--> RV-List message posted by: "David Carter" <dcarter@datarecall.net> I've lost either an e-mail or a web-site that described how to have two panel mounted push-pull throtles, one on left for pilot flying with right hand on stick, other pretty much in standard center position for 'passenger'. It talked about attaching a short cable from the left throttle to a point on the main-full length cable from center at a point aft of the firewall, with only the center cable going thru firewall. Can anyone help me relocate this info? David Carter RV-6 Nederland, Texas

--> RV-List message posted by: "Elsa & Henry" <elsa-henry@darlor-watch.com> I turned some ivory vinyl siding (left-overs from house work) to make a bunch of 9/16" dia. washers and used them instead of the aluminum strip. Each washer is sandwiched between the plexi and a -6L washer with a #6 low-profile nylock nut. Looks very neat. I also used the -6L washers and #6 low-profile nylocks along the tip-up sides. They weigh less than the UHMW strips supplied in the kit and I tightened the screws just enough so that the nuts can still be rotated by hand.

I wanted to know if the shading from the forward part of the stab would be adequate and if reflection from the wings would present a problem or if there were any hidden issues that I had overlooked. I know exactly where to mount the strobe now. This sort of "It works for me." or "It didn't work when I tried it." information is what makes this discussion list great. Thanks again!

They look cool, and I thought about it, but it seemed to me to be one more thing to break or go wrong. I have had the landing light fail on a moonless night and I would not wish to repeat that experience. You have no way to know if the runway is blocked by a deer or a parked truck. Taxiing with a flashlight out the window was no joy either. I was very relieved to get the plane on the ground and parked in one piece that night.

--> RV-List message posted by: lm4@juno.com Imagine this. Three runways crossed by three runways on a brand new airport. Situate the airport on a lake shore near a rail line and an expressway so it can use rail frieght loading docks as well as truck loading docks. Since car sales have been rather poor, you might want to put the field in Michigan so as to create some jobs. If you put it on the lake shore you could build Ferry docks. The Airline passengers would then have access to downtown Chicago. Perhaps you could build docks in chicago to land the ferry's at,oh, some place like a wildlife refuge, Meigs wildlife refuge comes to mind. Where would all this money come from ? Well, O'Hare field was looking for 6.5 Billion and is not going to get it. Maybe the money they wanted for O'Hare could get passed over to this new airport. We could call it Gary Beikirk field. This would relieve Chicagoans from a lot of the hazards they face from aviation. --> RV-List message posted by: "T H" <flyinggrizz@hotmail.com> Before you exercise your right to free speech and make any comment to Mayor Daleys office, consider the consequences. Under the new unconstitutional pilot insecurity rules, the FAA will revoke the licenses of any pilot deemed by the TSA to be a risk to transportation security. You will have no prior notice, no prior chance to challenge the charge and you will not be allowed to see the evidence that deemed you a risk. You may appeal but only to the TSA who has already found you guilty. Meigs was closed because political backroom deals allowed it. The Chicago TFR was first denied by the TSA/FAA and then granted because of political pressure. The official reason for closing Meigs was homeland security. When dealing with this type of mindset, If you arent with us youre against us, any criticism makes you a security risk. If the mayor can bully the TSA and FAA into an unnecessary TFR, he can just as easily bully them into deeming his critics risks to security. "The greatest threat to freedom, even in today's perilous times, comes from no foreign force. It comes from the dangerous habit many of our leaders fell into over several generations -- letting the power and the resources that are the basis of freedom slip from grass-roots America into the hands of a remote central authority." -- Ronald Reagan, 1982 In this age of terrorism, power and resources no longer slip into the hands of central authorities, as President Reagan warned two decades ago they are unabashedly snatched by leaders who claim to be promoting security. Our country has changed and the freedoms we all grew up with are no longer assured. Speak out if you will, but dont be surprised when you open your mail one day and find you are no longer allowed to fly. T. G. Hayhurst

--> RV-List message posted by: Geoff Evans <hellothaimassage@yahoo.com> I'm looking at the Cardinal A-4100 series acrylic enamel aerosol for my interior paint. Has anyone shot this paint over Akzo 2-part epoxy primer? The Akzo is pretty green, and I'm wondering if the Cardinal paint will cover it up well enough. While the Akzo is very durable and impervious to Acetone, MEK, etc., the clear primer that came on my QB kit is not nearly as durable. How should I clean the dust, oil, and other accumulated gunk off the surfaces that were previously primed on the QB without removing the primer in the process? I noticed in the archives that some people did not prime their interiors before painting. How is this working out? It it really a good idea? Thanks. -Geoff RV-8 QB fuselage http://tax.yahoo.com

--> RV-List message posted by: Jim Duckett <perfeng@3rivers.net> Dan, Jerry is right. Black will be really hot even on what seems to be a cool day. Even your 19 degree difference from a red is to be considered IMHO. The dark pigments don't have very much reflectivity (as in heat) as the lighter ones do. With this in mind it will hold heat longer too. As for primer and paint, for base primer your probably talking about 1 -2.25 gallons for a 3-5 mil coverage over all using vari-prime (@ 18 Lbs / Gal. weight) and Imron for base color over all for a 5-7 mill coverage will be about the same figures. These are just color and primer. You will still have to figure on activator and reducers as well as wash thinner to clean everything up afterwards. What we've been having good success with is PPG Commercial Coatings Wash Primer PLC 900 using PLC 901 activator. The weight figures to be around 10# per Gal. and it takes the place of both Alodining and vari-Prime. The best part it's a little better than half the cost of Vari-Prime alone. We still use Vari-Prime on all internal parts and components but the wash primer under Du Pont , PPG and Randolph for exterior has been working fine for us. Worth what you paid for it. Jim D. "They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety." -- Benjamin Franklin, 1759 Historical Review of Pennsylvania I think an important thing to remember is that we should fight for all freedoms not just the ones that are important to us. It would be much harder for those in power to take away our freedoms if it was everyone fighting back when some freedom is being taken away not just having pilots fighting for the freedom to fly or gun owners fighting for the right to own guns. Or whatever the freedom might be, and it seems like we are loosing a lot of them lately. --> RV-List message posted by: "LarryRobertHelming" <lhelming@sigecom.net> Dan, I made the optional backing strips. Looked to me like it was just as easy making them ( used two strips per side that overlap at one point ) compared to using individual washers or independent washers/strips. Primed them to match the inside color of the rest of the interior too. Looks to me like the continuous strips can spread the load more evenly on the Plexiglas and hopefully not induce any cracks where they are not wanted. Larry in Indiana, RV7 Tip-up O-360 3XG reserved. --> RV-List message posted by: "Patrick Kelley" <webmaster@flion.com> For those that have been following my project over the past eight years, I have once again updated my website with new chapters and photos. The url is www.flion.com <http://www.flion.com/> or, for those of you running less than 1024x768 resolution, www.flion.com/rv6a/Default.htm will take you there. I've finished the fuselage structure prior to skinning. I've also just abandoned the film cameras I've been using; I was just unable to get good close-ups with them. Now I've got a good quality digital camera; you'll notice the difference in the last chapter. Not only that, I'll be able to update more often - a couple times a month, I hope. I've taken a cue from Dan Checkoway and started adding arrows and lines to my pictures. Finally, I downsize my photos on the web page, but the actual image sizes are often 2-3 times what you see. You can save the pictures to your system by right clicking on them, if you want, and then open them at their original size. Enjoy. With this in mind it will hold heat longer too. Actually that isn't true. Black aluminum will both collect and radiate heat faster than a lighter color. But as you corectly point out, it can make a huge difference in how hot it gets in the sun. What I wonder, for thoes who have to have black, is if a good high gloss UV blocking clear coat would help reduce the effect some what. Chris W

Everything in the archives mentions this box in conjunction with the RV-7 or RV-9. Is there something specific about the box that would prevent its use on a -8? Also, I'm planning to put my battery in the baggage well as many others have done. Is there anything about this battery box that would prevent it from being mounted on the back side of the firewall (in the baggage well) instead of the forward side of the firewall as originally intended? Thanks. -Geoff RV-8 QB fuselage http://tax.yahoo.com

--> RV-List message posted by: "Jack Blomgren" <jackanet@hotmail.com> Geoff, For some unknown reason I failed to etch prime (no prime at all) the cockpit side of just one of my -8 gear towers, and evidently just shot it with Cardinal 4108 (rattle can paint). To answer your question, this did not turn out very satisfactorily. Working on interior items near the tower I quite easily, but unintentionally, abraided, chipped or otherwise scraped away some of the Cardinal. Now I will pay the price by removing the more exposed 4108, tape around the offending section, etch prime, and 4108 again. Hope my error helps you. Having a little fun rolling the bare canopy frame back and forth while the canopy remains safely in its crate until the weather warms. I've kept the fuselage down on it's knees about as long practical and will soon need to put the gear on and make some work platforms like the big boys use. (I've used Van's crates for everything from footing forms while building my shop to strengthening the roof truss web above my I-beam hoist.) Over the years, I wonder how many things have been made from Van's packing crates. Subject: Matronics ISP Upgrade COMPLETED!
--> RV-List message posted by: Matt Dralle <dralle@matronics.com> Dear Listers, I just wanted to send out a quick note to let everyone know that the 1.5Mb T1 connection upgrade went smoothly today. They brought up the new line and router yesterday on a test subnet and today the ISP switched over connectivity about 12 noon with little to no incident. I just finished some performance testing, and it appears that actual throughput and interactive response is noticeably improved as advertised! Enjoy! Matt Dralle Matronics Email List Admin.
