Don-
Don't feel bad about looking at the Zenith CH701. I spent Friday at the
Splash-in, and the 701 on floats was FAR AND AWAY the quickest bird off the
water in the take-off contest and also won the spot landing contest. It
looked really controllable, and you're right- slow flight seemed real easy in
that bird, and real slow. I was impressed.

Current 701 plans are VERY complete, CAD generated, very readable, plus a
complete thorough color photo step by step assembly sequence. I've had no
problems whatever. Twice, unable to find some dimension or bit of information
and was directed to it on a specific drawing by Nick or Sebastian at the Zenair
factory. Out of the pages of parts (list) I have only found one item (4 AN
bolts) overlooked. they were promptly sent.

can't offer any subjective comments on the Zenith products, but for my slow
and low flying, Piper Cub is the platform. Maybe a Sport Trainer if you
really have to have experimental. If slow isn't slow enough, put VG's on it
and get slower!

its been a long time since I looked that one up, but it was either in the MS
standards or it was in the older AN standards, of which we have some at the
college. I also went down to the San Diego Aerospace museum a few years ago
to look some stuff up, and may have seen it then.
The gist is that the older type A fittings were soldered on joints and the
newer type B just needed to be flared to 37 degrees. I would expect that
this comes out of the SAE standards like so much else in airmotive does, but
I haven't researched this that far.

Thanks Wheeler, that's very interesting. If correct, the solder on primer
fittings I just ordered from ACS would then be the older "Type A", but I am
not aware of any "official" primer fittings that use 37 degree flare
connections. I almost made some from standard AN fittings, and may yet
decide to do so. Thanks again.

This (and the entire EFIS field) is a great topic. I looked at Blue
Mountain, Dynon, and PC Flight Systems at SnF. I spoke with the developers
of each system at some length (maybe 10 minutes per), and listened to other
conversations for at least as long.
Based on the answers I recieved, the Dynon would be my choice. I am aware
of problems with early systems from Blue Mountain, but "on the flightline"
at SnF, the story was that they had resolved the problems with their EFIS
one. How that relates to the Lite, I dunno. Also, the PC flight systems
folks indicated that their unit had a margin of +/- 5 degrees or so in each
axis, which put me off of that product.
I know folks who have used both the Blue Mountain Efis-lite, and the PC
Systems units. There have been *issues* with both systems. I don't know
anyone who has a Dynon, but I'm waiting until I hear a dozen very positive
reports, and then I'll seriously consider one.
One problem I find with "new toys" like EFIS systems is that if there is a
problem, it is often difficult for the proud new owner to face up to the
fact that s/he spent thousands of dollars on a gizmo that doesn't work quite
as advertised.
Anyone out there flying a Dynon, BMA Efis lite, or PC Flight System's
product wanna chime in?

Was the throttle wide open? What is the M.P. at idle. What was the Fuel
flow?
If the throttle was not wide open, ignore the MP and firewall it. If you
have a leak in the M.P. line it will read atmospheric pressure, not M.P.
you can confirm this by checking the MP at idle, it should be around 15" if
it is much higher than that you have a leak in the MP line.
Your fuel flow should be around 17 gph at wide open/Full rich. If it is not
pull it back till the fuel flow shows that.

Subject: | Fuel Pump Rebuild |
--> RV-List message posted by: Mark Phillips <ripsteel@edge.net>
Howdy list- got a couple of questions about the AC fuel pump on my 320,
I don't have it in hand, but believe the # is LW15472.... it does have
the stamped (not laminated) arm.
Are rebuild kits available for these? If so, where? I haven't seen any
listed anywhere and am wondering if some special tooling is required.
Another lister thought he had heard that these could be re-assembled to
reverse the ports from side to side. Not sure if this means rotating
the body or reversing the valves- (I haven't had mine apart yet pending
finding a kit, if possible)
Thanks!

I've had some really fun days with ultralights. (I had a Phantom and a
Flightstar)
Chasing coyotes, landing on beaches, breakfast at Hojos.
One trip I'll never forget started with an hour flight to some friends who
lived on a golf course in Socorro, NM. Four of us landed on the 12th
fairway, had a wonderful breakfast and then took off west toward the VLA
(very large array radio telescopes). Just diving into the Plains of San
Augustine, we came on a huge heard of at least 100 elk (or something like
elk) They took off running as tightly as a school of fish and must have
been maintaining at least 30 mph. We chased them around for 20 minutes.
No, they didn't stop running. We got bored chasing. Since one of the
pilot's father was a chief scientist at the VLA, we were invited to stop by
for a personal tour of the facility. So we landed in the parking lot, were
met by a couple technicians, and got a first class show. 2 hours later
we're airborne again, sort of. 60-70 miles never exceeding 30' agl. Landed
for fuel in a little town called Magdelena. No airport. Just a patch of
field behind a gas station. Taxied to the pumps, filled up. Walked across
the street for some of the best chimichangas on the planet. With bellies
and tanks full, a couple of the locals "watched for cars" and we blasted off
down Main Street. After popping over an 8-9000' ridge, we dove back into
the Rio Grande Valley and shot the river back to Albuquerque, again never
much more than 100' up.
There are some things you just can't do in an RV.

Martin,
I looked into doing something similar - in fact, you can get streamlined enclosures
from several companies that make R/C jet kits (use the vertical fin). In
the end, however, I decided that Commant blade antennas from eBay for $25 were
a better use of my time and money.
If you're still interested, you can find Jim's article online at http://www.rst-engr.com/kitplanes/KP9911/KP9911.htm ....
Thanks!

I know this has been talked about before. But has anyone come to the conclusion
that this occurs because of RF interferance?
I have a Sigtronics 400 intercom and a Mac grip with push to talk switch plus trim
switches. While I was trying to cure the problem of the ammeter going hay
wire when I keyed the mike, I had the intercome out of the panel and laying on
top of the spar. I just happen to have my hand on top of the intercom when I
keyed the mike and no problems occured with the ammeter. If I waved my hand near
the intercom no problems but as soon as I took my hand away the problem returned.
Any quesses as to what is going on.

How stupid do you have to be to chase Elk for twenty minutes. That's
called harassment of wildlife. Stresses them way to much. You should
loose your flying privileges.THINK!!!! DO NOT make the flying community

Hi John,
Are you using a Hall-Effect amp meter or a shunt type meter? If a shunt
meter is used the meter measures in 1/1000 of a volt and does not
require much stray RF to move it. I suspect that it is an RF problem.
Does this happen when you key the mike with the transmitter turned off?
If not, RF from the transceiver could be feeding to your intercom down
the mike or headphone leads. This stray RF could easily get rectified
by a loose ground and affect the sensitive meter. Your hand near the
intercom could shunt the RF to ground and prevent the interference. I
would check for proper shielding of the radio lead and good ground
connections. If this fails try RF bypass capacitors on the meter leads
and/or the radio leads.

The horizontally mounted NAV antenna needs to be mounted two feet away from
any other conductive horizontal surface. Just like the vertically mounted
COM antenna needs to be mounted two feet away from any other conductive
vertically surface.
I suggest you install a Sportcraft NAV antenna in the wingtip. I know you
didn't see a single one of those at Sun-N-Fun. :-)
You can contact Bob Archer (Sportcraft Antenna) at (310) 316-8796, or at

Hi Rhett,
You didn't mention who you talked to in Germany at MT-Propeller.
I would like to make sure I didn't misunderstand the engine restriction

Duh... That was typed in a hurry; should have been 'might be your problem.'
Constant speed props adjust pitch as the speed of the plane increases to
maintain load on the engine & angle of attack (thrust). My thought was
that if it's fixed pitch & allows the engine to turn it 2700 in near
static conditions, its angle of attack could drop to near zero & produce
minimal thrust after the initial acceleration when the plane has
attained climb airspeed.
My thought process was caused by the memory of an Eze builder who had
tremendous static thrust from his (small) auto conversion engine & FP
prop. When 1st flight was attempted, the plane wouldn't go fast enough
to climb out of ground effect & he died in the crash.
In retrospect, it was pointless to post the idea since the type of prop
wasn't specified, the rpm & fuel flow weren't verified & specified, etc.

True, it would have been much more helpful to have more information.
I was hoping the original poster would come back with more information
or a solution to the problem they had.

I am thinking of picking up a puddle-jumper until I can get my RV in the air.
Does anyone know of a way to check AD's on-line for a particular aircraft. I
am not an A&P or AI and don't have access to their records. I have the make,
model and serial number of the aircraft I am interested in. Thanks in advance

Since when is flying a privilege. People such as yourself who go around
spouting about flying being a privilege only reinforce the authoritarian

Flying's as much a right as gun ownership and my reply to your comments.
BTW, lighten up on the caffeine, chief! I think the guy was just trying to

Hi,
My name is Jeff and I am a future RV builder from NJ. I am a commercial
rated pilot building time and experience toward a professional aviation
career while I take distance-learning courses from Embry Riddle. I am
already chatting on the 8/8A list and am coming here for the broad spectrum.
My plans call for an RV-8 QB with some sort of alternative engine as a
major possibility. As I am 22 years old, I am going to build a budget fun
flyer as money allows and might be looking for a partner. To be honest the
plane will prob be like another girlfriend and I dont share my girlfriend
so thats prob not an option I would like. I am pretty set on the 8 with its
great fighter looks but like I said, its a budget project so if a cheaper
"lost interest" QB project comes along I would consider a 6 or 7. Right now
I am gathering information on the basics but am focusing on the engine
choice, as its the most expensive single part on the a/c. Right now I am on
the rotary turbo kick as I have been racing turbo cars for a few years now.
Sun n Fun sold me on the RV series and I am planning on taking the plunge
this summer.
Jeff

I spoke with a VERY knowledgeable source at SNF and he indicated that the
Blue Mountain EFIS One is not independent of the GPS signal for attitude.
That, if true, is a serious thing that they are not mentioning/denying.
Lancair apparently has confirmed that the unit will lose attitude reference
with loss of GPS signals. Not good.
Maybe not a problem for some installations, but certainly for some it is.

It is not his fault. It is a guy thing and can not be explained.
In fact I chased down a stray balloon over San Antonio this weekend.
Cruising at 2500 feet msl and 170 knots the first one went by before
any action could be taken. Going on the offensive a formation of several
more were spotted up ahead. Zeroed in on one that was slightly out
of position and downed him with the prop on the first pass. I quickly
exited the area before his friends could get my "N" number. ATC never
knew what happened.
I am so bad.

Hi Don,
I have never see a CH-701, however I did consider one before starting
the RV-9A.
Wife said no to the CH and she said yes to the RV. Do not ask me why.
http://www.ahyup.com/Decision.htm
If I were to build the the CH-701 I would use movable slats, not the
fixed ones.

I bought the video. It looks like it would do a loop in a barn.
