I have built two RVs with the IO-360 B1B engines with the Bendix system and
ran the #4 hose up between cylinders #1 and #3 to the flow divider. Make sure
you use a well manufactured insulated wire braid Teflon hose and avoid sharp
bends. This is important to prevent erroneous fuel flow indication.

Out of frustration I have recently been doing a count of RV building related
posts versus non-building related posts. Consistently, almost half (19 out
of 40 posts yesterday) have nothing to do with building or flying an RV. I,
like many, receive my posts in a manner which does not permit me to delete
just one post. Consequently I waste a lot of time looking for posts that are
of value as a builder.
Please folks. Can't we all be a little more prudent in keeping our posts to
RV building/flying? -----Please.

I have been picking up United Instruments flight instruments (Altimeter,
Airspeed, VSI) when I can find them being sold at "low" prices, thinking
that the U.S. made, tried and true was better than some Tiawanese knock
off. Van's has discontinued the United Altimeters and sold off their
stock, for instance, for about $100 less than most places sell them.
They're still a lot more expensive than the imports, though. I'm
beginning to wonder, are they really any better? Obviously Van's is
selling them off because people aren't buying them, presumably prefering
the cheaper imports.
Does any one have any experience in this respect. Are the US-made ones
more repairable or reliable? Am I wasting my instrument budget?

If someone does, could they please spell it RAMP FLEA, and not RAMP
FLEE? From Mirriam-Webster (www.m-w.com):
Main Entry: flea
Pronunciation: 'flE
Function: noun
Etymology: Middle English fle, from Old English flEa; akin to Old High
German flOh flea
: any of an order (Siphonaptera) of small wingless bloodsucking insects
that have a hard laterally compressed body and legs adapted to leaping
and that feed on warm-blooded animals
Main Entry: flee
Pronunciation: 'flE
Function: verb
Inflected Form(s): fled /'fled/; fleeing
Etymology: Middle English flen, from Old English flEon; akin to Old High
German fliohan to flee
intransitive senses
1 a : to run away often from danger or evil : FLY b : to hurry toward a
place of security
2 : to pass away swiftly : VANISH
What we do with our RV's is FLEE, but what people call us is Ramp FLEAs
because there's so damn many of us.

Subject: | Ground adj rudder pedals RV8 QB |
--> RV-List message posted by: Geoff Evans <hellothaimassage@yahoo.com>
When installing the ground adjustable rudder pedal kit in a QB RV-8, the
plans call for removing one rivet on the angle by the gear box and installing
a countersunk blind rivet there. They also call for relieving the metal of
the rudder pedal support angle where it sits over the top of the shop head of
a rivet on the firewall angle.
Well, when I place my rudder pedal angles on the floor at the proper distance
from each other and the proper distance from the centerline of the rivets
that are already in the floor, the angles sit directly over the tops of the
rivets in the firewall angle and in the gear box angle.
The plans call for putting an additional rivet on each end of the rudder
pedal angle (where it connects to the firewall angle and gearbox angle), but
if the existing rivet (on the firewall side) and hole (from the removed rivet
on the gear box side) lie in the exact center of the rudder pedal angle,
there isn't enough room left in that small angle flange to drill another hole
on either end and respect either the edge distance requirements or the
distance from the existing rivets.
Has anyone else had this problem?
On the gearbox side, instead of installing a flush rivet in the hole where I
removed the AN470 and then drilling a second hole in the angle that doesn't
respect distance requirements (as stated above), I'm tempted to put the BPSQ
blind rivet through the rudder pedal angle and the floor angle/structure in
the existing hole and call it good enough.
However, on the firewall side, the shop head of the existing rivet is exactly
in the center of the rudder pedal angle, and as stated above, I don't have
room to drill another hole for the BPSQ blind rivet. Can I just leave this
rivet out? After all, the rudder pedal angle piece is held on to the floor
with about 15 other rivets.
I'm going to call Van's about this on Monday, but every time I call them with
a question like this, they say something like, "The engineers drew the
drawing this way for a reason," or, "We've never heard of this problem
before, so our drawings must be correct." It's almost like they won't admit
that their drawings might contain errors, even though we all know that some
of them do (rivet length callouts, for example).
Thanks.
-Geoff

--> RV-List message posted by: "WALTER KERR" <kerrjb@msn.com>
Interesting to note that there were 4 RV accidents in the first 4 months of 03
on the NTSB file, thank goodness none were fatal. All four lost engine power,
all four flipped inverted during off field landings. Several had to have help
to get out. One was in 2 feet of water, thank goodness it was not deeper. The
one on Jan 1 was a 70 year old 6600 hour pilot who I talked with at length. He
had to cut his way out of the unbroken slider on the inverted 6. He said he always
flew with a large pocket knife that the blade locked open so that it would
not close on his hand. I have my co pilot stick loaded with lead and a sharp
point on the bottom to help me break the canopy. Kevin Horton was by a day last
month and when we flew he really liked the stick idea and suggested that I
put a push button release so that it stayed in place during an accident. The
70 year old had shoulder straps tight but still slide by someway and ended up
in the baggage compartment. He had his knife in his pocket. I have since been
flying with one in my pocket and it gives me some small comfort when flying over
water.

Run all the grounds for the switches to a spdt switch labeled front and

Fellow listers,
What are you doing (have you done) to support the forward (back) ends of your long
gyros?
A couple of mine will go through the next forward bulkhead so I can probably rivet
on a piece of angle and clamp the gyro to that. One (AI) is too short but
is right on top of another (HSI) that goes through the next forward bulkhead
- I was thinking of making up a spacer to put those two together and clamp them
together using the support on the one that goes all the way through to hold
both. Another of mine (S-Tec30 TC/AP) is also too short and is not close enough
to another one to "lean" on.
Your thoughts please,

What functions will be on the stick grips?
Are there any functions that you will want to have available from
both seats at once instead of rear seat only (e.g. my pitch trim is
set up so it can be active from front seat only, or from both seats).
My trim is handled by having a switch that selects which stick grip
switch has a path to ground. You might be able to have several
functions grounded through the same switch, so one switch can enable
or disable multiple back seat switches.
For reference, you can see the wiring diagrams I used for the pitch
trim on my web site. Look in the electrical systems section -
drawings 4.2 and 4.4.

Hey, Jim: What a guy. Finally someone gets ticked off enough to blow the
whistle on this crap. !,000 builders have listened to a couple of hundred
useless messages about some poor guy who made a suggestion before talking to
Johnny Cochrane from the football hero zap the wife scheme. Most builders -
with the amount of time to read this junk (1,000 people X 100+ messages)
could have built an airplane. This is a lot of crap that has nothing to do
with the reason we joined this List. Now.....pick up your Avery tool, or
post a message requesting info on how to use that tool. If you can't do
either, join some other List. Those who remain are focused on building
airplanes. Send us a farewell message - we wish you well. I'll say
Good-Bye now. Absolutely do not archive

Subject: | Removing a Sensenich prop |
--> RV-List message posted by: "Doug and Bonnie" <dmedema@att.net>
I'm working on mounting my spinner on my Sensenich prop.
The prop extension has two pins that insert into holes in
the prop itself. I cleaned the pins with Scotch brite
and polished the holes in the prop with Scotch brite and
mounted the prop, spinner rear plate, and prop extension
onto my engine. It was a tight fit, but I pulled the
assembly tight using the prop bolts. I now have the
spinner cutouts done and the spinner drilled to the
rear mounting plate. I removed the prop, spinner rear
plate, and prop extension from the engine and tried to
separate them. No joy!
I made a "gear puller" of sorts by using some 3/8"
threaded rods pushing on a washer which pushed on the pin.
I put some nuts on the threaded rod and placed a 1/4" piece
of steel over the two pieces of threaded rod. I could raise
this piece of steel by moving the nuts. I then put two pieces
of 1/4" steel across the first piece and tied them to the
prop using the straps Van supplied with the wing kit.
Turning the nuts so as to raise the steel cross bar resulted
in the 1/4" steel bending! I suppose I could get some
thicker steel, but there seems like there has to be a better
way.
Any suggestions would be welcome.
Thanks,

airport!

T-Shirt, What T-Shirt, Where T-Shirt!
We don't need any stinking T-Shirts.
Sorry. :-)
The other day, I was washing the plane when a group of people came up and
asked if they could look at the plane. They were a A&P class with their
instructor. After a couple minutes they started to leave when the
instructor said "From the look of the bug pattern on the plane, I think you
should fly higher."
God, I love living here in the high desert of Southern Calif where one
minute after TO, I can fly as low as I can go without seeing another soul.
However, yesterday as I crested a small hill, I flew over a flock of sheep.
The slowest Rocket is fast enough to be gone before the sheep could even
react. Damn it was fun.

I have to agree with recent posts to the List. Please keep the issues to
RV related topics, Please refrain from posting messages on tee shirts,
religion, politics, notes to long lost buddies, etc. and please DO post RV
construction topics, RV flying info., kit questions, etc. Please bring the
"List" back where it is supposed to be or little of the expertise will be
here when you may need it in the future. Recently we have been ruining a
good thing!!!
