For those interested. Pilotportal.com has a map light that fits on your headset
and you can turn it off and on with your tongue. It's small and the batteries
are in a small pouch on the side of your headset. The 4 light array fits on the
bottom of your mike boom. Wherever you turn your head, that's where the light
is. Works great. I use it as a backup system.

'Listers -- although this will be of particular interest to RVers in Western
Canada and the Northwestern US, I'm hoping that all RVers can take an interest
in the pending closure of the Nelson, BC airport. Nelson is a *great* RV
destination, a unique location, right on the lake, and within walking distance
of great accommodation and restaurants, in the heart of beautiful southeastern
British Columbia.
The web site http://flynorth.com/nelson.html contains more information and a
picture of this great airport. If you can take a few minutes to write an
email supporting the continued operation of the airport in the future, it
would be much appreciated by all concerned. If can be shown that the airport
has the potential to draw visitors to the area, along with all the attendant
benefits, I'm sure it will make a difference.

Use the mercury FBO. They are pretty good. Also the Millionaire FBO is good

I was really surprised, but when I dropped my headset off the guy
suggested that they _might_ have time to do the conversion in time
for me to pick them up before I left. I had only wanted to try and
save a little on shipping ... but never expected that kind of fast
service. :) I dropped them off the second day of the show, they
ended up having time to do the conversion (I'm guessing at their
hotel), and I picked them up that next Sunday. Fantastic service.
Their website (http://www.headsetsinc.com) has details on their pricing
but what I went for was the basic conversion with the gel earseals ($189)
the replacement 3-plug cable ($19), and I had them do the install ($50).
It came to around $260. For folks close to building, they have a panel
mount power supply which replaces the little plastic battery box. When
I'm working on my panel (which will be sometime in the next decade ..
as I'm the slowest builder you ever met) I'll pick one up and that will
make for a very nice installation (IMHO).
One note on the cable ... you don't have to get it but the alternative
is to drill a small hole in one earcup for the cable to the battery
box. The replacement cable is a much neater installation. I also had
them do the install because .. frankly .. I have enough projects to
deal with and didn't want to take on another. A case of trading some
money for time, and your tradeoffs may be (probably are!) different.
I probably could have found a used ANR headset on eBay for the same
money, but I _love_ my old Dave Clarks and didn't want to part with
'em. I upgraded only one headset to make sure I liked the conversion,
but I'm seriously considering converting the other one so passengers
can have the same level of luxury and hearing protection. And before
you knock me spending money on passengers .... realize that my most
regular passengers are my wife (who is supportive of my building and
tool habit, and helps me rivet) and my kids (whose hearing problems
*I* will have to pay for if they crop up, and who both help with the
work on the plane as well).

Now I have a question: I looked all over the archives and couldn't find
anyone who remembers how to rivet the trim tab and hinge. I followed
(blindly?) the instructions and riveted the bottom flange, but left the
top clecoed. Now it's time to rivet that sucker, and I cannot figure

Once again, thanks to the list for the great tips on wheel landings in the
Luscombe. I was given my endorsement yesterday evening. Here's how it
went:
My instructor was still having a difficult time keeping me from flaring and
ending up in a sort of "hybrid" 3-point/ wheel landing. After three
approaches yesterday, he made me promise that I would not pull the stick
aft no matter how bad things looked...just keep alignment and no drift. In
exchange for my promise not to flare, he promised that he would save us if
it got nasty. (Famous last words) All the way down on short final, he
kept repeating "do not flare, do not flare...) Whammo! Stick forward, but
slight tail-bob followed up by a slight hop which I immediately caught with
a little forward stick upon the 2nd landing contact. Not pretty at all.
At this point he is congratulating me on breaking through the barrier by
doing exactly what he requested which was a no- flare landing. (One that
would have damaged a tricycle gear, no doubt) He then explained that what
he had told me to do was totally incorrect, but that he wanted to
demonstrate that even if I botched it, recovery was no big deal. We then
got serious and put a subtle flare in the remaining landings since he had
broken me of my ground-shyness. What a great time the last two weeks have
been! That sweet 'ole Luscombe put the fun back into my flying.

PS- We also almost witnessed a Cessna 182 groundloop on takeoff. With
four people on board, they started their takeoff roll with the yoke aft.
The tail dropped to the ground within the first 50' of the roll. It
dragged down the runway with the tail occasionally scraping, and as it got
light, a slight gust hit it and they were all over the runway swerving
before it was brought under control. They must have had a bag of rocks in
the luggage compartment.

Yes, the RV-8 does have a listed Aerobatic gross weight of either 1550lb or 1600lb
depending on which wings you have. The later match hole pre-punched wing
is the 1600lb and is the dame as the wing used on the RV-7. The gross weight
on the RV-8 is listed at 1800lb. I think the big difference between the RV-4
and the RV-8 is with a light RV-8 you can do aerobatics with a passenger. In
my case at 1031 empty I can fly aerobatic with 1/2 fuel and a 200lb passenger
and still be below Van's published numbers.

the old iron-ons of years gone past. These are still second in quality to a
silk-screen, but close. With silk-screening you pay extra for every colour,
but with this you can have any colour you can print.
I know you have a computer and very likely have a printer, so if you
can build a plane, you should be able to do this in about an hour.

Its obvious its getting fuel from some where and also has a carbon build or
something hot enough to ignite the mixture. This can also lead to/cause

I would guess that you have the "sinking Float" problem or the float is set
too high. If you bought a used engine, still might have the old style
plastic float. There is a SAIB #NM-02-47 on this very problem. Check it
out.

Here is my initial attempt at waving the checkerboard. We used the computer
program of a sign making client of mine to scale the art and put the wave
it. We then cut the vinyl and removed the parts we didn't want. This is
vinyl. For those wanting to paint a checkerboard, you local sign shop is
the way to go. The other side of this rudder will be painted using a mirror
image of this side but done in vinyl masking material. This material is low
tack but does not allow paint to bleed. It is very easy to remove while the
paint is still tacky. The heck with fine line paint masking tape, plus you
can do anything you want with the design.
This is waaaayy too much fun!!

This is not detonation. When you shut off the ignition and an engine
continues to run, this is called "Dieseling." Detonation is when the air
fuel mixture explodes instead of burns and causes extremely high cylinder
pressures and temperatures. Detonation is caused by combinations of poor
fuel, bad timing, overheated cylinders, excessive boost, or too high of
compression ratio.
If you shut off your airplane with the mixture and it continues to run, you
have a problem in your carb/fuel injection system. Dieseling is cause by
shutting down when the engine is too hot. You might have some carbon
deposits or excessively hot cylinders that are lighting off the air/fuel
charge in the cylinder, but I would bet on the carb problem.
Did you shut it off with the mixture?

The only disclaimer, here, would be if you had the "cruise"-type
Hartzell CS prop that Vans sells with the 4" prop extension (the
standard cowl is made to fit this prop/extension). Hartzell would
really, really like you to limit your aerobatic flapping about to 4 g
with this extension. Given that the gross aerobatic weight is based on
6g, you can increase the weight proportionately if you strictly keep to
the 4g limit.

Having owned a 172M since new (1975 model) One must recognise that the
172 does EXACTLY the mission it was designed for. It hauls up to four
people at tolerable speed, is quite easy to fly, not at all "twitchy" and is
a totally reliable airframe.
I owned this 172 jointly with my brother who just bought out my half as
the 6A is nearing completion. We did all our own maintanence and found it
rather easy to work on. Did the oil pump gear & the venturi change plus mag
updates and that's about it. After 1800 hrs over 28 years it still goes 40
hrs per qt. of oil.
Climb could be a bit liesurely at gross wt. on warm days but always
adequate. Not bad for an 0-320 hauling four people on auto gas yet! Cruise
has averaged 6.0 gals/hr for many years. Not bad, it is intended to offer
FLYING not ADVENTURE!

Hey Gang,
The reason "Friends don't let friends fly Plastic Airplanes" shirt site
disappeared for a time is a disappointing story to tell.
I can honestly say that every single person I have met that is either
building or flying an RV are genuine, honest likeable folks.
That is until today. On a trip to Key West this year, 4 of us RV guys were
able to take a spectacular formation photo. I turns out the shot was so
good, it won Avweb's photo of the week.
Last night a guy by the name of Mitchell Faatz of CA, (mitch@netscape.com)
building a 6A decided that with this photo, he could make a buck or 2. So he
opened a site on cafepress.com.
Well, I don't mind at all sharing our travel experiences with others. But I
do mind other folks trying to make a buck off someone else's back.
So this morning after finding out about the tee-shirt site with my photo on
the back, I had it shut down due to copyright violations and just plain
irresponsible actions on the part of Mr. Faatz. His response to this was
"Somebody apparently didn't like the image I was using". I mean really,
great idea, but how about a phone call with the offer of a couple of shirts
for the use of a photo?
Some may say, what's the big deal. That photo didn't cost you a thing Paul ?
Well, that photo represented 4 peoples hard work and dedication to a
fantastic hobby. A total of about 13 years of build time. roughly
$260,000.00 in capital investment, not to mention the gas to fly for the
photo op.
So please, in the future, if one of the "flying" guys provides the RV
community with a beautiful shot from the air, remember, they did it for your
motivation. This type of activity is what makes the RV community so great! I
know a guy that provided all of us with this type motivation while I was
building. Not only did his inspiration help me to complete the project, I
believe it saved a life in the process of someone very special to me.

It probably isn't dieseling or heat related either, remember that the ignition
is still on when shutting down so all it takes is fuel to make it run. Something
is leaking fuel or not shutting off completely. This is a common problem on the
AFP injection system and is why the purge valve is recommended. I had this same
problem on my -6, O360/AFP and it finally got so bad that I had to shut it down
by turning off the fuel or the mags but the purge valve fixed it completely.
I also can't see how a bad float in the carb could be the cause since the
mixture control should shut the fuel off completely regardless of the float
position.
Bottom line is that it's getting fuel from somewhere.

Here we go. While the below is a lovely sorrowful tale, it's came about
a little differently on my side, and not so cold and calculated as is
made to appear below. You see, all day I see emails saying "we want
shirts that say friends don't let friends fly plastic airplanes". Hey,
this is something I can help with, I have this tshirt thing set up which
I've only used to make the occasional custom tshirt/hat for myself. So
I look around for a picture and figure something in the RV photoshare is
something I can grab quick to make the shirt more interesting for us RV
builders, and people that have posted these pictures for sharing
wouldn't mind. Wow, what a judgement lapse at midnight for me, I
understand that now.
Don't worry, I am genuine, honest, and even likeable. But I made a
mistake of thinking this was just a shirt for a couple friends on the RV
list and that it was okay to grab a picture shared by someone from the
same group, without thinking of intellectual property and such. Sorry.
You could have just emailed me immediately and I would have done the
same thing and removed the image immediately. The whole thing about 13
years and xxx $$$ culminating in the sole purpose of this nice picture
is a little overblown, but I understand it was wrong to grab your
picture without asking. This wasn't the huge commercial undertaking you
are making this out to be, but even so I did wake up this morning
thinking "damn it Mitch, why didn't you wait and email that guy to see
if he wouldn't mind me using that picture".

P.S. If anybody has a nice inflight picture of an RV (or several), and
would like to see it on the shirt, please let me know. Also, I have
*no* idea what you want to see on a "Ramp Flea" shirt, suggestions welcome.

You well might be right but our Skyhawk had one of the plastic floats and
even using the idle cut-off was problematic as gasoline would ooze out of
the float to keep it running.

to use it. I guess if you get your picture on Avwebb it is special.
BTW didn't I read that some of the people in the picture did not even
know it was going to be published there? I really think that the
insinuation in Paul's post that you are not an honest person is WAY

Sounds like some poor sports to me. If somebody put my plane's picture on
their shirt I would do back flips and be a proud papa. How can somebody pay
you a higher compliment than this???? And, for paying you this high
compliment they are labeled "non-genuine, dishonest, and un-likable"??

Well, this is kind of a late post on this subject, even though it came
to mind immediately. I don't think it is Cessna Bashing in particular
but: when you start to compare the high quality of aircraft coming out
of garages and basements, Wichita doesn't hold a candle to them. There
is some amazing craftsmanship on so many more custom aircraft,
especially the RV series, that seems to improve every year. I see a
factory-built on the cover of a magazine and see wrinkles in the wing
skins that would send shivers up the spine of an RV builder.
And find a store-bought design that compares to what is in the custom
arena now days. With few exceptions. How many people would not be flying
if not for custom aircraft?
Are Cessna's good aircraft? You bet. Does Piper put out a good machine?
Absolutely. But give me my RV most any day (unless I'm gonna haul 4 or 5
people around; then a factory job might be better. Could take 'em two at
a time, maybe.....) But I sure like passing those Arrows on a clear
Saturday.
I was at an airport the other day and a Cessna 206 was on the ramp and I
walked up to it and all the ROUND RIVETS on the fuselage and wings
startled me. Looked like it had some sort of a disease. Don't TOUCH that
unless you want to catch it! You sure get use to the look of flush
rivets.

I know Paul pretty well. He is a bit whacked on occasion, but otherwise a
terrific friend 1000 miles away.
Im in the picture, in fact front and center. I was surprised to see it on a
tee shirt for sale.
Although I was uneffected by the picture on the mug/tee shirt, it was
because I figured Paul sent it to whom ever posted it. Most of us shoot
pictures around the web all the time with out regard to where or who it goes
to. But I can easily see Pauls point. If your ganna ask for money for a
product, you should at least check with the picture owner.
I don't think Pauls request is unreasonable. And Mitches response was also
done well.

I think this is the problem. A lot of people don't give a second thought to
using intellectual property that is posted on the internet (In this case
there was a second thought). This has happened to me and I didn't like it
at all. In my case it was an employee at a well known kit airplane
manufacturer who used my property (photos and ideas) in a for profit
newsletter. When questioned about it, they gave a half hearted apology and
an explanation that it was on the internet and they didn't realize it was my
web site.
I thought, at the least, I would be offered a years subscription to the
newsletter. Nothing of the sort happened. Makes you feel kind of silly for
going to the trouble of taking the photos, writing the accounts and making
them available. If they are not even worth asking permission to use, they
must not be worth much.
Had I been asked, I, of course, would have cheerfully given permission.

Jerry,
Does it continue to fire after the MAGS are shut off? The power (master)
shouldn't make any difference. If it does continue after the mags are off then
you've got at least 2 problems.
One thing for sure is that it is getting fuel AFTER the mixture is pulled. Cy
could very well be right on about the float problem but first check to be sure
that your mixture cable is correctly adjusted to pull the lever on the carb all
the way to idle cut-off. Then it looks like it's time to pull the carb.
