So, I thought lets simulate a hard landing, got a rubber mallot and wacked the landing gear weldments about 4 times each. Everytime I did this I was able to tighten the bolts about 1/4 turn more. Band saw deal. --> RV-List message posted by: Bill Dube Well, the tail for my RV-7A is on its way. I ordered it last Friday. Exciting stuff. Got a super deal on a Band Saw from Harbor Freight. They have a 14 inch, 1 HP, four-speed band saw on sale for $219 (regularly $319.) Such a deal! Bought a drill press on sale at the same time for $179 (regularly $279.) I have no idea how they make these tools (and ship them to the USA) for so little money. My garage is all ready structurally. I put in a new overhead door and replaced the sagging 90 year-old header. Just in time, a might add. We got almost three feet of wet snow three days after I finished putting in the last support. I'm certain my flat-roof garage would have collapsed, like 100's of others in Denver, if I hadn't rebuilt the support structure. Now all I have to do is get all the junk out of the garage that has accumulated over the years. : ) Can't wait to start squeezing rivets! In carburetor systems, raw fuel can condense on the walls of the induction system when the engine is running. The amount depends on environmental temperatures, etc. The induction system walls can get very cold due to venturi effects and fuel vapourization. This condensed fuel is kept on the walls by the air/gas mixture roaring by when the engine is operating, but when it shuts down, the fuel simply runs out the bottom. This characteristic can be dangerous if an intake valve is so bad that this intake manifold gas and its associated vapour is ignited during restart. The FAB drain hole is a good idea because it lets this fuel run out of the intake assembly reasonably quickly after shutdown. Fuel injection systems don't have this problem :-) Garth Shearing VariEze and 80% RV6A Victoria BC Canada ----- Original Message ----- From: Craig Warner > > Check that the primer is in and locked. Got it in the hangar and dissasembled the rotating part. What I found was that the bronze bushing that fits into the steel weldment had rotated.. There is a hole drilled into the bushing that lines up with the grease zirk and the zirk is supposed to protrude into the bushing far enough to keep it from rotating. Rotation of the bushing would be no big deal except that it has a relief milled into the top of it that matches the milled portion in the steel which allows the spring to push the pawl into the steering arm locking it. There was enough of the bushing protruding above the milled part of the weldment that it kept the pawl from extending. There was evidence that the bushing had been working on the grease zerk for awhile. I rotated the bushing 180 degrees and drilled a new hole for the grease zerk to engage the bushing. I filed the relief into the bushing to give the pawl clearance and installed a new zerk. I have 789 hrs on this tailwheel assbly and who knows how many landings. I had greased it regularly/ I am now trying 30 weight oil instead of grease since it appears to be a phosphor bronze bushing. It was always difficult to get grease into it thru the zerk. One hole is "inside" the filter, to drain excess prime out and one is "outside" the filter, towards the very back, to let injested rainwater out. One must use caution putting any sort of fitting on the drain which is "inside" the filter - no bulkhead fittings which could shed a nut and toast an engine (plus the drain cannot stick up any from the bottom inside of the FAB, or it won't act as a drain). Find a fitting which can be prosealed to the outside (bottom) of the FAB, with no parts inside the filter which can come loose. I have no plans at present to attempt any thing but VFR until after achieving 200 hr. of licensed piloting. I seriously doubt that I would go further than training for night flight training. However I will have roomor can rearrange my removable instrument panel to add instruments to fulfill official requirements as needed.
