The irony was probably a bit obscure. My reaction to some of the recent

Thanks for the leads, looks like I'll be ordering a copy from NASA.

I have taken off immediately behind (maybe 100 feet) a FP 180 -6 in my
180 CS 6A, and have been airborne before the lead plane. One must
throttle back significantly to avoid overtaking the lead plane.
However, once we are at about 120 kias, we are very equal during the
climb at full throttle (I believe the other plane has a metal
Sensenich). At cruise, flying side by side, he is burning about 9 and I
7.5 gph. I would suspect at least half, if not 2/3s, of this difference
is my ability to lean past peak (I have FI), while the other half is the
prop. I don't know the drag difference between a faired nose gear and an
unfaired tail wheel, another difference.
Another advantage the CS has that hasn't been mentioned is cruise noise.
2300 rpm is much quieter than 2600, startling so.
I agree, if one must, trade off things that are upgradeable in the
future to get a CS, you won't regret it.

Dismissing the difference in cost, is there noticeable performance advantage
for one or the other? And I understand the weight cg difference.

Bryan: I concur with pretty much your other list responders have said.
Dick Sipp and I have 160hp RV-4's, his with a Hartzell CS and mine with a
Sensenich metal 81" pitch. In a racehorse start and climb to some middling
altitude, say 8000' with max power all the way, I can't keep him in sight.
I could probably not stay in the same county with him. Top speeds will
differ only slightly and that depends on how well the FP matches the
airframe. The CS gives better altitude performance without question.

Fast glass?? whatever. Find a glass plane that has a similar weight, same
HP,
same landing speed
(I'd like to see that one) and I don't think you will notice a very big
difference
in cruise speed.
Then there is the price.
I still get tickled when I think about the graffiti that I saw on the
inside of a Sh_ t Shack at Sun N Fun-
Someone has scribed " And to think that I could have been a Glasair..."
Pilots have such a great sense of humor.
I call them "Scratch and Sniffs" because you itch while you build them and
they smell bad while curing. I admire those who undertake building glass
planes. I've seen only one crummy looking glass plane (The White Lightning
factory demonstrator...dying a slow death on the ramp in the sun), but I've
seen many RV's that looked like pigs with lipstick. Metal is so
unforgiving.

Yeah, but did you know that a flea can jump 4000 (?) times its body

Hey - serously. I learned to fly in one too! Took me a little over 40 hrs
though. ;) Wonderful planes, excellent trainers. have almost 300 hrs
dual given in -150's to -182's and enjoyed *almost* every minute of it.
But I still get a great big kick out of blowing their doors off with my
little Ramp Flea!! ha!! "how much that 230-hp, -182 cost you...?" as I'm
blowing by with my 160-hp, garage built magic carpet. Two different

$46!!!!!!
High-brightness LEDs cost less than $2. You would not need more
than one of the latest ones they make. Add a ~ 600 ohm 1/4 watt resistor
for a few pennies to hold the current at somewhere near 20 mA and you are
done.
You can get the high-brightness LED (I like red) at:
You might want to get a selection of viewing angles to see what
works best for your application.

As a proud owner of this very same T-shirt (most coveted!), I also wish
Van's still offered them! Mine is getting kinda funky...BBQ stains, sweat,
blood, proseal, the typical "RV owner's cocktail".
I make it a point to wear mine wherever plastic plane people tend to
congregate: portajohns, dermatologist offices, the skin care aisle at
Walgreens, toxic waste reclamation dump, etc.

Subject: | First Flight N46FC |
--> RV-List message posted by: JusCash@aol.com
I am proud to report that RV6 N46FC had it's first flight on Wednesday, May
7, 2003. After takeoff I orbited the airport to feel out the airplane and
check the engine instruments. All instruments were in the green, the
airplane felt great so I headed to the San Joaquin Valley for flight test.
I did my transition training with Mike Seager in a 160HP, fixed pitch, RV6.
I have to tell you, on takeoff, there was a big difference in performance
between it and my 180HP constant speed RV6. As soon as I applied power the
tail was up and I was flying. I was prepared for the increased performance
but it was still startling to feel such acceleration.
During the flight I did all of the basic maneuvers slow flight, stalls, steep
turns, etc., and found no problems. When trimmed in level flight the
airplane flies hands off.
I did several wheel and three point landings they were none events. The
airplane handled beautifully.
Post flight inspection revealed a slight oil leak on the back of the engine,
a loose fitting. That was all!
After six years and five months it was REALLY, REALLY worth it. Now it seems
like yesterday that I picked up Quick Build # 60075 from Van's old location
in No. Plains, Oregon. I believe mine was the first RV6 Tip Up.
To all of you still building don't get discouraged it really is worth the
effort. I often thought that building this airplane would be one of the
greatest achievements of my life. I now know that it is.

I learned what little I know about CS prop operations while getting a high
performance endorsement. Well actually it was a tailwheel endorsement but
the plane (Maule M5) had a 235HP engine (Insert Tim Taylor grunt here) so he
gave me both. If you really have a 200HP engine you'll have to have a high
performance endorsement anyway.

The VanGuard Insurance program would definetely be less expensive than
AVEMCO, and the coverages are much better.
I don't know what your flight times are like or if you've had any losses,
but here is a general idea for you:
100K value and 1 million limited to 100,000 per passenger for a 400 hour
pilot with just a checkout from a CFI in RV's would be around $2300. And
that'd go down at 500 hours total time, and there would be some make and
model discounts available as you build time as well.
The VanGuard Program's liability coverage is better than AVEMCO's per person
limits because AVEMCO's coverage would limit someones recovery under the
policy to 100,000 whether inside or outside the plane... And AVEMCO further
limits recovery under the policy if the person injured is a family member of
yours to 25% (25,000 in this case).
You could accrue some automatic discounts if you insure the aircraft while
it's under construction as well which would lower the quote for the flyable
coverages up to 10%.
We insure over 1000 RV's thru the program. You'll likely hear from many
others on the list that have coverage thru us. www.nationair.com

Got the MP gage but how can you get a table for a engine that has 20 more
HP the what it came from the factory with? If it was not for that a table
is fairly easy to get.

I can't decide whether it is a good idea or not to do this, but I will
give you an approximate. Bear in mind a lot goes into it other than the
facts you gave, like pilot qualifications.
I have an RV-6 insured for $1,000,000 each occurrence liability, $100,000
each passenger, $1,000 medical each passenger. Comprehensive $70,000
hull value.
I have around 2,900 hours and 1,300 tailwheel.
My premium is around 1/4 of what you mentioned. Compared to my auto
insurance, that seems reasonable to me. I would shop around. My agent
is Scott Smith.

I had to grind off the top of my yoke (directly above where the set pushes

I can send you a picture of the yoke if you like.

Keep in mind that the company Scott Smith uses (which I also have
available... and he does NOT have the VanGuard Program rates available) is
AIG, and they have restrictions they place on a newly completed aircraft
during the flyoff period (10% deductibles and test pilots who are not owners
are not covered for bodily injury). They also typically are not as
competitive as the program especially for low time pilots.
Normally, with really high time pilots with LOTS of time in RV's (like
yourself) AIG's premiums run about the same as the programs.
I use AIG for lots of different types of aircraft... they're a great company
(and I'm their 3rd largest broker) they just aren't as competitive as the
program on RV's.

While on the subject of Cessna bashing, I have a 1946 Cessna 140 for sale. And
contrary to popular belief, they are a joy to fly. It's not an RV, but it's
a different mission as well!
This would make a great tailwheel trainer and something to beat the flying bug
while building your RV. 100 MPH at 5 GPH.
Listed at $20,000 will take $18,000. Needs an annual, but runs great.

Just a suggestion.... don't throw premium numbers around without informing
people of the type of plane (TW vs. Trike can make a big difference), the
value of the plane (your 'rate' that your charged gets multiplied by that
value and can differ vastly) and your hours (total, TW if its not a
nosedragger, and RV time)
Without those things (at least) your merely going to confuse yourself and
others.

I asked Ken and got permission from him to explain a bit about the
differences (thanks Ken).
His is a TW aircraft... not a trike like in the example... so his rate is a
bit higher.
His value is higher than in the example too. The rate you're assigned due
to your pilot experience gets multiplied by your value. So, while Ken is
higher time than in the example, his rate is a tad higher (because it's TW)
and it's being multiplied by $120,000 not $100,000.
Those things can vastly affect the premium that's charged.

Our EAA Chapter (168 in Dallas) plans to fly in there for lunch. We have
quite a few RVs and others as well. The plan is to meet around 11 am then
go to the restaurant by the field.
I'll be putting shop time in on my RV-8, so I won't be there, but others
will (weather permitting).

I wonder if there are enough people on the list who would want a T-Shirt or

Maybe someone knows a vendor who could make them up? I would buy at

Phil,
I don't think your statement is correct (off by 1+ hp).
In excess of 200hp (but not right at 200hp) requires a high performance
endorsement, I believe.
And to Scott,
Read about the operation on a constant speed prop, and the learning curve is
instantaneous. There is really nothing to it, once you understand the
principles of operation of a CS! During my flight training I transitioned
from C-150's & C-172's to a C172 with a 180hp/CS Combo in it! Wow to
increase in climb and acceleration, and the mental transition took only
minutes!
God Luck!

Scott,
What mods does the engine have?
Was it dynoed, or is the 200 hp an educated guess? If it was dynoed,
can they give you any data on hp vs rpm? If it was dynoed, I assume
the 200 hp value is corrected to some sort of standard conditions -
can you confirm that they use sea level and 15 deg C (59 deg F)?

You only need the high perf endorsement if it's *over* 200hp (at least last
time I checked). And it's a complex endorsement that you need for the C/S
prop.

One way to estimate percent power is to carefully lean to peak, and look
at fuel burn. This assumes some things, but is reasonably close. Your
fuel burn should be something around .45 pounds/hour/horsepower. So, a
200 hp engine running at 75% would be 150 hp. That works out to be
about 150*.45=68 pounds fuel, or about 11 gal/hr. I probably have the
.45 a little off, but it obviously depends on many factors.

Subject: | jABIRU 8 CYLINDER ENGINE. |
--> RV-List message posted by: "MICK MULLER" <MULLERPHARM@bigpond.com>
jabiru Australia have released their new 8 cylinder 5.1 litre (ok liter for our
American brethren) for production`.
They are currently in the process of building a firewall forward package for RV,
specifically using the RV6, but
suggesting that the package will cater for the RV7, 8 and 9. Not being an expert
in engines, I presume it will be longer
than say a lycoming9because of extra cylinders). What affect might this longer
nose have on performance - ie. weight and balance and the attitude in straight
and level flight.
Thanks,
Mick Muller (RV9a builder in Oz)

You have them converted on-site, during the show? Cool. How much?

Doh, that's right! I don't know why I always lump RVs into the same
category as retracts...hm...maybe because they're as fast without needing to
retract. 8

I recall information on the Jabiru website saying that the engine was
extremely close in dimensions to the O-360 series. There are 8 cylinders
instead of 4, but they are smaller cylinders to start with.
Currently the Jabiru engine is running neck-and-neck with a used Lycoming
for my engine choice. In a couple of years when I have to make the
decision, i'm hoping there'll be a few Jabiru's flying that will be able to
provide some useful performance/reliability data...

This rough guide is good enough. For your 200hp FI engine at full power you
should be seeing right around 17gph on the fuel flow. For 75% cruise and
below leaned to peak EGT a BSFC of 0.42lb/hp/hr is pretty much the limit, so
you may see slightly higher fuel flow numbers than listed for these power
settings. If you are seeing lower gph, then your engine doesn't make 200hp.
MP inHg + (rpm/100) =48 75%pwr 10.5gph
MP inHg + (rpm/100) =46.5 70%pwr 9.8gph
MP inHg + (rpm/100) =45 65%pwr 9.1gph
MP inHg + (rpm/100) =43.5 60%pwr 8.4gph
MP inHg + (rpm/100) =42 55%pwr 7.7gph

Funny. You could just buy a Van's T shirt.
I bought one of Van's T shirts, and it came with "Friends don't let Friends
fly plastic airplanes" on the back.

Jim,
When did you buy it? I tried to buy that shirt a few years ago, when it
was still on their (old) website, and was told that they didn't have
them anymore. And they are not on their website now. If anyone out
there makes them, I'll take a couple.
