Consistently, almost half (19 out of 40 posts yesterday) have nothing to do with building or flying an RV. I, like many, receive my posts in a manner which does not permit me to delete just one post. Consequently I waste a lot of time looking for posts that are of value as a builder. Please folks. Can't we all be a little more prudent in keeping our posts to RV building/flying? -----Please. Van's has discontinued the United Altimeters and sold off their stock, for instance, for about $100 less than most places sell them. They're still a lot more expensive than the imports, though. I'm beginning to wonder, are they really any better? Obviously Van's is selling them off because people aren't buying them, presumably prefering the cheaper imports. Brian Denk RV8 N94BD do not archive ________________________________ Message 12 ____________________________________ Time: 10:15:30 AM PST US From: Geoff Evans Subject: RV-List: Ground adj rudder pedals RV8 QB --> RV-List message posted by: Geoff Evans When installing the ground adjustable rudder pedal kit in a QB RV-8, the plans call for removing one rivet on the angle by the gear box and installing a countersunk blind rivet there. They also call for relieving the metal of the rudder pedal support angle where it sits over the top of the shop head of a rivet on the firewall angle. Well, when I place my rudder pedal angles on the floor at the proper distance from each other and the proper distance from the centerline of the rivets that are already in the floor, the angles sit directly over the tops of the rivets in the firewall angle and in the gear box angle. The plans call for putting an additional rivet on each end of the rudder pedal angle (where it connects to the firewall angle and gearbox angle), but if the existing rivet (on the firewall side) and hole (from the removed rivet on the gear box side) lie in the exact center of the rudder pedal angle, there isn't enough room left in that small angle flange to drill another hole on either end and respect either the edge distance requirements or the distance from the existing rivets. Has anyone else had this problem? On the gearbox side, instead of installing a flush rivet in the hole where I removed the AN470 and then drilling a second hole in the angle that doesn't respect distance requirements (as stated above), I'm tempted to put the BPSQ blind rivet through the rudder pedal angle and the floor angle/structure in the existing hole and call it good enough. However, on the firewall side, the shop head of the existing rivet is exactly in the center of the rudder pedal angle, and as stated above, I don't have room to drill another hole for the BPSQ blind rivet. Can I just leave this rivet out? After all, the rudder pedal angle piece is held on to the floor with about 15 other rivets. I'm going to call Van's about this on Monday, but every time I call them with a question like this, they say something like, "The engineers drew the drawing this way for a reason," or, "We've never heard of this problem before, so our drawings must be correct." It's almost like they won't admit that their drawings might contain errors, even though we all know that some of them do (rivet length callouts, for example). All four lost engine power, all four flipped inverted during off field landings. Several had to have help to get out. One was in 2 feet of water, thank goodness it was not deeper. The one on Jan 1 was a 70 year old 6600 hour pilot who I talked with at length. He had to cut his way out of the unbroken slider on the inverted 6. He said he always flew with a large pocket knife that the blade locked open so that it would not close on his hand. I have my co pilot stick loaded with lead and a sharp point on the bottom to help me break the canopy. Kevin Horton was by a day last month and when we flew he really liked the stick idea and suggested that I put a push button release so that it stayed in place during an accident. The 70 year old had shoulder straps tight but still slide by someway and ended up in the baggage compartment. He had his knife in his pocket. I have since been flying with one in my pocket and it gives me some small comfort when flying over water. A couple of mine will go through the next forward bulkhead so I can probably rivet on a piece of angle and clamp the gyro to that. One (AI) is too short but is right on top of another (HSI) that goes through the next forward bulkhead - I was thinking of making up a spacer to put those two together and clamp them together using the support on the one that goes all the way through to hold both. Another of mine (S-Tec30 TC/AP) is also too short and is not close enough to another one to "lean" on. Are there any functions that you will want to have available from both seats at once instead of rear seat only (e.g. my pitch trim is set up so it can be active from front seat only, or from both seats). My trim is handled by having a switch that selects which stick grip switch has a path to ground. You might be able to have several functions grounded through the same switch, so one switch can enable or disable multiple back seat switches. For reference, you can see the wiring diagrams I used for the pitch trim on my web site. The prop extension has two pins that insert into holes in the prop itself. I cleaned the pins with Scotch brite and polished the holes in the prop with Scotch brite and mounted the prop, spinner rear plate, and prop extension onto my engine. It was a tight fit, but I pulled the assembly tight using the prop bolts. I now have the spinner cutouts done and the spinner drilled to the rear mounting plate. I removed the prop, spinner rear plate, and prop extension from the engine and tried to separate them. No joy! I made a "gear puller" of sorts by using some 3/8" threaded rods pushing on a washer which pushed on the pin. I put some nuts on the threaded rod and placed a 1/4" piece of steel over the two pieces of threaded rod. I could raise this piece of steel by moving the nuts. I then put two pieces of 1/4" steel across the first piece and tied them to the prop using the straps Van supplied with the wing kit. Turning the nuts so as to raise the steel cross bar resulted in the 1/4" steel bending! I suppose I could get some thicker steel, but there seems like there has to be a better way.
