Bill-
I am here at Sun & Fun and there is a company here with a booth selling an
auto pilot that can be hooked up to a handheld GPS. If I get a chance today
I will try to go back (if I can re-find where I saw them) and get more info.

Carl,
It's call TSO. Certified GPS has a few things (RAIM) that that a hand held does
not have but the big cost driver is the number of engineering hours that goes
into getting the FAA to sign off. This is not a bad thing, it keeps engineers
employed so we can afford to build RVs.

Stupid, isn't it? For $99 you can get a GPS receiver with enough accuracy
to do anything you want. What does the other $11, 901 buy - software, a
processor, a display and a low power radio? When will we get someone to
market to the masses?

Kysh,
Absolutely no slam against you...
I was in the Air Force. I started under Reagan. I ended under Clinton. It
was really, truly amazing. There was no money for training flights. There
were planes that were "hangar queens" because we didn't have parts. Yet, we
were hustling all over the world doing "humanitarian missions". The morale
is something you would have had to see to really understand.
A short anecdote. I worked in a Squadron at McChord AFB in Tacoma,
Washington. I had a great Squadron Commander, a man of principle and
integrity. He was also an "up and comer". A guy that was progressing up
the ranks rapidly. After less than a year of the Clinton Administration, he
resigned his commission and left the Air Force, saying he could not in good
conscience work under that man. So the Air Force lost one of it's best
officers and leaders (and later many more). He now works for Alaska
Airlines and is considerably happier, so there was a silver lining. So who
won? The Country, or my old Commander? A shame they couldn't have both
won.
You really would have had to see the decimation of the Air Force to
understand the sentiment.
"We support the troops". It's in vogue to say that. But look at actions,
rather than words. The real picture is in stark contrast.

O.K. I have to weigh in on this a bit.
I used to live in Fremont and flew out of Reid-Hillview. I seem to
recall that takes just about as long to drive from Fremont to Hayward
as it did to get to RHV. So, I don't necessarily buy that Hayward is
easier or faster to get to. RHV is well outside of the SF Class B and
just outside of the SJC Class C. HWD is under both the SF Class B and
the OAK Class C. If your xpndr is wacked you can't get in to HWD. LVK
is east of Fremont about a 20 mins by car. It has quite a bit of
transient space and is very close to the freeway (I-580). It has an ILS
and all amenities, including rental cars. LVK is well outside of SF
Class C airspace. There is a BART station in Dublin, which is about 3
miles west on the freeway.
All in all, using Bay Approach is no problem for any of the SFBA
airports (OAK Center for LVK flight following), but why bother if you
just need a convenient airport. Livermore isn't really any further away
and I think it costs a little less (don't know what fees there might
be). I think that LVK is just as convenient and any others in the SFBA.
Maybe even a little more friendly. ;) Besides, everything in the SFBA
is 45 minutes away by car. :
o
BTW... I live in Livermore now and my house is about 3/4 of mile from
the approach end of 25R. Rock your wings on final and I'll wave back.
Please, just keep your RPMs low for the sensitive ears of those who
don't appreciate our passion.

I know that when I was helping Matt our RV-list host test his

it was a friendly place and good food at the restaurant over looking

You are right, Terry and you too, Kysh -- IMHO
I've watched the avionics dealers ads in TAP for several years and I see
the same old stuff listed for the same old price. It may be possible that
inflation is exactly the same as obsolecense but I doubt it. You'd think
with the current recession there would be a few sales! They might save ad
money by saying "See last issues ads". I suppose most aviators just keep
on paying.
VFR flyers can get by pretty cheap tho. The ICOM panel mount is less than
$900 and a used Northstar M1 loran unit is half of that. Both, in my own
experience, are excellent devices. I guess GPS handhelds are real cheap
too. I have a non-color Skyforce GPS (now King) which is still over $1000
but is fine. For IFR pilots, shouldn't they be using VOR system primarily
and just one of these VFR solutions for backup?
My IFR solution will be:
1 - ICOM panel mount com radio - new $800 (at OSH)
1 - NARCO nav 824 vor unit with ID824 indicator - used - $1000
1 - Garmin 327 transponder $1200
1- Skyforce GPS new $1200
The only real IFR requirement meeting device is the NARCO at $1000. Yes,
that was a good deal.

Missed the start of the wear red thread but thought most of us could get
behind the following:
Next month is National Military Appreciation Month. The Department of
Defense is providing an opportunity for
Americans to thank the men and women of the U. S. military services for
defending our freedom by sending them at the end
of the month a compiled list of names together with an expression of
appreciation.
You can sign in and add your name at

So far almost 13 million people have signed the thank you note.

Well I have just finished a little organizing of my bookmarks, updated
them on my webserver and thought I would send everyone a link to the

but I thought for those who are new it might be handy and quicker than
searching google for hours on end. Please feel free to comment on any
changes that might need to be made in organization or any dead links.

Keep in mind that this server is run on a machine that has a DHCP IP

change and you want to get at it again just email me and I can tell you

Just because 500 people did it wrong doesn't make it right!
Wasn't there a case a few years back of a Lear electrical power upgrade, and
the first guy routed the wires wrong, so 19 other installations were done
the same way because the other installers were copying the first guy's
mistakes. I think two aircraft were lost due to this. I believe it was
something like the fried wire toasted the engine mount.

Dan,
I encountered the same thing when I went to install the nose gear in my -6A.
The AN 514 Nut that is provided was a Nylock. And you are right, NO NYLOCKS
FIREWALL FORWARD! I did speak to Van's about it, but their reply was not
satisfactory to me ("500 other builders didn't have a problem---" [Bill
Benedict])-- Anyway, I had bought extra screws and nuts to have on hand and
I had a metal spare one that was installed.
The interesting thing is when I had my final inspection, the MDRA (Canadian)
inspector looked at every nut and bolt F/F and commented "--Good work no
nylocks--" I think he was disappointed not to write-up a snag on that!
Cheers!!-----Henry Hore

On the RV-6, I used a scrap of wood (in this case, the cut-out from the
rudder jig pieces) that was wedged in there and then drilled to match.
Next I took it out and countersunk the holes, forming a custom female
die. A couple of light whacks with a male die and hammer made
acceptable dimples. Wait until you have to modify a bucking bar to fit
in a tight place like that...
