--> RV-List message posted by: "Jim Jewell" <jjewell@telus.net>
I just looked into the archives Re-AN-363 The self locking nuts that were supplied
with the Allen head bolt for the main gear brake mounting flange.
I found that I am not alone in having the supplied self locking nut crack during
installation.
For any builders out there that took delivery of their kits around 1997 be aware
that the an 363 course thread non fiber lock nut might be a faulty part.
As described by others in the archives the nut cracked in half during installation
at the point where the threads began to run into the locking section of the
nut.
I am glad it broke when and as it did so that now I won't be riding with a potential
weakness waiting to get me. I would think that should this part fail after
installation some dangerous and expensive damage could be inflicted.
The way this nut fell apart I doubt that a failure after installation is likely,
but just in case I am offering this heads up.
I will be checking with Van's in the AM. I expect that they will refer me to the
aircraft section of the local HW where there are many 'shiny nickel plated'
self course thread fiber self locking nuts in stock.

Since the MT prop has a wooden core and is self-dampening there shouldn't be
any more problem than with any other wood prop. But I'll bet dollars to
donuts that a vibration frequency analysis had to be done as part of the FAA
certification.
A metal prop on the other hand I have heard described as a tuning fork. It
has a natural resonance. If it is excited by the engine pulses is will go
into a destructive mode at certain frequencies. The frequency generally is
designed so that these destructive frequencies are not in the normal
operating range. Ideally they are above the red line but some old
engine-prop combos have an avoidance range just above 2000 rpm and are so
placarded. There will be nodes along the blade. If it is notched or nicked
at these critical points, the prop will break at that point. These nodes
will move into a critical point when a prop is shortened, also causing
failure that is so violent that it will rip the engine out of the airplane.
We had several failures of this type years ago with the Thorp.

Just got back in from the annual trip to holy land. There were impacts from
the change in starting dates but 2.5 rows of RVs were present with plenty
for anyone to see. The biggest change I saw were three large
"Margaritaville" tents over at the corner of the museum. This turned out to
be a hopping spot with food and beverage (yes, they started serving adult
beverages on site this year), live Buffett music and just a nice place to
meet up with people.
http://rvflying.tripod.com/marga.jpg
On Saturday we ended up having 45+ RV'ers show up at my campsite for brats
and beverage. We went through 100 brats and three cases of adult beverage
in no time. It was great to put some faces to names, Rick Gray, Kyle
Boatright, Mike Stewart and the Team RV crew along with many others, too
many to mention. We had a great time. Afterward, I hooked up with Kyle and
Wayne and watched the night airshow. As it turned out, 4 RV'ers were
camping within a stones throw of my tent and we would have never known it
had we not had out little get together Sat afternoon.
Here's a picture of Rick Gray getting the news he had won "something" with
his beautiful 6 but would be unable to attend the banquet. As of this
email, it is still a mystery award to me. Anyway, here's the proud papa.

And for us 7 guys, here you go.....three 7s were at SNF

Once again, it was great putting faces to names. The ol beer and brats may
just have to be an annual thing!!

March 31, 2003
Published by: FAA, AIR-140, P.O. Box 26460, Oklahoma City, OK 73125
AFFECTED PRODUCTS
All propellers maintained, altered, or approved for return to service by T
and W Propellers, Inc. (Chino, CA).
PURPOSE
The purpose of this notification is to advise all aircraft owners,
operators, manufacturers, maintenance organizations, and parts distributors
regarding propellers maintained by T and W Propellers, Inc.
(T and W), 7000 Merrill Avenue, Building E3, #50, Chino, CA 91710. T and W
previously held Air Agency Certificate No. T6WR776N.
BACKGROUND
Information received during a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) accident
investigation revealed that T and W had failed to accomplish maintenance in
accordance with the manufacturers' maintenance manuals (such as Hartzell
Manual 133C, Hartzell Manual 202A, and Hartzell Service Bulletin 136H) or
FAA-approved procedures. Improper procedures included failure to perform
nondestructive inspections in accordance with FAA-approved procedures.
Evidence indicated that
T and W installed incorrect hardware and may have falsified work orders and
other documentation associated with approving the propellers for return to
service. The FAA has been unable to determine the exact time span during
which the improper maintenance occurred. Therefore, all propellers that
T and W maintained or approved for return to service from approximately 1997
until 2003 are suspect.
RECOMMENDATION
Regulations require that type-certificated products conform to their type
design and be properly maintained using current data, required equipment,
and appropriately trained personnel. Aircraft owners, operators,
maintenance organizations, and parts distributors should inspect their
aircraft, aircraft records, and/or parts inventories for any propeller work
accomplished by T and W. If any propellers are installed on aircraft,
appropriate action should be taken. If any propellers are found in existing
inventory, it is recommended that the propellers be quarantined to prevent
installation until a determination can be made regarding each propeller's
eligibility for installation.
FURTHER INFORMATION
Further information concerning this investigation may be obtained from the
FAA Flight Standards District Office (FSDO) given below. The FAA would
appreciate any information concerning the discovery of the above-referenced
propellers from any source, the means used to identify the source, and the
action taken to remove the propellers from service.

Dana,
Sorry I missed your Sat nite Brats. Was there Wed to Sat noon. Met with
listers at noon each of those days. Helped to put some faces on folks from
the list.
Hope everyone is getting thru the weather that has Fla cut off to the north.
Be interesting to hear some reports.
I personally like the format of wed opening. Think Van should plan on the
banquet about thursday nite to maximise the potential attendance. It felt
like the RV's are already dominating the HB flight line. In years past there
were a great number about sunday evening and dried up by wed, so if anything
I think we had more planes on the average there. I was amazed at how many
were in HB camping area. Offered some a ride to dinner one nite and they
said they were cooking steaks, no thanks on the ride.
I did not fly because do not like high density uncontrolled traffic and
having wheels lets one escape to different food. My usual riders were rotary
RV'ers from arizona, alabama, and NC. There were 5 rotary powered RV's.
Tracy Crook won the 160hp RV class at 209mph. Did not see any eggenfellner
RV's other than the static display in their exhibitors area. They should
start showing up in mass since there are supposedly 200 sold to RV builders.
Hope they turn out good since so many have invested in them.
Bill Eslick (sp) from DFW area and an AA captain
was there in his rotary with a tangenial muffler and it sounded like a car.
Martin Sutter who lives at the same airpark reported that he believed that
Bill had less teething problems when he started flying than most lycoming
folks. Martin flew in the airplane and said it was almost erie from lack of
vibration and noise :>). Bill is down on power from the other rotarys. Hope
it is all in his intake system .The design is pretty obviously hurting
power.

I was thinking to install the wig-wag, galls
flasher, the FS039 model..
It comes with the on/off switch, power indicator
light, front mounted fuse and wire 12ft.
Does any one has installed this unit? I see some of
you, have installed the FS034 model, it calls for
direct wire, it does no say if it includes same as above.
Would like to see how is connected...
Thanks for the replies..

Bernie,
The 2 RV from South Carolina arrived on Friday (least amount of time
off work). It seems like most of the action took place at the beginning
of the show. Next year I plan to bite the bullet and come at the
beginning of the show. We did have some problems with weather. Our
airplanes are in a hangar on St Simons Island. We ran into a nice
couple with a T-6 that was also stuck and was heading toward Columbia in
the last available rental car. They gave us a ride.
By the time we left on Monday at noon there was only a hand full of RV
left. How was the homebuilt camping? Was there much traffic over
there? And most important how was the showers?

It's a muffler where the header pipes (only two on a rotary) enter the
muffler can at a tangent (creates a circulation that dissipates the sound
energy). Exhaust goes out a central tube full of holes (inside the muffler)
then exits out the rear with a single pipe.

Yes,
I too would like to see that information. Lycoming generally doesn't publish
this kind of thing as it completely depends on the aircraft/engine/prop
combination. It is therefore normally published in the POH, if such a range
exists and is often required to be indicated on the engine go fast meter.
Sensenich has tested and approved their EXP (FM Series) prop for all RPMs up
to redline (the one Vans sells for 0360s). On the one for O-320s they have
limited it to 2650 I believe because there is a fourth order resonance at
about 2850, and they want to stay 200 RPM away from it. (I think this uses
the CM series).
Now that being said, there are definately some O-360 aircraft with mid range
limitations, but not all of them have those limitations. Also, Lycoming
doesn't always practice what they preach. Some of their POHs say max CHT is
500f but every one of their engineers say keep it well below 450 for all of
their products. Go figure???

I would like to clarify a minor omission I made in the response to nyloks.
Not all nyloks are the same, most seem to be rated to about 250f, but they
do come in higher and lower operating ranges. I specially ordered some of
these for fwl fwd applications. They are also Grade 8 hwd. Most of
Lycoming's hwd is Grade 5. I used a local hwd specialty store to purchase
these.

of exchanging RV information with one another in as short a time as possible.
Intended only to broaden and promote the RV experience, the success of this Yahoo
group forum will be based entirely upon the support (or die for the lack

of the "RV Grin" is to offer an alternative open forum for the free and open
distribution of thoughts and ideas relative to the RV experience. If you are
of a mind, check out and participate in this brand new Yahoo group dedicated to

Thanks. This sounds like the NTSB and FAA are doing their job. There was a

factor of this fatal accident.

and W Propellers, Inc.
This notice originated from the Riverside FSDO, 6961 Flight Road, Riverside,
CA 92504, telephone (909) 276-6701, fax (909) 689-4309; and was published
through the FAA Suspected Unapproved Parts Program Office, AVR-20, telephone

Subject: | Van's Windscreen VHF Comm Antenna |
--> RV-List message posted by: John Allen <fliier@yahoo.com>
I had very good luck with the windscreen antenna.
I have a GX-60 GPS/COM attached to an external COMANT antenna on top of the fuselage
aft of the slider. The KX-125 operates off the windscreen antenna.
I am able to use both radios without difficulty. I find that there are times when
the windscreen antenna works better than the TSO'd antenna, and visa-versa.
I haven't noticed any particular problem with the windscreen antenna being
directional, though I'm sure there must be some of that. The only real problem
I have encountered is there is more "scratchiness" on the KX-125 during some
ground ops.
One drawback to the windscreen antenna is that it looks less professional from
the outside. There is no issue on the inside since I mounted it so that when
I am seated the antenna is directly behind the roll-bar support and hardly visible.

--> RV-List message posted by: "Ken Simmons" <ken@truckstop.com>
I'm working on sealing my fuel tanks. I've seen many pictures of this
process and the technique varies quite a bit. Specifically the amount of
proseal used. I've seen some tanks with very little proseal on external
fittings and some where it's applied pretty heavily (including George's
video). Why is this? The idea is to keep the fuel on the inside of the
tank so what's the purpose of the heavy coating externally? Perhaps this
is why some can do both tanks with less than a quart and some require a
quart and a half or more.

Hi Patty,
Sorry I missed you at SnF. I was in the regular campground, not in the HBC.
I visited there on about Friday afternoon and there were over a dozen RV's
still there. Do not know where they were showering.
Are you going to Waco?

I think the important place to be careful is between the ribs and the skin.
There too much can cause dimensional issues. Once I had everything riveted,
I let the stuff fly. I figured a little extra weight in proseal on the
outside and along the inside of the tank over the rivet heads and seams was
cheap insurance against any leaks. Not pretty, but no one can see- and I had
no leaks. I still finished both tanks with just a little over a quart.

Actually, it may be self dampening if it leaks fluid, but I believe that it
is also self damping.

Could these all-metal nuts be part of the fire wall forward kit? Seems the
metal nuts would be better and after all the designer has called for their
use. Seems the nuts should come from Van's since it is their kit and
design. Please post the final out come on this. If we all need to buy
these nuts because Van's doesn't, it would be nice for all builders to know
up front and we could plan to purchase it in with one of our future small
parts order.

If you get stingy with the Pro-Seal you are much more likely to get leaks.
That has been my impression over the years. As stated elsewhere; put a heavy
fillet along the stiffeners and over the rivets inside. I used a generous
fillet around the fittings and outside the end ribs also. It is lots better
to cover it all the first time than to have to remove a tank to try and seal
from outside. I have seen this problem on anothers plane.

Fellow Listers:
The MN Wing's tech counselor Tom Berge has just put his RV-6 up for sale.
He is nearing completion of a brand new RV-7A so it is time to let go of
69TB. This is a tried and proven RV-6 having been flying since 1991. It is
IFR equipped and certified and actively flown IFR (equipped with a new S-Tec
model 20 autopilot). I'll vouch for its mechanical condition and
dependability (I have spent over 100 hours in this airplane riding with Tom
plus I got him his instrument rating in it a couple years ago).
If you are looking for a reliable IFR X-C RV, this is it. Here is a website
with all the details:
