High cost drill.....................Low cost drill................... Well,
I've got to throw my free (get what ya pay for) advice. With the new pre
punched kits, "at least through wing contruction", 99% of all drilling you
are going to do is ream prepunched holes. I used my el super cheapo,
Walmart special DeVilbiss air drill that I bought as a package deal with
sanding and Cut-off tool for dirt cheap. Heck, looking back on it, I
haven't even bought any new #30 or #40 bits since the original half dozen
each..............
If I had to actually drill a buttload of "real" holes, I'm sure I would feel
different. We don't drill anymore all we do is throw some oil in the drill
and ream on.

A RV-6A was destroyed this past Friday, in north central NJ from this.
The front gear was curled back and under the aircraft. The RV flipped
over. No injuries to the pilot. RV is most likely totaled.

I am still trying to bend the canopy frame on my RV-7. It's about to drive
me nuts. How close does all this stuff need to be. I have the shape of the
forward bow pretty well done and the width of the forward bow and the shape
of the side rails are good but I don't see anyway possible to get the aft
bow to set in from the skins 1/16". It's about right at the top but by the
time it comes down the sides it's 3/8" in from the skins and then it goes
back to 1/16" as it approaches the side rails. If I bend it to fit then my
side rails are going to be too high in the back.
The forward bow and the roll bar are not quite square with each other
either. I will keep tweaking on it but I would like to know how close all
this stuff has to be before I drive myself crazy trying to get it all
perfect.

Although I would not want it to happen, an unported fuel tank and
resultant engine stoppage should not be a disaster in this situation.
You are in the slip because you are high and need a steep descent to
make the runway. If your engine stops -- just land the airplane on the
runway like you were planning to do.
It could be a problem however, if you are in the habit of using power to
arrest your sink rate. An RV moving slowly, with full flaps and in a
forward slip has a very high sink rate. The flare must be timed
perfectly or you are in for a hard landing. At slower speeds you may
not have enough energy to fully arrest the sink rate -- even with a
perfect flare.
When I am making a steep descent, I lower the nose (a lot) just before
the flare to get enough energy to arrest my sink rate. I leave the
throttle closed.

Having thought about it a bit more, it seems the more elegant solution
to the unported fuel tank problem would be simply to switch to the
downwind fuel tank before the approach. With proper fuel management,
it seems to me to be an unlikely event to lose the engine for lack of
fuel by doing this at the proper time.

Close enough to fit.

You can fill or shim low spots on the frame but where frame sticks out
beyond the skins, that is hard to fix.

I suspect many are not square and it isn't terribly critical. The plexi
edges will be close and the strip that covers the gap between windscreen
and canopy hides all. I haven't done this but I think a rubber gasket
between roll bar and canopy front bow might be good idea.

This is a similar scenario that got Bill Pagan a while back in his -8A:
Porpoise, nose gear failure, flipped over, went off the runway. He and wife
got out with minor injuries. Love sliders and their rollbars!
In the times that I've arrested a landing descent with a bit too much aft
stick, if I can't set the pitch attitude where it needs to be within a few
seconds, I go around. With the power available in the RV series of
aircraft, the go-around is a simple affair. Just gotta keep the ego in
check and never fight the airplane down in the runway in a series of bounces
and lurches.

Phil;
I would second Hal's comments below.
This is simply a longish, progressive process. Each time you do an
adjustment lower down it throws off what you had fitting well higher up.
Then you have to redadjust up there and work back lower down. Best way seems
to be to start at the top center of the aft bow and then work downwards to
the left and right sides. Note that at the centre of the aft bow, bending is
mostly needed in a vertical plane and then by the mid point, the plane of
bending is at about a 45 deg. angle. (This is a progessive change all along
the aft canopy edge.)
The actual canopy plastic is quite thick, so make an adequate allowance for
this. About 1/8 - 3/16 in below the line of the adjoining fuselage skin is
needed. Being a bit high is no problem. Being low will cause some problems
when fitting the canopy skirt, so use some shim material to fill this out as
needed. I used autobody filler as a simple "progessive" and adjustable (by
sanding) shimming method and ended up with a "D" shaped tube cross section
vice a round "O" tube crossection. A smooth curve without "bumps" will also
avoid stressing the canopy plastic.
No need to be fussy about the canopy - bow gap or fit. Leave lots of room
fore and aft and use a soft rubber seal or gasket to close the gap and keep
the rain out. Try car trunk sealing material from a body shop supplier as a
gasket; this stuff comes in lots of sizes and shapes and is about the right
resiliency. Shim as needed with body filler to get the windscreen - canopy
join as you like it. Better if the canopy is a bit lower than the windscreen
for fitting the fairing strip and later ease of closing the canopy.
Suggest you make up some temporary wood blocks for the aft canopy pins as
you are working on the canopy. The fit may change several times when you are
working. Then when you are done, drill the good plastic ones for final use.
Replacement plastic ones cost about $4.00 a pair. (guess how I know...)

Jim Hasper commented about being asked to do 20 landings during a BFR and he
only counted it as one flight. I do the same, so my 700 flights are one take
off and one full stop landing with perhaps some touch and goes thrown in now
and then. The 700 were full flights and not circuits around the patch...FWIW
Also on the porposing thread....I just had a BFR this morning and the
instructor commented on the nose high attitude during flare to landing in
the RV6A and I explained about crunching nose gears and porposing...he
seemed satisfied, so I am good for another two years !

Another question... How close should the forward bow come to the roll bar?
The little flanges on the rollers keep the roll bar about 3/16" away and I
probably have about 1/4" or maybe a little more distance at the top. Should
I trim the rollers to make it snug up to the roll bar??

Let me say this, the frame on my 6 had to be CUT loose at the rear bows AND
the front of the spine and rewelded to get a good fit. No biggie........just do
whatever it takes. Once you're finished the canopy it'll seem like it wasn't
that big of a deal. Just keep working on it.....if you get
frustrated......move on to something else and come back to it in a few weeks or
so. RELAX!!
Also, get the hollow 'D' seal from J.C. Whitney to seal between the roll bar
and the front of the slider bow. Fill the void between the roll bar and your
fairing with micro then stick the 'D' seal on AFTER you paint the plane. Please
paint the inside of your fairing........it'll look MUCH better than raw
glass.

little piece and welded it back togeather so it was streight.
Worked great.
Cut little pieces till it looks good then get it welded by someone if you
can't.

Phil,
I think the most important part is to get the canopy frame parallel to the
fuselage skin and canopy rails when in the closed position. Everything else
you can shim or cover up. A really good-looking slider, however, is one in
which the side skirts match the fuselage perfectly--not easy to do. I
rarely see one that is perfect, mine included. But you can come close! And
then there are the rear skirts. Here is where the true measure of a good
canopy fit is determined. The first thing slider guys look at on someone
else's airplane is the canopy fit on the fuse sides and how tight the skirts
hug the back.

I saw it flying last friday when I was up there for transition training. I
beleive Van flies it home everyday at least thats the way it was explained.
Has a nice engine monitor too, but a little to much of a light show for my
taste.

Well, I admit it, I've left it to almost the last minute. I'm going to
be at OSH (arriving on the 28th with the rest of the Cup racers) and
have no place lined up to stay.
I've been all through the list of hotels on the EAA website and nobody
has any available rooms anywhere near the airport. I really, really
don't want to stay 50+ miles away.
Does anyone know of any rooms that might be available in the immediate
vicinity of Wittman Field? Maybe someone with a reservation who won't
be attending this year, after all...?
Camping is probably out for a couple of reasons: 1) I'm a camping virgin
(except for one night that is best left unmentioned and unremembered)
and have no equipment; and 2) 'roughing it' for me is a four star hotel
instead of five. Well, maybe not that bad, but you get the idea... :-)
Anyway, any help at all would be greatly appreciated!

For those of you that have painted your own plane, just how many gallons
did you use for a single stage paint? I applied 3 coats on the heavy side I
think. and want to compare.

I cut the slider center bar and lengthened it a little bit, maybe a 1/4
inch. Sounds like they still aren't made quite right. Then the wheel
brackets hit the roll bar, the canopy front bow was close to the roll bar
and the rear of the frame didn't stick up too high. People talk about the
compound curve between the canopy and the turtledeck but there isn't one in
the design. My rear skirts are aluminum and fit snug at top but not at
sides. One day, I will make new rear skirts and they will fit without any
shrinking. They need to be more 'C' shaped.

The RV-10 does have our engine monitor in it. Ken Krueger is even
downloading all the engine data after each flight and graphing it in Excel. You
can see
the cylinder head temps dropping as they break in.
We will be at Oshkosh booth 4077 , drop by and see us.

Scott,
I used PPG Concept and also found that it took 3 coats to really get the
finish I was after. Because we all typically use multiple colors it's a bit
hard to keep track of how much paint is being used. In all though I remember
adding it up and between the white, red, and gray I used nearly 3 gallons.

Call the EAA Housing Hotline. I would suggest you stay in a private home
recommended by them. I have used this process for the last 6 years and it
is very enjoyable. I have stayed with one family for 4 years and another
for the last two.
The number is on the EAA's website.

I have a tent, a sleeping bag a foam pad and a pillow. That is all. I NEVER
camp anywhere but OSH. The food is handy, the showers are fairly close,
(sometimes cold unless you are an early riser). A tent is cheaper than one
night at a Super-8 and there is nothing on earth like waking up to the
sound of a Merlin in the morning!!!!!
The downside is some SOB yo-dels on the PA at 0700 every morning. I am
awake, but if they want a wake up call, why not play a R-2800 coming to
life...... Then of course the Thunderstorms are no fun either, but then
laying under lightening in an open field with a carbon fiber tent pole,
wondering how your airplane will look with a ball-peen paint job from the
hail, adds a little excitement to your life.
Give it a try! You have to take Motrin in the morning at OSH for your
hangover, it will help your sore back from the hard ground too!
Tailwinds,
Doug Rozendaal

I just want to say that I have the ACS2002 for my RV-7 and I'm in the
process of installing it. It looks great, it has every function I could
imagine wanting, and Rob & Ken have been a pleasure to deal with. Kudos to
Rob for making such a kick-butt product and backing it up with great
service.
I should have mine fired up within a few weeks, and I'm documenting the
installation process on my site (it's scattered right now but I'll
consolidate an ACS2002 specific page when I'm done). It's been painless
because absolutely everything is included, and any questions I've had have
been answered quickly.
I'm sure people seeing it on the RV-10 will be a major validator, but I
never had any doubts...I settled on the ACS2002 when I first saw it last
year. Seems to be the most comprehensive package and best display out
there.
I'm not affiliated, just a *very* happy customer who can't wait to fly with
it.

Hi Scott,
I used DuPont Imron on my RV6 and based on my paint purchases, I estimate that
it took 3 litres of blue, 3 litres of white plus a litre of reducer and another
litre of activator, for a total of 8 litres.
Add to that 2 litres of primer ( I also alodined/chromic acid - treated the entire
aircraft prior to painting) and I end up with around 10 litres of paint, not
counting the interior - say 2.64 US gallons.
At 8 pounds per gallon - say 20 lbs in weight
I found the Imron covered very well and I used an el-cheapo HVLP gun which seemed
to help reduce overspray
Cheers

Is that only counting gallons of the finish coat or are you also including

Dang, does that mean that IF you buy a QB, have someone build the wings and
tail, install the completed & wired panel, buy the seats, get it painted at
a shop and have a person test fly off all the time, take you and the plane
go to OSH and win an award for YOUR homebuilt. YEP, seen it done. Ya'll
don't have to know how to rivet, drill, cut, fit, paint etc as long as you
can write checks. Guess I'll just get have to get started on mining more
aluminum ore so I can "build" an RV-10. Should be able to get the -10 in the
air quicker than 5 years. But then flying is what it's all about. Do Not

Phil;
This is just my opinion, but I would suggest you arrange the bow to canopy
frame fit to end up with, say, 1/4" spacing with the over center lock in
place and use 3/8" thick rubber seal material. In other words, plan to
compress the rubber 1/8" or so in the closed position to get a good weather
seal. (This might be a bit more than 1/8" or a bit more as the latch goes
over center and then some spring back).
Obviously the spacing you choose will depend to a degree on the seal
material you end up using, so it might be advisable to investigate and
procure this early on. Some experiment and adjustment might be needed.
This will also look after minor variations in the bow-frame fit.
Good luck!

Camping at OSH doesn't need skill as much as tiredness and the ability to
take heat and humidity. One skill you do need is the knowledge that you
must have good equipment. I take a two person Eureka back packing
tent. It is both tent and tent fly (a sort of second roof) and sewn in
floor. Oh, yeah also a good set of netting. There are probably lots of
good tents but I would have trouble thinking of other than Eureka. We
bought an air mattress by Coleman, the lantern company a year ago and have
used it at least twenty times and it has never leaked! These plus a good
pillow, any cheap sleeping bag, a pee jar and four to six ounces per nite
of whiskey and you are set.
One year, I camped alone with the tent under the wing of the
Debonair. Lonesome, clear down by Basler . Now I camp in Scholler with
friends who have a pickup camper and a giant overfly.
I've stayed at distant motels and hotels too but camping is much more fun.

These weights can be found on the product's data sheets. There is a
surprisingly small amount, by weight, of volatiles in paint. The tough
part is knowing how much paint ends up on the plane vs in the air.
Plus, the color matters quite a bit (many of the colors are oxides of
relatively heavy metals).

This SOB is why there should be concealed carry allowed as OSH. That is

The last time I camped at Oshkosh, I was parked next to a Glasair. He
provided me with beer and left all he did not drink when he departed.
Sounds like I need to meet some of Doug's friends to get beer from. Wonder
if it is COLD beer or just beer?
Have stayed in a private house renting a room.
Rented a motor home with other RV'ers.
And stayed in the dorms.
The room in the house was my first trip and very enjoyable and I have
plesant memories of it.
Camping was the first time in my RV-6 and also enjoyable.
Would rather sleep in a bed if I can get one but would camping at Oshkosh is
second only to a CLEAN bed.
Have a room in the dorms this year.

Bill,
I don't know how old your plane is or where you got it certified, but many
exps pre '95ish may have a wide variety of operating limitations, some of
which do not include this statement. This is one area the FAA has been
slowly standardizing all across the land for the last 50 odd years.
Gary Sobeck's version is the best, mostly because that's the kinda guy he
is, but, it also is right out of the FAA documentation that covers
certification of aircraft. Its in a FAA Order, but I don't have the number
right in front of me as its on my workstation at work, and there's about 20
of them that relate to certification.
This also basically paraphrases CFR14 43.11a4 which is used for certified
aircraft.
"TTIS, Date
I certify that this aircraft has been inspected in accordance with an xxxx
inspection and was determined to be in an airworthy condition.
Name, rating, number"
Your limitations may also require the use of a checklist for this
inspection, but you are not required to reference this list in the logbook
entry. And I don't recommend that you do reference it, as no list is
perfect, therefore it is subject to lawsuit. A good starting point is CFR14
Part 43 Appx. D, although this one is very limited, I have seen some
manufacturer's checklists miss items from this one. And when you end up in
the King's court, it best to be able to say you've at least met the scope
and detail of the list written in the King's rulebook.
Also make all other service entries separate from the inspection entry.
And finally make sure your list of AD compliancies is accurate and up to
date. This is one many exps forget about, but CFR14 part 39 applies to all
aircraft. The requirement for the AD compliancy list is in Part 91.417,
which applies to all aircraft and is a must read for any aircraft
owner/operator.
http://a257.g.akamaitech.net/7/257/2422/14mar20010800/edocket.access.gpo.gov
/cfr_2002/janqtr/14cfr91.417.htm
may need to resplice the link.
And if you know what's best for you, totally ignore the part where it says
you can throw away most maintenance records after one year or when supercede
by further work.
and since this is probably more than you ever wanted to know, I will let
this one archive.

On mine the roller weldements are against the rollbar when closed. The front
bow and rollbar are pretty much parallel but I don't think that's
critical -- main thing is to make sure the latch goes over-center with a
solid feel but not too much force.
I've flown quite a bit in rain and the only place I get water in is in the
gap between the "hat" fairing and the center track in the rear. The way the
fiberglass fairing is laid up makes for a very close fit that seals pretty
well, and on my plane at least seems to be sufficient to keep the rain out.
I'm not sure but what a rubber channel wouldn't compromise an otherwise
tight fit and maybe cause a problem where there wasn't one to begin with. I
suggest building it without any seal materialo and figure out how/what to
add later if it turns out to be leaky.
As for bending the frame -- the main thing is simply PATIENCE. Bend just a
little bit at a time and keep checking, its an iterative process both to get
it right and also just to learn how bending one place affects the rest of
the frame. I thought I'd never get mine right and thought I might have to
cut/reweld, but after several evenings messing around with it I was able to
get it very very close with only a small 1/8" slice of 4130 tubing shimming
one front corner at the roller weldement. It fits really nice if I do say so
myself.. I do agree with what others said about the sides being more
important than the front. But mainly just have patience and you'll
eventually get it wrestled into shape.

I love camping out in Camp Scholler in an RV, the 4 wheel kind. Have done
it now for about 15 years, and have many long lasting friendships from it,
and see the same people over and over, as we all have. To the gentleman who
made the first post, I would recommend it. I have my own camper now, but
when I first started, I would fly into Chicago and rent a motorhome from
Crystal Lake RV. They have the best and newest stuff, and they are not
cheap, but well worth it. I would split it with a buddy and it would be no
more than a hotel. I would rent the smallest Class C they had WITH a
generator. I always camp in the 24 hour generator area, in case it gets
REALLY hot and I need the AC at night (sorry you tent folks, been there,
done that). Hope to see many RV folks there this year, and look forard to
camping under the wing in a tent some year. Glenn in Arizona -9A Emp. do

I weighed my RV-6 VERY carefully just before and just after paint. 1 coat of
primer, 2-3 coats of base, and 2-3 coats of clear (PPG basecoat/clearcoat
system). The paint (exterior only) added 10 pounds.
HOWEVER -- I have a buddy who used a lot more paint -- he kept on not being
satisfied with the finish, sanded and re-shot several times -- he claims he
added more than 20lbs to his plane. So it definitely depends on technique
and skill (the skill wasn't mine -- have to admit I worked with a
professional aircraft painter to get mine done....)

Oh sure Doug, It's easy to carry next to nothing when you steal my
daughters bike to get back to the warbirds campground when I'm not driving
you across the flight line at 1:30 AM. Maybe I should put the pictures of
you at the campsite on the Matronics photo-share to show how good you
really have it. Of course sitting in the red-tail for about half an hour
makes it all worth while, at least I can say I SAT in a Mustang "C" model!

Larry, yes, the "nearly 3 gallons" is finish coat. Other than K38 on the
fiberglass parts, I primed with DX1791 self-etching wash primer which is
very light. The DPLF epoxy primer definitely adds weight and also orange
peel.

Paint weights haven't changed since 1996... gil in Tucson...
from the archives....
Guys, The manufacturer has the data.
The following is from the Sterling Aviation Application Guide. Dry film
paint thicknesses can be measured using a micrometer, and probably should
be done during your practice work before painting your RV.
Sterling's Best paint system
U-1201 (MIL-23377 primer) 0.0007 inch coating 0.0093 #/sq. ft.
U-1000 primer 0.002 inch max. 0.0146 #/sq. ft.
U-1000 color 0.002 inch recommended 0.0258 #/sq. ft.
Total paint weight 0.05 lbs. per sq. ft.
Sterling's Good paint system
U-1201 (MIL-23377 primer) 0.0007 inch coating 0.0093 #/sq. ft.
U-1000 color 0.002 inch recommended 0.0258 #/sq. ft.
Total paint weight 0.035 lbs. per sq. ft.
Sterling's Economical paint system - not as good corrosion protection
M-3325 (wash primer) 0.0003 inch coating 0.0027 #/sq. ft.
U-1000 color 0.002 inch recommended 0.0258 #/sq. ft.
Total paint weight 0.029 lbs. per sq. ft.
