Add 5K for unforseen stuff and you might squeak by. Van's price does not
cover paint. I am just finishing up painting and used Polyurathane (PPG)
cost was 1500.00 just in supplies.

Gert, the only companies that do 'renter's' (really called non-owned)
coverage are AIG (thru many brokers and all at the same pricing) and AVEMCO.
AIG's application form has the prices printed right on it.
AVEMCO's liability has the same drawbacks as their airplane coverages do.
The liability limits are sublimited per PERSON as opposed to AIG's per
PASSENGER. AVEMCO limits anyones bodily injury whether inside or outside
the plane.
I have heard the Global is thinking of coming out with a non owner policy,
but haven't seen it yet. They do a non owner coverage now, but for CFI's
thru NAFI.

Due to aging and constant battle for medical I have decided to sell the prepunched
Wings and Empennage kit Purchased from Van's on 3/30/98, that consists of
the following:
RV-6 Empenage, complete, (except for tips)
Left wing: on Phlogiston spar nearly complete, Aileron mounted, next step is mount
the flap, top skin must be installed. Wiring for strobe/light installed, tubing
and ports for for AOA installed. Landing light installed. Air speed tubing
installed. Gas tank installed and tested with avas. Tie down completed. Wing
tip is not installed.
Right wing: gas tank complete and tested with avgas,(unmounted)
aileron and flap constructed, (unmounted) aileron control backet complete. Spar,
is complete as received from Phlogiston.
Ribs have been straightened and ready to be installed on spar.
All skins and material to complete the wings are included in the sale.
Stobes are tested monthly,(Not installed), several instruments are available. AOA
by Proprietary Software Systems is available.

What kind of advice can I get regarding the Garmin 295 vs the 196? The 196 is
supposed to be faster, but is the 295 fast enough? Can you see the 295 clearly
in any light condition? Anyone out there flow both of them that can give us
a real world comparison?

Bill,
I have flown with my Garmin 196 a few times and like it a lot. I also use
it in my car and truck with the driving software. I flew in the back seat
of Mike Robbins RV-8 with his Garmin 295 and my Garmin 196 both going, and I
did prefer the 196, although it really wasn't a fair or thorough comparison.
I believe the only advantage of the 295 is the color, which is more than
offset by the higher resolution of the monochrome 196. The 196 has
adjustable backlighting and contrast so you can make it readable pretty much
no matter what the lighting conditions. Color is nice, but my preference
would definitely be for the 196.

Any of you Minnesota RVers ever fly into the Belle Plaine airport (7Y7). I'm thinking
of flying up to visit Dad, 7Y7 is a grass strip a mile from his house
and I'm just wondering about the quality of the field. I don't mind going into
grass as long as there are no big ruts or holes.

Shipping costs for the 1000 small things you need will add up very
quickly. FWIW, purchase Vans wire3 kit and FWF plumbing kit. That alone
will shave you considerable $$ on piecemeal shipping costs.

Van's estimator has proven to be pretty accurate. If you're a real
scrounger, you can build an airplane for well under the cost Van's
lists.
On the other hand, if cost is no object, or if you're a lazy buyer, your
project can cost much more than the factory estimates.

Vans and ACS sold a small LED swivel map light in the past( cost about
46$ ). Its the one about the size of a AAA battery and pivots and
swivels and has four LEDs(not the round eyeball, three hole, quarter
sized one) Neither Vans or ACS has these now. I need two of these map
lights...anyone have these in there parts bin or know where I can get
them??? Or, any leads on a LED map light that looks like it belongs in
a airplane ???

I can't tell from that web page how they are powered. Anyone else see something

Neato looking lights! I would try to put a piece of black heatshrink around
the body so they don't emit so much light out the sides. Just want directed
light onto the panel and not up towards my eyes.

Scott, I kept every receipt for every item I spent in constructing my RV-6.
Whether it was a cotter pin from my local hardware store or balloons from
Wal-Mart to test my gas tanks. The total cost was $55,211.66. This included
$18,305 from Aerosport power for a Bart Lalond engine. I also did my own
painting. Some of the more interesting entries in my spreadsheet included
more money spent at NAPA Auto parts then at Aircraft spruce, ($2131 vs
$1731), $1637 for shipping and $23.25 at our local small town grocery store.
The 55K included all tools I bought in support of the project whether they
had any use after the project or not.
In building an airplane you ARE helping the economy to move forward. In
construction of my RV-6 I purchased parts, tools, supplies or services from
64 different businesses across 15 states and one Canadian province. To my
knowledge I did not purchase anything from France, Germany or Russia.

bottles or Coleman fuel (2 quarts or less) in the baggage compartment. Is
there any risk (other then what would normally be assumed if doing the same
thing by auto) in doing this? This also assumes the containers are
adequately sealed and secured. Any input would be appreciated.

Maybe this is obvious to everyone except us novice painters out there, but HVLP
7-10 PSI is the pressure needed at the cap. But there's no gauge there.
Conversion type HVLP guns usually have a regulator at the inlet to the gun.
You need to set that pressure to about 29 PSI. Much lower, and you will get
orange peel. Orange peel is not mysterious; it occurs when the paint is not
atomized enough. If the pressure is right, and the reducer type/ratio is
right, then the other possible causes are the cap size too large, and (as the
previous post advises) moving the gun too fast.

There may be other concerns I haven't thought of but the first I would
be concerned about is carrying liquid fuel in a container anywhere in
the cockpit, including the baggage area. Changing 10-12 thousand feet
or more in altitude on a typical container is probably not a good idea
unless the container has the sealing capacity to be certain it won't
suddenly start spewing some fuel around.
And even then, assuming a sudden unexpected forced landing it could be
an additional fire hazard if the landing is rather abrupt. Propane,
properly stored, would be better IMHO. If just interested in camp
lights, buy a good fluorescent camping light. And eat sandwiches that
night. :-)

If it is not too late, buy some PVC piping from the local home repair store
and use it for conduit. It is much smoother and you can literally push the
wires through. The stuff from Van's is flexible and corrugated, therefore
very hard to fish wires through. You can also buy it in various sizes and
just pro-seal the ends in place. Just my $0.02 worth.

I have carried the little propane bottles for my PEAK stove and lantern
to altitudes of 13000' with no problems. Camping has been a lot of fun
out of the RV. Our camping gear weighs in at 49 lb., including the air
mattress that my wife requires.

Are you telling me that the fuel at Le Seur (12Y) has been 2.10 for the

California fuel prices in San Diego were averaging about 2.75 +- 10 cents
due to global events. I tell ya we get so screwed out here, makes me want
to move. Anyone know of a place where the weather averages 75 +- 20 and the

I have the 295 and really like the color moving map, but I can tell you that
visibility in sunlight is an issue. My RV isn't flying yet, but have taken
the 295 on flights in other aircraft. It's a little on the bulky side and
can be a challenge to mount. Mine is sunk in the center of panel angled to
the pilot, but is removable. If the 196 would have been available, I would
have seriously considered it.

A bag of chips may explode at altitude, but a bag of chips is mostly a
bag of air, whereas a container of fuel is mostly (liquid) fuel. Gases
expand a *lot* more than liquids do when taken to altitude, which is why
it's quite safe to take a bottle of gatorade with you on a long flight
(and why you can hope to drink it without soaking yourself).
Propane bottles and other properly designed fuel containers (like the
aluminum fuel bottles you can buy for white gas) are designed to contain
pressure as altitudes change. Use them, and you should be perfectly
safe carrying them in your airplane in the cabin. Barring a collision
with terrain, of course.
But bags of chips, helium balloons*, etc. can and do explode in flight.

A couple of years ago there was a nice article in the RV-ator about building your
own.
I think the guy with the Red and White RV6 with Checkerboard tail (on one of Van's
calendars) is who wrote the
article.
He used Radio Shack LED's. His circuit is what I used. I installed them in the
roll bar like he did. They pretty
well illuminate the panel for a little over a dollar each and the current draw
is well under an amp for the five
that I used.
These are not "beamers" like this website but they do shine out in a pattern.
I use mine with a dimmer.

I've had the little green Coleman propane cannisters up to about 8500' MSL a
zillion times with no problems. I'm either very lucky or it's really no
problem. I figure leaving 'em out in the summer sun has to be worse than
lowering ambient pressure.
The first time a bag of chips exploded in the back seat of the Mooney I
almost leaked propane myself...really gets you by surprise! 8-)

I used Poly tubing in My RV-4. Mine was 1/2" with 5/8" OD and I used a
carpenters Spade bit to make the holes in the main ribs, about 1" above the
bottom skin between the centermost lightening holes. You might have to put in
a larger size to take all the wires. Ace Hardware Poly Tubing.

I have a 295 mounted in the panel just below the dash
(the part that overhangs the panel and gives it
shade.) I now have 20 hours on my plane and love my
295. The color display works very well in the shade on
a bright sunny day, with using aircraft battery power.
I think Jerry's thought about the 195 is good. I think
if the 195 was available when I purchased the 295, I
would have saved my money and bought the 195.

As noted below, liquids should generally be no problem when carried in an
airplane. However the contained must be secured in a vertical position so
the cap is uppermost. If placed on their side with the liquid against the
cap, any air left above the liquid will caused a pressure differntial at
altitude and possibly force liquid out the cap. Flammable liquid = fire
hazard (obviously).
People who carry vehicles in C-130s and other large transport airplanes are
quite careful about how the gas tanks are filled and capped for this reason.
Lots of stories in the military about trucks and jeeps leaking gasoline in
mid-Atlantic. Makes the crews nervous.

I would just add that builders should plan ahead and think about how they
are going to run wires from the panel (or wherever) through the fuselage and
then out into the wing (normally from somewhere under the seat). The idea
here is to line up the poly tubing in the wing with the exit point in the
fuselage side. This will avoid unneccessary S-bends in the wiring and make
feeding the wires a lot simpler. There is not a lot of room between the root
rib and the fuse side skin on a -6 for the average size finger. (Guess how I
know, and -6A builders don't take wings off for fun or to feed wiring once
they are on).
In other words, don't just chose a location that looks OK for the wings,
plan the fuselage wiring runs too and match the wiring provisions in the
wing to the fuselage.

Airplane camping is great fun, if you are young and tough. Any fuel is
more dangerous than say, some charcoal briquets. However, people do carry
many gallons of gasoline in fuselages in non-RVs. People also routinely
lug propane bottles up to campsites in the high Sierras above 8000
feet. There is one pass at about 9900 feet, name escapes me, I have
crossed with travel trailer with two 8 gallon propane bottles. Personally,
I'd prefer a Coleman gas stove. Get sturdier cans so you don't carry the
tin ones. Good job for a wing locker, huh? Maybe a double can.
A lot of airports have camping and a restaurant.
Somebody please calculate the pressure change in percent inside a propane
bottle at sea level and say, 12,000 feet.

Steve:
I would suggest heat from a hair dryer. Keep the tip of it moving over the
area you are removing so you reduce the chance of blistering paint. Tease a
corner of the vinyl up with a razor blade or exacto knife until you can get
ahold of it, then and gently peel it off. Keep heating the area just
forward of where you have the material lifted off.

So far as I know mountain climbers get the pressurized camp stove canisters
to some interesting altitudes (higher than most RVers will go) without
difficulties.
In the case of an uncontrolled landing, the fuel on board to fear the most
is in the wings!

You can EASILY spend twice that much!! If you try to skimp by you'll have
to be willing to spend much more time building and searching for discounted
parts. There's also a safety factor involved in cutting corners. Then
there's the question of rebuilding the parts you saved on i.e. old style
radios, cdi's...
If you're committed to building an airplane and want to keep the cost down,
you'll find a way to make ends meet. Just be careful not to be too
conservative. It can turn into a looooonnnnngggg project.

Go to an auto body and paint supplier and tell them your needs they have a
product designed for removing vinyl signs etc.

I have a 6 empenage and am trying to sell it. Ive had a lot of questions
regarding the compatability of my 6 tail on a 7. Ive found that Vans made 2
tails for the 6. As the 7 project was nearing production, Vans figured
builders would start on the 6 tail and then want to switch to the 7 once it
was available. So, for a while, he made the 6 tail fit the 7(or 8), I
think. Most of these can easily be interchanged. The only problem I know
of it putting too small of a vs/rudder on a 7. A buddy of mine has put an 8
tail on a 6 and a 7.
I guess the best thing to do is to call Vans. However, keep in mind you can
always modify later.

Another search through the archives did not produce an answer. How has everyone
dimpled the forward-most two rivet holes on the HS main skin near the 707 spar?
I could just barely get to the 3rd one back with the c-frame, and it looks
like it put the dimple slightly at an angle. I don't think I can make the 1st
or 2nd hole without further mangling the skin. How has everyone done these?

I can't picture the exact holes you're refering to, but pop rivet dimple
dies are great for hard-to-reach places where the C-frame or squeezer
cannot reach. Available from Avery, Cleveland, etc. Buy 'em now,
you'll use them often.
