There are mixed feelings on this subject. I've discussed it often with my
IA buddies who say it's OK to use them if done with care. I also had a
Grumman-American Cheetah that had them firewall forward. I flew it for over
9.5 years and had no trouble with them. I used them in my RV's engine
compartment and am not losing sleep over it. The main thing is to not use
them near the exhaust system. We don't want the nylon friction device to be
melted by the heat. To make sure all is well with them, just check the ones
that concern you at oil changes, annuals, etc. The one on my RV's nose gear
seems to be doing OK after three years and over 200 hours of operation. I'd
almost be willing to bet that Van's Old Blue RV-6A has one of those nuts on
the nose gear. Right, or wrong, it seems to work without failure.
OK, to add fuel to the fire. Should we use nylon tie wraps firewall
forward? I'm betting that any of you who've been around airplanes very
much have seen a ton of them in front of the firewall, just as I have. :-)

Hey listers,
Anyone out there have a #22 size pin removal/insertion tool? It would be smaller
than the tool that you would use on your UPSAT gear (I have one of those).
It is for the high density connectors (like S-Tec).
If so, where did you get it? I've already tried mouser/digikey/altex...all they
have is the bigger ones. I know that this is a fairly inexpensive tool...but
when you don't have one it's worth a fortune...!
I've already sent a zap to the connector manufacturer - but I thought I'd try you
guy/gals too!
Thanks for your assistance,
Ralph Capen

Pursuant to Patrick Kelly's response to the subject, I used a piece of 2" X
2" X 1/8" thk. angle iron firmly clamped in a drill-press vice to hold it. I
had cut the side that will do the bucking to 3/4" wide, (enough to enter the
space between the rib flanges), and polished it on a belt sander. I
countersunk a #40 hole to act as a female dimple-die.- Worked fine! Then it
worked great to buck the rivets. I cut the length of the angle-iron to the
width of the jaws of the drill-press vice to provide ample rigidity to
absorb the riveting shock impulses.
I found this "tool" useful in other tight spaces on tapered ends of control
surfaces. As it turned out I ended cutting-off the rear tip of the rudder
(where I first used it), to install a Whelen tail/strobe light combination
there! Oh well--

Ralph,
I needed the same tool to reverse the servo direction in my S-Tec 30 and to
run the cable through numerous conduits. I called tech support and they sent
me two different size tools, gratis.

Check the Cannon catalog. We used theirs, at work years ago, and maybe
you'll find what you need. Cheers!! Henry Hore

AN932-2 (1/8"MNPT steel hex socket plug). I couldn't find the steel version
in ACS or Wicks, but this is what you should use. The aluminum ones could
cold weld themselves into the head after a time, so steel is better in this
application.
