I've done it in the Cherokee, and it's really not that bad. FWIW, Cheyenne is a great FBO but gas is expensive. Still not a bad place to stop as they have a full computer setup to get a final brief before crossing the mountains. If you decide to stop in the Boise area, I would recommend Nampa (S67). The Self Serve gas located on the west end of the runway is cheap, quick, and easy. Its right next to the "FlightQuest" building, if George isn't around to let you in, the door has a keypad. Code is "Guard" frequency. If pumping your own isn't your deal, the main FBO is also very friendly (now that it's under new management) and should be able to care of you. Also on the field is the Warhawks Museum. Neat place! Rumor has it that John Paul's (Warhawk owner) P-40's are the two in "Pearl Harbor", but I don't know for sure. Specifically, by VOR waypoint, you aim for Cheyenne CYS then Rock Springs OCS then Malad City then Burley BYI then Boise BOI then it's fairly low altitude to Oregon. If your destination is west of the Cascades, you can either go over them at 10,500 or fly the Columbia River at 2,000 or above. VFR or IFR this is the lowest routing. However, at 10,500 you will be lower than 2,000 AGL for a total of about 20 minutes west of Cheyenne. While these units cannot be used as primary required instruments in shooting an approach, they certainly may qualify as required equipment on board. Look at required list and the Dynon appears to satisfy a couple of instruments. The list say, for example, vac. gyro attitude indicator. There are electric AHs, thus vac. has got to get thrown out of the equation. I'm still thinking a panel mounted approach certified GPS/COM along with the glass instruments makes you legal for required equipment and required instruments for ground facilities to be used. I'm leaving out comments on a VOR head and a vac. AH as a backup reference. Quit hoping for the best and do the following it will only take a day or two, at most. About 6 hours effort. . 1.Order from Vans a fresh can of pro seal, a sheet of al ..040, and a bunch of those pop rivets which seal. 2. Cut out circular plates from the .040, as big as can still fit on the back baffle. 3. Draw an outline of the plates on the back baffle in each bay excetp the inboard one 4. Get access to a big old floor mounted drill press and fly cut large holes in back baffle in each bay except the inboard , .5 inch smaller than the outline. 5. Get in there and scuff up the seam area all around the baffle, clean and then put a good fillet of pro seal all around. While it is open seal off any other rivets, or ribs which look dry. 6. Drill, debur, pro seal and pop rivet the plates on. You want them to face forward so you get a little ram air pressure in the tank to help get the suction pressure up on the fuel pump. They look to be just a small piece of 1/4" stainless tubing. I would think they would work great. Van's method is a little lower profile and only take about 1/2 hour to make. My experience with an RV-6A slider last summer was that the final insert of the plexi in the frame had a subtle but significant effect on the shape of the canopy frame. Thus doing the final fit of the slider blocks now might cause difficulties later on. My suggestion would be to make up some temporary blocks out of wood to help hold the canopy in alignment during final fitting stages and use then these as patterns to drill the plastic blocks later on. There is a lot of software, custom electronics and custom interfaces that Dynon has developed. If (god forbid) Dynon were to cease existance tomorrow, how would I repair the software, hardware or custom integration of all this that makes the D-10 work ? You can't. Oxymoron alert! ;) I have the standard sucky, whiny vacuum gyros and can't wait to offload them on Ebay. I'm going to check out the Dynon EFIS at SNF. I plan to install one as soon as I can afford to lay down the cash. The reliability of electronics these days is simply outstanding. When I was installing my vacuum system and gyros, I just could not believe the amount of junk required to make it work. Vac pump (which requires some small amount of engine power to operate), filter, regulator, hoses, vac guage, big a$$ heavy gyros, fittings, etc. If I can get rid of all this crap, and shed a few pounds off the airframe in the process, it's worth the $2k for the Dynon. I'll recover some of the cost from selling off the vacuum junk. I used to consider myself a very old fashioned, conservative type of airplane builder/flyer. However, the advances in modern aviation electronics is really starting to appeal to me. How could I resist? When you work for Intel, you can't help but want to be state-of-the-art. I've had good results with my COM 760 radio. It is always loud and clear on transmit as well as receive. The only issue has been with the LED display modules. They were burning out due to too much drive current. Their tech guy sent me the info to fix it myself (with parts supplied by them if I wanted), or to send it to them for the repair and a retune....for a fee. I rather balked at this as the display issue is a design flaw. So, I chose to fix it myself. I found the manufacturer of the LED displays (NOT your average Rad Shack component!), and replaced a current limiting resistor. Problem fixed for just a few bucks. A friend of mine had an early VAL VOR/ILS unit and used it many times for approaches in IMC. He really liked it. Yeah, a straight line! But seriously folks, with a flight of this length, I would be very flexible and try to get clear of the big rocks as a first priority. From there, it's all a matter of dodging the nuke plants, stadiums, TFRs and God knows what else we can't fly over cuz the Fed sez we be dangerous 'n chit. But, I digress. Rant mode off. I'm planning GPS direct from Albuquerque (home base for me) to the Pensacola area, departing 4/2. From there, I'll curve southerly along the coast to Tampa where I'm staying. SNF will be a short hop from there. This is my first time flying this far east, and I'm most concerned with coastal weather patterns. Being that I live in the arid southwest, I'll take a wide berth around the coast as necessary to stay VFR. I'm planning a two day trip both ways. Might overnight in the Vicksburg area. So is pilot oxygen and an official mountain check out. Communications and VOR are spotty, at best. Several Texas vacationers crash each year here in Colorado because of lack of mountain flying training/experience. It is the difference between canoeing on a lake and canoeing on white-water rapids. A few tips: 1) Make arrangements with a foothills FBO to get a mountain check out as part of your trip. Time and money well-spent. 2) Use oxygen even though it is not mandated. 3) Fly on the down-wind side of a valley. The up-drafts tend to be there and you can turn tighter into the wind if you come to the end of the canyon. 4) Fly in the early morning to avoid head-bashing turbulence. Never fly in the late afternoon, or early evening. 5) Cross a pass at 45 degrees, never perpendicular. This makes it quicker to turn and abort if you hit a down-draft. 6) Always follow roads. It gives you a place to land. Folks will see you when you ditch. You can walk out. Remember, your radio probably won't be heard by anyone. 7) Carry full winter clothing, matches, food, and water, even in summer. 8) Don't attempt to "out climb" a down-draft. Either "punch though" if you have the margin AGL, or turn around to the "good air" you just left and then climb a bit more. 9) Give a wide berth to little twisty "rotor" clouds. 10) Density altitude....... 3,000 ft roll for a 172 with two passengers and half fuel at Leadville Airport. A "war story": I was flying a 172 down the I-70 corridor towards Denver, just having crested Loveland Pass. I had the engine at idle, the airspeed at nearly 100 knots, and I had the controls crossed to put the plane in a major side-slip, right wing pointing at the ground. With alI this, I was still climbing at 500 FPM. Down-drafts can be just as severe. ________________________________ Message 36 ____________________________________ Time: 04:28:43 PM PST US From: "Bob Hassel" Subject: RE: RV-List: fiberglassing --> RV-List message posted by: "Bob Hassel" In general most of the plastic folks use that well known expensive release agent commonly referred to as 'duck tape' - I mean special FAA approved release agent that I can sell you for hundreds of dollars a foot.... -----Original Message----- From: owner-rv-list-server@matronics.com [mailto:owner-rv-list-server@matronics.com]On Behalf Of Bob Hartley Subject: RV-List: fiberglassing --> RV-List message posted by: "Bob Hartley" When fiberglassing around the plexi canopy some have mentionned using electricians tape to prevent the fiberglass from sticking in certain areas. Enough negative 'slosh' comments on list/archives to suggest you not use it. If you won't move on until you fix it, suggest you check archive for technique wherein a slight vacuum is created in the tank and a syringe of diluted(with MEK I believe) Proseal is injected along the edge/rivet/whatever. Or you could grit your teeth and take the baffle off as the pop rivets are just as easy (or hard) to remove as the rivets. And if you have just done the tanks, the proseal should be soft enough that clean up after disassembly shouldn't be too much a hassle.
