All,
the weather will be great this week in the central Florida area. No rain in
the forcast, highs between 75 to 80, lows in the 50's, and 60's.
Also, avoid Vandenberg Airport... Highest gas prices and NOT experimental
friendly.... pass the word.

Just a little FYI about mounting your fuel tanks and the Proseal, make sure
it is 100% cured. I tried to remove my tanks one was easy the other very
difficult. There were several areas where Proseal had bonded the tank to
the spar. This was not fun!

Jim,
Thanks for the update! I plan to arrive at Tampa (TPA) Thursday. Expensive
gas too, but better FBO service from all accounts I've read. Gotta pick up a
car and the wife/kid there later in the day.
I'll make sure to thumb my nose and fart in Vandenberg's general direction.
It's the least I can do for the cause. ;)

Go for Hayward. Hayward is right next door to Fremont. About 10 min drive
vs 30 - 45 min from Reid-Hillview depending on traffic. If you file IFR you
wont have any trouble getting through Bay Area airspace. I'm VFR only and
I've never had much trouble getting through Bay Area airspace even in my old
Aeronca Champ.

To those of you in the bay area, I'm planning on visiting a friend in
Fremont and it looks like San Jose Muni is the closest airport. Is it
friendly to us little guys? Last time I flew out of SJC was in 1969. I
know things have changed a lot. I have the option of filing IFR if
necessary. I'm planning on arriving next Saturday or Sunday.

Subject: | Rudder tip strobe? |
--> RV-List message posted by: Bill Dube <bdube@boulder.nist.gov>
I have yet to see an example of an anti-collision strobe mounted on the
horizontal stabilizer tip on an RV. Why is this?
It would be lighter weight than the two strobe wing tip solution.
It would be less drag than two wing-tip strobe / position light units.
(You could go with the clear wing tip cut-outs for position lights.)
It would have less tendency to interfere with radios, because it is
farther away.
It is standard mounting spot for OEM aircraft.
If you mounted it about midway on the rudder tip, (instead of on the
actual stab tip,) the stab tip would shade the pilot from the flash.
It would draw 1/2 the power of the two wing tip units.
What am I missing? Why don't folks do this?

--> RV-List message posted by: "Brian Denk" <akroguy@hotmail.com>
Listers,
With the recent thread on oil quick drain valve alternatives to the
(slightly more) expensive Aeroquip device, I have ordered a Fumoto drain
valve. Part number is T202N which will work for 1/2NPT Lycoming engines.
The "N" suffix indicates it has a nipple for hose attachment. Price
including shipping is $31.95. Web address is http://www.fumotovalve.com
These valves are brass bodied with stainless ball. They should not leak.
They do not have a safetying tab that I can see, but they could be easily
saftied with a wrap of wire around the valve handle boss.

Tom,
I would begin by checking out the amp gauge all by itself. Battery, amp
gauge, light bulb, ground. I would continue by testing one item at a
time. Pull all fuses, off all breakers, switch off all you can, disconnect
everything else etc.

Bill,
For one thing your proffered strob location will be effectively blocked
downward and forward by the fuselage and wings. Two strobes in the
preferred "squared up" wing-tip locations guarantees sight of at least one
strobe from any place out there in the sphere. (See Van's catalog for Nav
Light Extensions.)

I didn't like the idea of using multiple clothes-peg- like sticks to squeeze
the tank skin to the rear baffle to hold it there while curing, as shown in
a photo in my manual (vintage 1995), because I was thinking that, with all
those pegs there, how do you get to clean all the excess Proseal that
squeezes out? --So I built a wooden frame, like a "window" frame, to fit
around the skin and baffle, tapered slightly to force the skin against the
baffle. Before applying the Proseal, I masked the surfaces that would
contact the spar doubler, so when Proseal squeezed out when riveting the
skin to the baffle, (and I used gobs of it),-who cares? I let it cure for
about 8 hours and then removed the masking tape.Easily done as the "window"
frame provided clear access. Result: No Proseal on the spar mounting
surfaces!

I just take the fitting off the end of my grease gun, add an adapter to
accommodate the hose fitting, connect the hose, fill with hydraulic oil,
screw on a pressure gauge at the other end, two or three pumps of the handle
and you can easily get about any pressure you need up to 2000 psi or so.

I have been perusing the archives regarding pressure testing hoses. I'd
like to make up a test rig to do my own. I have a few questions for those
in the hose know.
I am planning on testing with fluid (oil). Is it possible to get a valid
test with only air pressure (I understand the difficulties of getting 500psi
air pressure!)
I'm planning on using the pump from a porta-power plumbed through a valve,
through the hose, through a valve, and back to a reservoir feeding the
porta-power pump. If anyone has made something similar, can you contact me
off list with any details or lessons learned.
Aloha,

There is plenty in the archives on this. One thing you mention is that the
pilot would be shielded, which is certainly doable. However, it is doubtful
that the prop or the wings would be shielded, so you would get an annoying
amount of reflection from those. I even get a little reflection on my
(black) prop from the wing strobes. That's annoying enough. A strobe
reflecting off of the wings would be downright bothersome.

"Weird" electrical problems are very often caused by bad grounds.
Make sure that the panel itself is properly grounded. With the vibration
isolation, a bad ground can easily happen if a bond wire is not installed.
Sometimes paint prevents a proper ground too. Run a stout clip lead from
naked metal on the panel to the battery negative and see if the gremlins go
away, or are reduced somewhat.
right number for the alternator field windings. First, use a DC clamp-on
type meter to compare the indicated amps to the actual amps. If a clamp-on
is not available, pull one of the battery leads and insert an ammeter.
If the amps are "real" and not the result of a bad indicator, pull
the field wire on the alternator and see if that cuts down the 15 amp draw.
If you have the "one wire" style alternator, disconnect the single wire and
tape up the terminal to prevent any accidental shorts.

actual stab tip,) the stab tip would shade the pilot from the flash.
It would draw 1/2 the power of the two wing tip units.
What am I missing? Why don't folks do this?

According to the FAA, it is OK if the coverage is not 100%. A
single strobe on the tip of the stab is one of the standard systems given
as an example by the FAA. It is not an uncommon installation on OEM aircraft.
Indeed, the wing-tip method gives greater light distribution.
There is no question about that. However, you have to consider exactly what
direction it is possible/probable for another aircraft to collide with you.
The stab tip covers all the directions that another aircraft would likely
approach and collide. The only possible "blind spot" would be if you AND
the other aircraft were both climbing steeply in EXACT opposite directions.
Still, your position lights would be visible. Doesn't sound like much of a
problem or much added risk.

Hi:
Is the coaxial cable for the Com. Antenna, a solid

I do not have to remove all that work now....
Also, does any one have any problems, with reception
with the Wing tip mounted Nave antenna?
Reading notes from Aeroelectirc, Bob, says that
sometimes one would have, blind spots, and that
when landing, be aware that one would be on one side
of runway, and not in center, when under IMC..
I have not decided what type of antenna, to use..

I just flew into Oakland this past weekend. NorCal approach took me under the
Class B into the Class C. Gave me a straight-in to Rwy 27. No problem. Fueled
at self-serve pump at Kaiser Air and they provided a shuttle to the BART station.
There is a BART station in Fremont and the trains run regularly. There
was a $13 fee at Kaiser. I think the fee at Hayward was $10, but don't really
remember.
There is also a BART station in Hayward, but not sure if the local FBO provides
transportation. If I recall, gas was more expensive in Hayward.

I recently installed the wing tip nav antenna and so far I have not noticed
any difference in reception. As for lining up to the side of the runway; I
expect to break-out sufficiently above the runway to not even notice that
phenomena. With the nav antenna, however, I do see a somewhat negative
effect on range.

Folks,
The 'other' side........for those wondering if they NEED to spend the
money on this valve........I just finished my 8th (count 'em) oil change
since 1st flight last August. It takes less than a minute to snip the safety
wire on the drain plug and remove it. Then just a tad longer to reinstall and
safety wire (and, there IS a provision). No ball and no leaks. Not sure why
folks seem to need/want this valve. Please don't reply with "you can change
the oil 'without' removing the cowl"......I want to see in there.

RG-58 is a 50 ohm impedance cable which is the standard for RF comm.
equipment and has stranded center conductor. A solid center conductor would
be a 75 ohm cable which is in standard use in TV cables.

good luck,
I played with it for some time and never proved a thing as to what was
causing it.
It seems to be common to using Vans gauges, particualrly the amp and map
gauges. But Vans says there is no problem. Several of us have had this
problem. I have just learned to close my eyes when I talk on the radio.
One thing I haven't done yet is to stick a different battery in the AC for
instruments to test if the inteference is coming on the power/gnd side or
the signal side of the gauges. But I tried all types of coils and caps
trying to reduce or alter the problem. Nothing effected it, and the degree
of the problem would change.
The other thing I noted is that there is some feedback V coming from the amp
gauge shunt through the amp gauge into the instruments. This is evidenced by
the fact that the fuel gauges come on and wander around with the master
on/inst off and then stablize once the inst sw is on. The problem goes away
with the shunt disconnected from the amp gauge. Vans also says this can't be
occuring and is not a problem. I have tried three of their gauges, all with
the same results. And my wiring is correct and has been reviewed by several
folks.
Let me know if you figure it out.

There are arguments for and against solid center conductor coax. This is
not one of them. 50 ohm cable does come with either type of conductor.

I live near Chicago.
I fly an airplane and the Mayor does not want me there.
My only 4 wheel transportation is a light pickup and the Mayor does not want
me in certain areas of the city.
A real city like NYC does not have this idiocy.
I have avoided spending money in Chicago due to his attitude in the past. I
will attempt to spend nothing in the city or on products from the city.
I can get entertainment, airports, professional ball games, etc., in other
towns.
Enough said

Wheeler and others with Van's instruments.
Though I am not flying yet, in my tests of the instruments and avionics
I have observed similar effects with my Van's instruments. When I key a
transmitter, several of the instruments change wildly. I've been hoping
that someone had isolated the problem. I have not tried, yet. I've only
noted the effect. At some later time, I will try a few experiments to
see if I can find the source. In the meantime, I'd be interested in
anyone else's observations or findings.
Thanks.

--> RV-List message posted by: "Don Mack" <don@dmack.net>
Has anyone used an EIS 4000 with a Van's tachometer transducer? I already
have the transducer installed and wired and would rather not go back and use
GRT's magneto method of getting a tach reading. According to GRT, I may need
to modify the EIS4000 to handle the voltage from the transducer. Does anyone
know what voltage/amperage the transducer puts out on the signal line? If
you have already done it, did you have to modify the EIS 4000?

Wheeler, I wonder if anyone on the list tried another brand of Amp. Gauge
in this situation? Did the Gremlins go away?

Let's start with saying that I have not played around with this
specific amp gauge, but I have worked quite a bit with many others.
Most amp gauges and amperage measuring instruments want the shunt
to be located right next to the negative battery post. You must at least
put it first in line on the negative battery cable. Otherwise, the gauges
get what is called "large common mode voltages" which can drive them wacky.
There are high-end gauges that don't care where you put the shunt, but many
of the less expensive units are effected by the shunt placement.
The shunt puts out a tiny voltage, typically just a few millivolts.
sensing wire and the type of wire used. Shielded twisted pair is typically
recommended. This helps reduce the noise on the tiny signal

Larry,
Yes, you are right, there is a solid center-conductor 50 ohm cables with
similar diameters such as RG-55A/U and they are probably the best to use in
noisy environments (i.e. strobes) because they have a double shield braid
vice the -58, but with a slight weight penalty. It is not easily available
as the - 58. As you intimated, soldering the solid wire into a connector pin
is a problem in a high vibration environment.
The originator of this thread said his cable was RG 58. I have been using
RG-58C/U for over 58 years and my 1956 edition (4th) of "Reference Data For
Radio Engineers" published by International Telephones and Telegraph Corp
has a listing of all types of cables available at the time. The info on
RG-58C/U (if interested) is as follows:
Inner conductor: 19 strands 0.0071" tinned copper,
Dielectric: Polyethylene. Dia=0.116"
Braid: Single, tinned copper
Jacket: Noncontaminating synthetic resin.
Nominal overall dia: 0.195"
NOMINAL IMPEDANCE: 50.0 OHMS
Weight lb/ft: 0.029
Nominal capacitance uuf/ft: 28.5
Maximum operating voltage rms: 1,900
Remarks: Small-size flexible cable
So the easy way to determine which coax cable is which: The RG-58 has a
stranded center conductor vice the RG-59 which is solid copperweld, the -58
braid is tinned vice the -59 is bare copper and the diameter of the -59 is
0.047" thicker than the -59.
But the -55 has a solid silvered copper center conductor (0.035 dia) and a
double braid of silvered copper. The overall dia. is 0.026" less than
the -59.-- The advantage of using the -55 is that it has less attenuation
per 100 ft. at 100 MHZ, 5.5db for the -58, vs 4.7db for the -55.
Check it out!-------Cheers!!--Henry Hore

I confess I focused on the 50 ohm aspect more than the RG-58 designation,
but I did remember having seen solid center conductor RG-58. A quick search
yielded

Ok, Radio Shack is not where I would get my coax, but RG-58 is what they
call it.

Item 3 indicates RF from your transmitter is floating around in there
somewhere. It may be radiated, or it may be conducted. Some things to
review for radiated are:
1) Bonding and grounding of the radio and antenna
-ve power wire for the radio should be dedicated,
appropriate gauge, well
grounded and short.
2) Quality of Coax terminations at the connectors and proper
coax.
3) Antenna cable routing
It is a good idea to keep power grounds and audio grounds separate (but
close to each other at the airframe end)
If it is conducted, you might have RF coming down the audio or power
wires, and floating into other devices. You might try temporarily
powering the VHF from another power source and see if the interference
changes.
Wire routing sometimes causes problems you describe, but it is unlikely
that it would affect so many things.
I concur with Bill Dube's comments about grounding and bonding. Scrape
the paint, use sacrificial aluminum washers against the skin, etc. This
is well described in AC41.13-2A Chapter 15, 11.185 and onward, also see
Table 11-14.

Just finished up all the Electrics on my RV6-A in the Hanger (garage)
out back and have a small Gremlin. Everything works including transmit
and receiving on both Comm's.
Symptoms are as follows after turning on the Master:
1) About a 15 Amp. discharge shown on the Amp.
Gauge with only the Oil Pressure Light and BC Regulator Charge light
activated?
2) Everything works with no more discharge shown no
matter how many things are brought online?
3) Now it gets interesting........If I transmit on
either radio the following occurs:
a) CHT & EXT Gauges dance like crazy!
b) Amp Gauge goes Nuts!
c) Flap & Trim Indicators leds dance!
d) Fuel gauges advance very slightly even
though the wings and thus indicators are not hooked up?
The airport which is 3 miles away says I am transmitting
crystal clear even from inside my garage with a belly antenna?!?
Any suggestions of where to start looking would be appreciated as
I don't want to put the forward skin down till I get this fixed.

Brian-
I just drilled a safety wire hole centered on the end radius of the little
stainless steel handle. Works perfectly.

Some things just shouldn't be done. An orchestral interpretation of Dylan's
"Subterranean Homesick Blues" and a Blue Grass rendition of Pink Floyds'
"Interstellar Overdrive" are a couple of examples that come to mind. Oh, and
mounting strobes on horizontal stabilizer tips. ;o)

I'm guessing that you meant vertical stab tip.
Most of the spam you see with single tail strobe are going to have a
roof over the cockpit blocking the strobe flash from the panel. In fact,
Cessna's with tail strobes have a piece of metal in front of the tail
strobe to help keep the light from coming through that wrap around rear
glass. That's more drag on top of the more drag of an exposed beacon and
it blocks light to the front for anti-collision purposes. With a clear
canopy, it seems like the potential for annoying and distracting light
in the cockpit is high.
I've done enough night flying to have observed that, while position
lights are visible alright, your eyes are drawn to strobes and you see
them much sooner and further away. Then you look for the position lights
to help you figure out the direction of flight. Wingtip strobes have the
added benefit of making your airplane look much bigger. Having two
sources of light 24' apart is much more visible than a single light,
especially if they're alternating flashes and/or making multiple flashes
like the Whelan comet flash.
These are fast airplanes with potentially high closure rates to other
traffic. The more visible you are, the better chance of them avoiding
you if you don't see them first. Go for the brightest, flashingest,
multiple light setup you can afford.
My opinion,
Ed Holyoke
