--> RV-List message posted by: "Elsa & Henry" <elsa-henry@darlor-watch.com> Dan, I encountered the same thing when I went to install the nose gear in my -6A. The AN 514 Nut that is provided was a Nylock. And you are right, NO NYLOCKS FIREWALL FORWARD! I did speak to Van's about it, but their reply was not satisfactory to me ("500 other builders didn't have a problem---" [Bill Benedict])-- Anyway, I had bought extra screws and nuts to have on hand and I had a metal spare one that was installed. The interesting thing is when I had my final inspection, the MDRA (Canadian) inspector looked at every nut and bolt F/F and commented "--Good work no nylocks--" I think he was disappointed not to write-up a snag on that! Cheers!!-----Henry Hore

I bought Bob Haan's Wig Wag flasher. It looks very robust. The whole thing is encased in a bock of epoxy within three sides of aluminum with just the wires sticking out. It includes two wires that can be hooked up to panel LED indicators that will let you know if a landing light bulb fails. Very cool set up. I'm not flying yet but I have been told that Bob's flasher makes no electronic noise. I have heard that some of the cheaper police wig wag units create clicking in the headset. Wouldn't want that.... However there is a guy who is developing a similar product. I think he's just getting the first prototypes made now. So if you hang tough a little while you may be in luck. I can't say more than that; he is on the list occasionally so maybe he'll chime in. Randall Henderson, RV-6 N6R (~450 hrs) Portland, OR www.vanshomewing.org

--> RV-List message posted by: "Phil Birkelbach" <phil@petrasoft.net> WHOOOOPPPP!!! Bill Clinton cut the military budget every year he was in office. He closed bases all over this country. Pilots were flying aircraft that were not being maintained properly because of a lack of spare parts. Equipment was rusting away and then he went and shot all of our Tomahawks at a camel in Iraq to take attention away from his... well you know. Ask anybody that was in the military during the last years of the Clinton reign and see if they think that he supported them. 42% of voters, chose to keep him in office, and now they all want to feel good about themselves by saying that they 'Support the Troops' It has nothing to do with what they say, but with what they do. We'll see how much they support the troops after this is all said and done, we are no longer at war and it comes time to choose between our troops paychecks and Ted Kennedy's next social program. The best way to Support our Troops at the moment is to quit all this petty bickering about whether we should be in Iraq or not and realize that WE ARE IN IRAQ, and make sure that our soldiers know that we wish them success and think of each and every one of them as HEROES who are fighting for something worth fighting for. How would you like to be in Iraq right now being shot at and risking your life for "Comic Book Diplomacy." ARRRRGGGGGHHHHH!!!!!!! Sorry I just couldn't stand it anymore. By all means Do Not Archive. --> RV-List message posted by: "Van Artsdalen, Scott" <svanarts@unionsafe.com> Amen Dr. Leathers. Kysh, this isn't an attack against you but wake up and look around. War protesters get plenty of news media coverage and plenty of them hate the military. It seems to be popular to hate America right now. We have people (probably French Candadian) spitting on American Pee Wee hockey players (spitting on children, that's right) because they are American. We have people booing our National Anthem. Our troops and our country as a whole will stand tall, chin up, and do the right thing. If I ever see someone spit on a soldier, marine, airman, or sailor, I'll deck the spitter myself because the soldier, marine, airman, or sailor won't. -- Scott VanArtsdalen Network Manager Union Safe Deposit Bank 209-946-5116 -----Original Message----- From: Dr. Kevin P. This is way off-topic, and in danger of getting out-of-hand quickly, so I'll keep my reply short, and I will make it my last public reply to this entire thread. I felt a bit guilty making my initial reply because of the off-topic nature of the subject; However, I felt that someone should say something. Now to the point at hand. I took your advice, and I did look it up. This is what I found: In a letter in 1969, to a 'Colonel Holmes' (UofA ROTC), Clinton says: "... I am writing this too in the hope that my telling this one story will help you understand more clearly how so many fine people have come to find themselves still loving their country but loathing the military, to which you and other good men have devoted years, lifetimes, of the best service you could give." Now, I am not content to just take one source for granted, under any circumstances. I kept looking. I found a great many references about the same letter, but none of them quoted it. I found a great many attributions of the quote to Clinton. I was unable to find a coherant reference from any place that quoted Clinton as saying "I loathe the military" to an actual quote from Clinton. I'll reiterate- He wrote this in 1969, when a majority of America felt that way, purportedly. "... We come to bury Caesar, not to praise him." do not archive do not archive do not archive do not archive do not archive do not archive -Kysh -- | 'Life begins at 120kias' - http://www.lapdragon.org/flying | | CBR-F4 streetbike - http://www.lapdragon.org/cbr | | 1968 Mustang fastback - http://www.lapdragon.org/mustang | | Got 'nix? - http://www.infrastructure.org/ | | KG6FOB - http://www.lapdragon.org/ham | | Give blood: Play Hockey! http://www.unixdragon.com/ |

Besides being a nav/com, isn't this a WAAS GPS with color high-resolution moving map and complete data base, plus the control head for a remotely mounted transponder? It has a front-panel card slot for updates to it's Jeppesen data base. I expect this to push the price of the Garmin's down and maybe make a few of them available used. I can't afford it either, but I am delighted to see it. What is the world coming to. There are plenty of new cars cheaper than this. How many do they think they are going to sell? How many home builders have that kind of money? What does the other $11, 901 buy - software, a processor, a display and a low power radio? When will we get someone to market to the masses? Haven't you noticed the trend that prices in avionics don't really go down? New products are just more expensive! -Kysh do not archive No, that's not what I see at all. What I see is two things happening: first, we are getting many more choices in types of avionics, from moving maps to electronic flight information systems to heads up displays, which are of course more expensive at least to begin with than what they improve on or replace, such as a basic nav/com with a CDI. Then there is the innovation and competition that tries to find a market. Sierra Flight Systems, now Chelton comes along with a $40,000 electronic flight information system, drastically cheaper than the equivalent previously available only for much more than the price of our airplanes. Blue Mountain tries to do about the same thing for $12,000. Dynon does a good part of that for $2,000. Look around and you will see many new products on or just coming to the market and they know their only hope of surviving is doing what we want done better or cheaper or both. If all you need or want is a good com and a hand-held GPS with a moving map and data base of all the airports on the continent, buy a Microair and a Garmin 196 for about $1700 for both. If you don't need the moving map, you can get a good GPS for $100, or the Com and the GPS, all new and nearly state of the art for $800.00. We don't have to buy the expensive new stuff like the Garmin 430 or the new UPS unit, but we now have that choice. The real innovation and price reductions are only available to experimentals. Watch how companies like Vans or Blue Mountain or Dynon or Tru-Trak innovate, compared to Lycoming or Cessna or even Garmin and UPS. Free minds and free markets. What a concept! Terry

--> RV-List message posted by: "Tom & Cathy Ervin" <tcervin@valkyrie.net> List, Worked all day (It's Friday) and nothing was wired wrong or were there any loose grounds!! My A/P just came down with his handy dandy high tech equipment and determined either my Van's Amp. Gauge or the Shunt is Junk! am drawing about a 4 amp. discharge which he says is about right. Does anyone know a test that will show if it's the Gauge or Shunt? If I replace the Amp. Gauge with another 2 1/4" Steam Gauge what have you had luck with?? Thanks for all the help! --> RV-List message posted by: Wheeler North <wnorth@sdccd.cc.ca.us> Are any of you guys looking at the new tablet pcs? The slate versions seem like they would be great on a panel somewhere, but they are all too big. Anybody seen one smaller, say 5" by 7"? Some of them have an integrated GPS option as well. This would work fantastic with flitesoft and vista map. A digital cell modem and one could fly low and log into duats realtime. http://www.thetabletpc.net/ list most of them and compares them. The last two seem to be very rugged and made for military use. do not archive
