Thanks Bob, looks great! (17 chapters, 232 pages, plus a 22-page appendix)

Wheeler,
Great post.
One question though. I have the Safety Cell gismo, "amplified version".
http://www.airportshoppe.com/safetycell.html
With both my Nokia old phone, and Sprint new phone, the volume is very weak
to hear.
Let us know how your volume works out. Cause Ill bet it needs a boost in the
loud RV. I am not sure what is in the "amplified version" on the unit I have
cause there is not power to it. You might have to design in a power
amplifier. And if you do. I definitely want to know about it. I have spent
time and money messin with this problem. (my phone is my life at work. So
when I sneak out to the RV during the day, well... I need my phone to work
in the plane.)
First, I bought the PS Engineering 7000MS audio panel with the cellular
interface option. Turns out the panel requires a dial tone to operate. URGH!
Then I tried various adapters hand made before I found the impedance
mismatch. Then I just gave up and forked over the $160.00 adapter. My only
complaint is it needs a serious boosting. Hollor to us if you make an
amplifier version.

Here is a website that I just put up that has a small circuit one can use to
make a plugin connector to wire your cellphone audio/mic I/O into your
intercom.
Seems to work in my plane, but I haven't tested it in the air yet. (darned
rain clouds, there's been two of them so far this week)

I only read a few of these "RE: EAA Membership replies", so sorry if I am
missing something here. I will attempt to remain objective here.
As the President of one of the most successful EAA Chapters. Chapter 486 in
CNY.
(WWW.eaachapter486.com). I can tell you our membership and Board-Officers
have more than our share of complaints with EAA. Many of which we have been
vocal of back to them. EAA national has caused angst, we here have voiced
our concerns somewhat but as volunteers (little time or desire to chase these
issues) and paying customers (shouldn't they strive for perfection, we pay
their salaries, hey sounds like taxpayer complaints right?) seems we have
little recourse but to grin and bear it.
Starting last year with our 8th Annual RV Forum at KFZY. Those of you who
attended know exactly what was going down, it wasn't good and the 130 members
of EAA 486 and the 150+ other attendee's all weren't all that happy with EAA
then, as we almost had to cancel it the day it was starting. The mood was
hurt and the event went on with a EAA 486 Board vote, at I guess potentially
great risk to EAA 486 and its membership alone. It is 100% clear EAA
national is not organized in certain aspects, which we can't understand. I
can tell you to send things certified mail and demand replies, plus hard
copies of insurance coverage letters. But know EAA 486 feels that National
EAA will work harder to find the loop hole to drop you like a hot potato
thsan help you should the claim be required. Sorry but that is the feeling
here, read on.
This year our membership packet renewal demands, and those pesky insurance
issues appear to be limiting what would appear all EAA 486 activities to very
few and most none around anything to do with an airplane. Unless it is the
EAA young eagle flights....But there are more than that aged youth bracket
which we think ought be able to go for a ride in our planes...but don't even
think you can have a member offer a ride while on your premises to a
person...you may be liable.......if your chapter "brought them together".
Perhaps those chapters which tell little of their event details to EAA
National will find themselves lacking support (insurance coverage) when you
most need it. We at EAA 486 have a large investment to protect, and found
our honesty met head from National EAA with restrictions and little help
other than digging a deeper hole for "our predicament" and little concern
towards resolution.
Then there was my personal requests for support, EAA National not even
returning my many phone calls/messages regarding potential insurance loss
claim against the chapter. I finally gave up, but I guess I was risking it
all for 486. (Which thank gosh wasn't pursued against us).
All of the above sure takes the fun out of volunteering for such a fun group,
and as well leaves me wondering as an officer of a corporation my own
persnonal liability and is it worth it? October my 3 year personal term is
up for re-election. time will tell, as this summer's event schedule is
largest ever for EAA chapter 486 (see the web site).
And I'd add more after our anticipated August 2003 NYS Appellate verdict. If
you want to know more might I suggest you join EAA 486 for a measly $20 bucks
this year. Our court case has gone well in excess of most EAA annual
budgets, in fact I'll bet 5x's most, and our dollars are being well spent,
then you'd be abreast of the situation. Come visit us just once and I think
you will agree it is membership monies well spent.
Respectfully,

Ok guys, I have been getting conflicting information regarding the Vans capacitve
sending units and their compatability with the Vision micorsystems fuel managers.
Understandably, neither company will say that these systems work well together,
since they boths sell senders and neither wants the liability. However,
I have heard of people doing this with success. Sooooo, I would love to hear
from those of you who have tried this combo...what did you find? Thanks in advance.

I don't think Wheeler's design needs a boost, since instead of being fed
directly to a headset, it gets amplified by the intercom. Totally different
approach than the SafetyCell.

Scott,
after reviewing all of yesterdays list no one answered your question.
Cables shouldn't rub against anything other than fairleads, and then only if
they are not deflected more than 3 degrees.
Wires should be above fuel and oil lines.
All should be clamped/pullied/fairleaded every X inches depending on size.
AC 43.13-1b or 1a if you can still get it, has all of this very well laid
out in it. AKA the mechanics bible

Well,
I just got word that the D10 unit is in the mail. UPS tracking has it
sitting in Redmond for the last 24 hours.
God I hate the brown, I never have problems with any other shipper, and I
always have problems with the brown. Why would anyone ever want to be known
as the brown or associated with the brown. duh. On three occasions I've had
them ruin props, one time they lost a prop. God only knows what kind of G
forces this thing is going to be subjected to getting here. I hope they
didn't write delicate instrument on the outside. Talk about brown gorilla
temptations!!!
OK, why is mine in the mail and those with lower numbers aren't? I think
the s/n is related to when one ordered it, but, at least for the first 100
they are going by the internet list of who signed up first as indicating
interest. I know I signed up on that at least 2 years ago. But this
methodology is purely a guess on my part?
definately do not archive - wow that was really easy ;{)

I am a former president of EAA Chapter 75, a former Newsletter editor for
over 12 years, and the current Chair of the "Emergency Aircraft Repair", a
service project of Chapter 75 for over 40 years at the convention.
I can tell you I have an entirely different outlook about EAA. They have
been pleasant to deal with, responsive to our requests, eager to solve our
problems. Does everything go as we would like? Of course not. But our
Chapter didn't grow from about 35 members to over 110 overnight without EAA
help.
The EAA itself is subject to many outside influences especially in the field
of insurance. What can be insured reasonably one year may be impossible the
next. Is this the EAA's fault? I don't think so.
I don't know the details of your angst, but I do know that there are many
hard working concerned people working for you at EAA. They are more than
willing to go the extra mile to make things right. You have to let them
know of your concerns in a cool logical open dialog so they have a chance to
fix your problems.
Your accusations to an open forum will not get the job done. You have to
express them to the EAA directly. Then and only then will your complaint get
any positive action.

I am in the planning stage for my panel and need to make some decisions regarding
radios.
My dilemma is whether to install a NAV radio. How long is the VOR system going
to be around? GPS has taken over as the preferred navigational tool, and I recall
reading that the days of VOR navigation are numbered. I am considering
purchasing a NAV/COM radio (specifically the KX125) first of all for a good COM
radio, second to have a backup navigational tool, and third, to listen in to
the AWOS at select airports, mine included (MNM).
Anyone in the know regarding the fate of VOR??
Thanks

Subject: | EFIS, GRT and Windows etc ... |
--> RV-List message posted by: "James E. Clark" <james@nextupventures.com>
GlacierThere have been several posts about EFIS, GRT and Windows along with
whether GRT uses MS WIndows and if so whether this is a good idea.
First, I am considering using the "Horizon" from GRT.
**My** concern is far less about whether they have a version of Windows
somewhere in it and more about their ability to engineer and deliver a high
quality, functional system in the time-frame they are working. There are far
greater gremlins waiting along the road ahead. Let's hope they can conquer
them in a timely fashion.
Now, a few comments from a different perspective ...
First, as I recall my conversation with Greg at GRTand from looking at the
current instantiation of the system, there are two (actually three)
components to consider:
1. The actual AHRS and/or engine monitoring "subsystems" and
2. The display "subsytem".
Their engine monitoring "subsystem" has been around for a long time and is
not MS Windows based. The data it collects will get displayed in a "pretty"
fashion so to speak.
Their upcoming AHRS/air data computer "subsystem" uses their own
"proprietary/written inhouse" (I think) code and is not MS Windows. They
reportedly spent quite a bit of time over the last year or so working
specifically on this. It too will spew forth data that is to be presented in
"pretty" fashion for us to use as we fly along.
The **DISPLAY** subsystem uses (as I recall) a slimmed-down version of
Windows (probably Win-embedded). This subsystem will display the data from
the subsystems above *and* take in GPS sentences and display info about
where we are and where we are headed. It will have some database info stored
locally as well (airports, airspaces etc.).
It would not be appropriate to compare the experiences we have on out PCs
with that we might expect in a system like what is being built.
The problem is not all Windows ... it is one of complexity (due to nearly
unlimited options for the PC). Once you "close off" the system to nothing
but known components and use a version of "Windows" that is "fit for
purpose", you can actually achieve reliability and stability far beyond what
the average Windows user is likely to expect.
Probably the best consumer demonstation of this is your local ATM. Counts
out the cash reliably day after day in rain, snow (cold), sleet, hail or
sunshine (hot). Not saying they NEVER fail but the MTBF is pretty high.
It is great to see people like ControlVision (AnyWhereMap), Blue Mountain
and Dynon push the envelope for us. Each has had teething pains (if it was
so easy someone would done it a long time ago). Now GRT joins the fray with
yet another offering to help us get there safely. Let's wish them and their
approach the best.
I am hopeful that GRT (as those mentioned above have begun to) will also
deliver.

Are you going to fly IFR? If so, and depending on the airports you fly into
regularly, having a LOC/GS receiver is invaluable...to be able to fly ILS
approaches. An IFR GPS can get you into most airports, but ILS minimums are
gonna get you home much more reliably than VOR/GPS minimums.
If it wasn't for ILS approaches, there's no freakin' way I would have a
Nav/Com in my panel...just an IFR GPS/Comm. But I do rely on ILS approaches
enough to justify having the SL30 in addition to the GX60.
Just my 2 cents,

Hello W,
Thursday April 17, 03
I spoke to Paul Wednesday the 16th. Paul told me my unit would be sent
Thursday. He said that there where two units ahead of me. I am unsure as to
how they developed the numerical priority shipping list but Paul referred to
#s 38 and 39 as being the ones ahead of me.
I ordered the internal compass module. Because of email information on the
list I asked about it's configuration. To date, the directional heading
configuration procedure is not as yet completely firmed up but Paul felt
that it should be completely under control within a few weeks.
In an earlier contact with them they told me that the AOA heated pitot
project was put on hold (all hands to the fire so to speak) until production
of the D-10 units was well under way. Paul told me that they have now put
two people onto the pitot project again. He felt that it would be a couple
of months before the AOA heated pitot would see production.
This is fine with me as I still have enough wiring ,paint and upholstery
etc.to keep me going for at least that long.
As with the D-10 itself, I expect the pitot and heading procedure will in
all likelihood have some further delays. As long as it all ends up
operational in the next few months or so I'll be one happy dude.
---------------
Friday April 18, 03. Yesterday I received my notification that # 40 Dynon
EFIS D-10 was shipped.
It will take a while for the unit to get across the border and into my hands
so I expect to see it here late next week at the earliest.
It sounds like they are ramping up the production line somewhat.
I hope yours lands soft and safe.
Jim

I wouldn't discount VOR yet. I have heard from FAA employees, working on the "official"
deployment of the WAAS, that say the FAA hasn't even decided what the
fate of the VOR will be. They still want to wait and see how dependable the
WAAS is and how much they like it. I would suspect that it will still be years
down the road before VORs start going off line.

Well,
it may be possible that they are able to produce the product for this price
across the board. The other probability is that they may do this for the
first 500 to 1000 and write it off as marketing. The final thought is they
may be doing what Val does, offer it to the unwashed/uncertified for market
beta testing until certification, then, when TSO'd, they double the price.
all are valid marketing ploys...

Hi Brock,
If you are using Outlook Express and you click on the senders email address
that is in the senders email itself you will only send to that address.
If you click on the "reply" button up near the top left hand corner of the
page your email will default to (As in this case) rv-list@matronics.com
I assume that this will be somewhat the same in most any other email
software program.
I hope this helps,

Jeff;
Welcome to the world of aviation politics!
Seriously, though, the fate and phase out date of the N. American and
worldwide VOR network is at best indeterminate and will be driven by the
needs/wants/economics of many different user communities.
From the FAA's standpoint, the sooner the VORs disappear, the sooner the
costs of VOR real estate, maintenance, electrical power, and periodic flight
checks will all also disappear. Other gov't. departments have poured a lot
of money into GPS, enhancements, WAS, and LEAS on the promise it will all be
recouped when the VORs and Ills disappear and are waiting for that promise
to be kept.
From the standpoint of someone running a small commercial air transportation
operation, who is happy with the ways things are and who doesn't want to pay
$25,000 to reequip his light twin with a WAS grade GPS, and who simply
doesn't have the money, then VOR should stay around for as long as
possible. Even the major airlines (many of which are bankrupt or close to
it) have little interest in paying for GPS/WAS retrofits and crew
re-training unless there are real and tangible financial payoffs for them to
do so.
In short the $$$ savings will be realized by the FAA with lots of extra $$$
costs imposed on the users. Who has the political clout to get their way in
the US Congress is the question.
My guess is there will be enough inertia to keep VOR for a good 20 years or
more. If you figure a VOR would help the flying you plan to do, then go
ahead with a suitable VOR installation.
Often, the politics of implementing a new technology is as interesting as
the details of the technology itself. Read up on the Microwave Landing
System (MLS) that was going to replace ILS worldwide by the year 2000 but
fizzled badly instead.

FYI,
The FAA just installed a VOR at our airport during the last 2 months. It
just got certified this past month, and isn't even on the new charts yet.
Obviously, they are still putting new VORs out there, so it isn't going away
anytime soon...

Listars,
I can't seem to find my F-805E Rudder cable supports.
Can anyone tell me in which bag I can find them and what else is in that
bag?
I think I may be missing the entire bag.

Subject: | RV7 Wing Kit Leadtimes |
--> RV-List message posted by: "Dan Landry" <rv7@adv-sol.net>
I'm about to order the wing kit & noticed the lead times have changed from 8 to
12 weeks.
I expect to be finished the emp kit in a few weeks.
Is there anybody out there who is expecting delivery & isn't ready to build & would
like to trade delivery dates? You can email me off list.
Are the wing kit lead times accurate or are people getting delivery sooner than
quoted?
BTW, I received a demo ride @ SNF in the RV7 N137RV.
What a great ride and it really got me motivated.
Thanks.

Subject: | RVers in Orlando area? |
--> RV-List message posted by: Kevin Horton <khorto1537@rogers.com>
I'll be attending a conference in the Orlando, FL area from April 21
- 25. I'm not sure yet what my schedule will look like, but there is
a chance I'll have some free time in the evenings.
Are there any RV builders or flyers in the Orlando area who I could visit with?
I'll be staying near the I-4 and the Osceola Parkway, SE of Disney
World. I'll have a rental car.
Other than the Fantasy of Flight Museum, and NASA's museum at Cape
Canaveral, where should an aviation buff plan to visit in the Orlando
area?

Kevin:
We have about 20 builders right here in Orlando.
We have a meeting at the EAA chapter 74 on the third
tuesday of every month.
But, if you give us a call, I will tell you
how we can get together, and see some of the builders
and planes etc..
I am one of them, working on an RV6a.
Bert Send me an e-mail when you know exactly
dates you will be around here..

I go again:
Before I close the top foward skin, I would like to
test the static system.
I know there is Vacum test tool, I do not know the

Can some one tell me where I can find such gauge,,

Hello:
I am ready to connect the Alt. to the pitot tube, I have used the plastic tubes
for all other connections,
except of course the Vacumm system. Should I use
aluminum, on this, or plastic is ok?
Thanks for comments and suggestions.

Another thing is that the FAA won't buy off on an approach certified IFR
GPS installation unless there is a VOR receiver also installed and, in
most cases, an annunciator panel as well.

Subject: | RV-7 Landing Gear Question |
--> RV-List message posted by: N223RV@aol.com
I have a question I could not find in the manual for the RV-7. I installed
the engine mount to the firewall, and when I try to insert the landing gear
legs to the mount, it hits the lower corners of the side skin and firewall.
I assume I am to cut clearances around the gear, but wanted to make sure
before doing so. If this is the case, how much clearance should I have
around the gear legs?
Thanks for the help!

http://www.rvproject.com/20030409.html (see about halfway down)
Just cut away "as much as you need." Sorry not to be more specific, but I
made semi-circular (more or less) cutouts in the corner of the
firewall/belly skin flange area. It's an iterative process if you go
conservatively and take off a little at a time, check the fit, take off some
more, etc.
I used a 1/2" sanding drum in the Dremel and just whizzed right through
pretty quickly, and it's easy that way to keep the cutouts nice and round.
You may also find that you need to emery cloth the inside of the engine
mount where the landing gear legs insert, and use some grease to help coax
'em up in there if they're stubborn.
Also...when it comes time to drill the axle nut cotter pin holes in the
axles, don't follow the instructions and center-punch the axle. Instead,
use your 12" long #40 drill bit to drill a "dimple" in the axle. Center
punching can cause thread damage that can strip the axle nut if you're not
gentle enough (the irony being that if you're too gentle you can't see the
punch mark).
Have fun!

Any observations or advise welcome.

Except (so they say) for the new UPSAT CNX-80.
It in theory can be used as the primary instrument for navigation enroute

I went through the exact same exercise over 4 years ago. Funny how the more
things change, the more they stay the same! In my case I fly my plane IFR
which means a VOR/GS/LOC is still a must at the airports/approaches I fly.
But for VFR? Forget it. If you want backup, buy another GPS. If you're
really paranoid (jammed satellites, etc. -- it's been known to happen),
well, they DO still teach that map and compass stuff in pilot training
courses, don't they? :-)
For a COM, get the UPSAT SL40 -- their "standby monitor" function makes it
essentially two COMs in one.

Hi All,
VOR isn't just for IFR flying.
If you want to talk to Flight Following, or Flight Watch, they would like to
transmit to you on the NAV frequencies (so their transmitter is near you).
As I found out in Texas (no NAV receiver), the center can get pretty far
away.
Experiences may vary.
