Aviation PTT Switch for sale. It was removed from the package (I believe it was
made by Pilot Products) but has never been used.
I thought I'd post to RVers before posting on Ebay:

All of you who didn=B9t make it this year missed a great fly in. A
beautiful
grass field, with hangar and gas pump. The Baptist Ladies served a
tasty
barbecue lunch. It was great. Lots of entertainment too. Looked like
at
least 30 or 40 RVs and one Rocket. A collection of other planes all
gorgeous. Also a large turnout of builders.
Very well organized.
My thanks to the hosts, and especially Les.

--> RV-List message posted by: "Dean Pichon" <DeanPichon@msn.com>
Hi Mike,
I tried the same short-cut in my -4 when I mounted the fuel flow transducer. It
worked great for about 5 hours. The accuracy slowly deteriorated. After 10
hours of changing the "K" factor (up and down), it dawned on me that perhaps
the instructions specified the oreintation for a reason. It turns out, the geometry
of the transducer allows small amounts of air to get trapped in the flow
path if the wires are not facing "up" - causing erratic flow readings.
As soon as I reinstalled (re-oriented) the transducer, all my problems went away.
Last weekend, I pumped 19.8 gallons. The EI fuel gage indicated I had used
20.0. This is typical of the accuracy of the system I have experienced.
I bent a very simple bracket from 0.090 aluminum and mounted the transducer to
the firewall such that it is level in level flight. If you need more info, please
feel free to contact me directly.

Mike,
The jeweled bearings for the turbine in there are very sensitive and are
designed to be loaded in the manner prescribed, so do mount it as
instructed. In most installations you can easily fabricate a mount from a
piece of L-bracket.

Van could answer this with certainty, but in the RV-ator they have counseled
against cutting holes in this panel.
My eyeball engineering analysis says that it carries tension loads in flight
to hold the engine plumb and also carries tension due to engine thrust. On
the ground, it is in compression to take nosegear loads.

Subject: | Fuel tank access plate |
--> RV-List message posted by: "Ken Simmons" <ken@truckstop.com>
Sorry to bring this subject up again, but there are a couple of things I
didn't see addressed in the archives.
It seems the choices are gasket/fuelube, gasket/proseal, and proseal only as
well as the standard phillips head screws or hex head screws.
I understand the use for the hex head screws is to be able to remove the
access plate without removing the tank from the wing. This makes sense to
allow fixing a leak on the plate or to check/clean anything that might be
blocking the fuel pickup. The question here is can the access plate be
removed with the tank still attached if it has been prosealed? It seems like
a difficult task even with the tank removed from the wing.
Another question on using the fuelube is the possiblity of a leak from the
rear tooling hole on the inboard rib. If the access plate was prosealed this
could be covered. If only fuelube is used I could see a potential leak. The
plans don't call for sealing the access hole ring, and mine are already done
so that isn't an option.
The other question/concern I saw in the archives that I didn't see an answer
for was a possible corrosion problem between the stainless steal screws and
the alcad plate. It seems this would also be a concern when substituting the
torx screws for the phillips screws for fuel tank attachment to the wing.

I had exactly your experience (OK, mine was rebuilding a Triumph inline 6
cylinder) when I built my engine. The three "training materials" I had were
the Lycoming manual (reprint), the Skyranch Engineering manual, and a brief
videotape that it produced by a couple of assemblers from Mattituck.
The engines go together fairly easily, but I did have an AI buddy look over
my shoulders at a couple of key points.
For machine work, I used Aviation Specialties Services in Oklahoma. (800)

Yes, the plate can be removed while on the plane even if ProSealed -- I've
done it, and it really wasn't that big of a deal. See

Mike:
I recently mounted my fuel flow transducer after worrying over the same
issues you mention for months. The wires up orientation has to do with
proper venting of the transducer, at least that's what I am told by the
manufacturer. I fabricated a "T" bracket from two pieces of 0.063 bent into
90 deg. "L"s and then riveted together on one leg back to back. This bolts
to the firewall (two AN-3s top and bottom) with an 0.063 backing plate on the
inside. The transducer then sits on the forward facing leg of the "T". It's
solid and looks like it will work fine, but of course I'm many months away
from flying yet.

Greetings all. I've been an RV fan for a number of years and I'm thinking
heavily about making the move from a Mooney M20J into an RV. Preferably
an -8, while I'll consider a -7/-6 if She Who Must Be Obeyed is totally
opposed to the "sittin' in back" part.
I seem to recall noting that there's a number of ex-Mooney folks flying
RV's, some on this list. Can any of you offer advice/opinions on your
transition? What were you looking for in the RV, did you get it? What do
you miss from the Mooney that's no longer there?
I'm also seeking advice on the best way to make the transition. Of course,
there's build it, buy it, and the hybrid finish someone else's partial kit.
What's the biggest "gotcha" in terms of looking at the finishing someone
else's kit plan? What's the most common reason for failure for folks that
do that?
Thanks in Advance,
Jim Murphy

P.S. If there are any folks in the Nashua, NH area (or folks that wouldn't
mind a free lunch for flying up to Nashua) that would let me wife climb in
the back seat of an RV-8 so she can see what it's like, please let me know
privately at jsm@murphymotorsports.com.

The Navaid needs a left/right input that would normally go to a Nav
indicator. I think the GNC 300XL should be able to drive the Navaid.
The smart coupler is needed with handheld GPS units that aren't built
to drive Nav indicators.
I can't help you on the altitude question.

something like....( in gentle tones)...forget it, you can't do it
etc...because if that is all it takes to dissuade you from going after a
dream, then perhaps you don't really want it that bad....
Like another Rver on this list, I was always told that I couldn't do
such and such..would never make it, or didn't deserve it, etc., and that
only threw gas on the fire for me to prove them wrong..
Actually, the only real obstacle I had was ..tadaaa....no money......
I was once asked to take a horse to the starting gate that was barred from
racing until he behaved...nobody would do it and I was told he would flip
and go nuts, and part of that was true, and it was scary as hell, but I did
it..for me...to see if I could fight down the fear..or fail...
but when he got rolling, it was like a living P51 in my hands..poetry in
motion and he and I as one fairly flying in the wind.....the risk this time
was worth it ..he was beautiful and a bit nuts..something like my first girl
friend...but I grew up a bit that day.
When I finished the RV after years of work and no flying, and
certainly nothing before like an RV, I was a bit scared, and tried not to
show it, but darned if I wasn't going to the gate with this one since I did
all the work on it......I got a checkout, and then.......
At least I wasn't told I could not do this, I climbed aboard, picked up the
reins, the bell went, and we were off and climbing and way too busy to look
back or register what I was feeling..
Man, the cumulous look so white and puffy and make my paint reflect the
bright metallic off the canopy......racing along the edge of it with the bit
in her teeth, the needles of the gauges climbing still, I am along the edge
of the Pacific in no time..
My God, that is a lot of water out there and it goes on and on until you
can't see the end of it....
Funny, but fear never seemed to play a part in any of it once we ran off
together, not even when it came time to go back to the barn ....
First landings are very often the best ones....try to do that again....
The nicest lyric after the engine's sweet song is the notes of the chirp as
first one wheel kisses the tarmac and the other follows right now and I can
hear a lot better when the throttle is back.
Back to the barn to cool out and I don't mind walking around for a half hour
while she cools in her beautiful color and makes soft ticking sounds.....I
never tire of it, and I left my fear aloft somewhere..
The big surprise in my student flying days with the 140 was there
was no sensation of blazing speed.
That only happened when close to the grass for takeoff or
landing.....followed of course by my mouth and driving style after a
lesson...so the girl friend claimed....
An old Air Force instructor short on the bottle and long on valor showed me
what flying low and fast and canyon running was all about and I was
mesmerized by flying.
I never saw a riverbank twist as fast as a Diamondback like that before and
it was so grand..
I just wanted to fly and I was the only one in my family so
inclined.
Why didn't I take up the piano or become an accountant or something sensible
like that ?
Because then, I would never know what I was made of, even if the only one
who knows or cares is the one who looks back at this old dog in the mirror
....
I can go back to my books and pictures now and read of Corsairs and such and
say to the faces seen and unseen....." I can do that "......
And so can the young fellow who wonders the same..regardless of the answers
he gets.....

There was an earlier thread about tach generators, and one of the
branches was about the clearance between the B&C SD-8 alternator and
where a tach generator would mount. I took a few pictures of my SD-8
installation and posted them on my web site, in case anyone is
interested.

There is a good chance the above link will get wrapped into two lines
by the wonders of e-mail. If so, you need to cut and paste to
reassemble it or it won't work.

Subject: | Trutrak Altrak Alt. Hold Pirep |
tests=AWL,NO_REAL_NAME,USER_IN_WHITELIST
version=2.53
--> RV-List message posted by: mstewart@qa.butler.com
After reading the pirep report last week I decided it was long overdue,
altitude hold was in my future.
I fly alot, 800 hours in the past year and one half. And if there is any
down side to the flying characterists of the RV, it is the sensitivity in
pitch at cruise. I find near 80% of my time IFR is spent managing altitude.
Unacceptable I decided early on. But it was not until the Altrak unit came
into play that something was affordable enough for me to take the plunge. I
tried and tried for 2 years to get Navaid to get into the altitude hold
market. I have thuroughly enjoyed the wing unit. But no joy on alt. hold. So
off I went to purchase the Altrak unit. Overnighted to my home, installed
next day.
Installation was pretty easy, 8 hours soup to nuts. I have flown it 4 hours.
Thinks I like..
1) Single button on the panel, push it in, green light, and your on. Nice
2) Price/Value is good, especially for me. I fly alot.
3) High quality product, as is seen and felt in playing with the unit
4) hold alt in smooth air +-10ft, lt-mod turb +-30 feet
5) turns <20deg +-20 feet, turns <45deg, +-50 feet, turns <45deg +-80feet
6) It is very smooth. I was concerned about feeling the unit operate in my
butt, but I can't. I am very happy with that.
7) My 3 hours flying it today, I have so much time on my hands now, I need
inflight entertainment, and a coffee maker to keep me awake. It has freed up
way more time for other duties, much more than I hopped it would.
Things I did not like...
1) Servo is heavy. I do not have a scale to weigh it, but Ill bet it is 3
times the weight of the NavAid servo in my wing. No doubt this servo is of
higher quality, but damn.... its heavy. I was not happy sticking that weight
in my tailcone back there. Every time I picked it up, my face would crincle
in disgust. I seriously considered putting it back in the box and returning
it for that reason alone. But I didn't. And I am glad I didn't return it.
2) I get a noise in my headset, through my com, from the servo. Sounds like
a high pitched morris code. Faint but irritating. Paperwork said not to
bother with shielding wire, so I didn't. But I have noise and now Im going
to have to rip the plane apart again and put shielded wire from the tailcone
to the cockpit. ARGH!!
Ill post some pics and detailed write up on my website in a few days.

Subject: | Re : does top front panel carry load? |
--> RV-List message posted by: "Martin Hone" <martin.hone@tradergroup.com.au>
Hi Kim,
I was faced with the same question - how the hell am I going to access all those
items behind the panel once the top skin is permanently in place ?
So I went with a 8 X 10 access panel in front of the windscreen and a hinged instrument
panel.
Works great. Others, such as Pat Hatch have made cut-outs in the top skin and I
haven't heard of it causing any problems, but it sure makes things easier. I
doubt that you would need any more than two cut-outs, and maybe just one, well-placed,
will be sufficient.
Cheers

The Navaid accepts +150mv left and +150mv right data. The smart coupler
takes NMEA 0183 cross track error data and converts it into the previously
mention signals which are then fed into the Navaid.
Mine has the coupler internal and it is wired with a DPDT switch to select
NMEA 0183 data from the GPS S/C or L/R data from the VOR/LOC.
The data from the GPS seems to cause it to be more stable then the VOR/LOC.
The VOR/LOC wanders slightly, whereas the GPS only oscillates when it has to
make a course turn of more than about 30degs.
I have never really proven if the VOR/LOC wander is from the Navaid or the
VAL INS422, but the needle display from the 422 is very sensitive, so I'm
inclined to believe that is what is causing the over controlling. (since
we're all being so sensitive here these days, I want to be really clear in
pointing out that I have no hard sceintific proof that its the 422 vs the
Navaid. In fact all comments posted in this post are the mindless opinion of
another ex-auto-mechanic with severe neurophysiological damage due to
repetitive exposure to meythaltertiarybutyalether. By the way what's up with
the deal about everybody being ex auto-mechanics who have only built Ford
2.0 H2ADs) ;{)
Second flight of the Dynon D-10 was as much fun as the first one. Did some
work to plot out the deviations between the unit's alt readings and the
steam gauge alt readings. There is some deviation (30-60ft)which doesn't
bother me, but the amount of difference does change a little from airport to
airport which rules out static error. Other than that it seems to work still
very well.
Next flight I think I will try to seriously plot out both IAS and ALT for
the D-10 and the steam gauges at 10 kts increments to see if there's a
specific arc of deviation on either. The hard part about this is trying to
do anything serious while flying an RV. I cannot be serious and grin at the
same time, and I cannot fly an RV and not grin the whole damm flight.
I will say that I used the Dynon this time to reference my touch down
attitude and it plopped on all three perfectly.

I received my Dynon EFIS D-10 on Friday.
I have been going all over the place in this area showing it to anybody and everybody
that I could.
I appear to have all the symptoms of a serious case of 'The boy with a new toy
syndrome'.
It's fun watching mouths drop. People are amazed when they see how this unit performs.
You can hear their gyroscopes whiring down as they contemplate the impact
this kind of technology is now begining to have.
At a couple of pilots meetings that I have attended over the weekend small crowds
formed each time I turned it on.
This unit is worth every penny. I can hardly wait to get airborne with it.
