When I got it back it was better than new, and in a short
time. Highly recommend you give them a call. Sorry I no longer have the
number.

I would suggest the three of you arrive at OSH via Kittyhawk and participate
in the Airventure Cup. I did it last year and it was a hoot. Guaranteed
parking at show center and a free week pass for the big show. The beni's are
greater than the cost of the entry fee. It's one of the most fun things I
have done in aviation. The non-turbo guys were skimming the tree-tops in a
"low-level waiver" and calling out radio towers on our discrete race
frequency. My father intends to enter this year with his nearly flying RV-3.

I am interested in any experiences with reliability and usability.

It could also be normal! In carburetor systems, raw fuel can condense on
the walls of the induction system when the engine is running. The amount
depends on environmental temperatures, etc. The induction system walls can
get very cold due to venturi effects and fuel vapourization. This condensed
fuel is kept on the walls by the air/gas mixture roaring by when the engine
is operating, but when it shuts down, the fuel simply runs out the bottom.
This characteristic can be dangerous if an intake valve is so bad that this
intake manifold gas and its associated vapour is ignited during restart.
The FAB drain hole is a good idea because it lets this fuel run out of the
intake assembly reasonably quickly after shutdown.
Fuel injection systems don't have this problem :-)

good the radio sounds. I have no experiance with the equipment you are

Subject: | Vans full caster tailwheel |
--> RV-List message posted by: RVer273sb@aol.com
Had an interesting thing happen yesterday
I had no tailwheel steering for a landing roll out in my
RV4. Got it in the hangar and dissasembled the rotating part.
What I found was that the bronze bushing that fits into the steel
weldment had rotated.. There is a hole drilled into the bushing
that lines up with the grease zirk and the zirk is supposed to protrude
into the bushing far enough to keep it from rotating. Rotation of the bushing
would be no big deal except that it has a relief milled into the top of it
that
matches the milled portion in the steel which allows the spring to push the
pawl
into the steering arm locking it. There was enough of the bushing protruding
above the milled part of the weldment that it kept the pawl from extending.
There was evidence that the bushing had been working on the grease zerk for
awhile.
I rotated the bushing 180 degrees and drilled a new hole for the grease zerk
to
engage the bushing. I filed the relief into the bushing to give the pawl
clearance
and installed a new zerk.
I have 789 hrs on this tailwheel assbly and who knows how many landings.
I had greased it regularly/ I am now trying 30 weight oil instead of grease
since
it appears to be a phosphor bronze bushing. It was always difficult to get
grease
into it thru the zerk.

Hi Scott,
Might it be wise to put fitting on the hole in the FAB that will accept a
flexible line? Then run the line out into the open air. I would do this so
as to avoid fuel laying and evaporating inside the cowling.
If the idea is worth the effort, the fitting could be custom made using a
small diameter piece of tubing brazed or silver soldered to a thin piece of
chrome molly sheet metal.

Actually, two holes are needed on the bottom of the FAB. One hole is
"inside" the filter, to drain excess prime out and one is "outside" the
filter, towards the very back, to let injested rainwater out. One must
use caution putting any sort of fitting on the drain which is "inside"
the filter - no bulkhead fittings which could shed a nut and toast an
engine (plus the drain cannot stick up any from the bottom inside of the
FAB, or it won't act as a drain). Find a fitting which can be prosealed
to the outside (bottom) of the FAB, with no parts inside the filter
which can come loose.

> Need some advice on riveting a nose rib in a 9A horizontal stabilizer. I
put in the end ribs first to give the stabilizer some form, but now that I'm
trying to rivet in the middle rib, I get a depression deformation in the
skin right at the rib. How do I avoid this? Should I drill out the end
ribs and do the middle one first? Would clecoing in the forward spar help?
Thanks.

To you guys that are so anxious to replace vacuum systems,
I would like to buy (cheap of course):
Vacuum regulator
Vacuum filter
Attitude indicator
DG (with autopilot output).
How about an offer.

Fortunately, you don't need to keep track of these contact numbers, because
dang near all of the best a/c parts sources (including UMA) are listed in the
RV Builders' Yeller Pages, hosted by Matronics.com.

Hi Jim,
In a word, no.
I have no plans at present to attempt any thing but VFR until after
achieving 200 hr. of licensed piloting. I seriously doubt that I would go
further than training for night flight training.
However I will have roomor can rearrange my removable instrument panel to
add instruments to fulfill official requirements as needed.
