Hello-
Any advice, trials, tribulations about where to place
the DPU on an RV-8A?
My thoughts:
- Baggage compartment next to baggage door. (Lose
space for luggage - but easy access)
- Underneath baggage compartment floor - relatively
easy access
- Instrument Subpanel right in the middle above the
brake lines.
Thanks
Dag

I also mounted tmy DPU on the sub-panel right in line with the opening for
the display. That way I could simply remove the display and be able to see
the DPU to work on the wireing if necessary. As it turned out it was
necessary a couple of times and it worked out great.

Hi Wayne,
When doing layouts such as you mention I put down masking tape in the areas
that I will be inking.
I have used a bit more masking tape lately but I have spent much less time
trying to get the markings out of the aluminum etc. previous to priming.
There are no marks that have soaked into any kind of materials since I had
this idea that seems to have been so obvious to others.

It is almost certainly a lot of talk about nothing.... but you don't say what size
hole?? If it is less than 3/8" in diamter and relatively clean edged, then
no problem...

Date sent: Tue, 17 Jun 2003 07:48:37 -0500
Hi,
There's been some recent discussion on the RV-List about the pros and cons
of where/how to drill exit holes for the wiring to a stick grip (see below
for example). I have the Infinity grip on the front stick of my -8A and
the wire bundle is pretty big. I drilled a downward-angled hole just above
the pivot point on the front side of my control stick. Do you guys have
any recommendations on this? Have I significantly weakened my control
stick to the point where failure is a possibility during aggressive
maneuvering like acro, or is all this talk a bunch of worry about nothing?
I didn't see anything in the plans about this, so you might consider adding
some comments about the maximum size a hole can be and where you recommend
locating it for best structural integrity.
Thanks and best regards,

The Infinity grip cable is a little less than 5/16" in diameter. With agrommet
that makes a big hole. I drilled an angled 3/8" hole in the lower stick
segment and welded in a piece of 3/8" 4130 tubing which I had flared at
both
ends. That should take care of the stick strength and wire protection
issues.

I had 830 hours on my wings including flaps, ailerons, wing tips and landing lights.
My kit was a skin punched only 6A slooooow build. The new totally pre-punched
wings on the 9A should save 20% or so on time. I think you'll be looking
at around 650 hours.

I am trying to make some computations and plans. Can I get a quick reply from
those who have completed wings on which model RV you are doing, if it is a quick
build or not, and approximate numbers of hours to complete the wings? Thanks
in advance, Glenn in Arizona -9A emp.

Finished my 7 pre punched wings. According to my Kitlog Pro, which I kept a
very detailed record on, I had right at 340 hours. That was doing both
wings at the same time. Less than four months at 20 hours per week using
all air everything. If you have to ask what that means, you're not building
an RV:-)

David,
I just finished an IFR upgrade in my -6A and
fabricated a new panel. Both myself and another
builder used the following method with excellent
results.
The panel was painted with PPG. It was wet sanded
between coats and after the final coat using a Porter
Cable palm sander with 600 grit. The paint pooled
ever so slightly around the openings. The sanding
removed this material, along with any dust, leaving a
perfectly smooth, but dull finish.
The lettering for the panel was created using MS Word.
This allowed for multiple font sizes. With a simple
cut and paste, an entire 8 1/2 X 11 sheet was filled
with these markings. In the end, I had 3-4 copies of
each required marking on one sheet. This allows for
the mistakes in positioning the words that will
follow. Using a LASER printer, set to its highest
resolution, print out this sheet on decal paper
designed for a laser printer. This is available from
www.micromark.com, 5 sheets for around $6. They also
have a 'blotter' tool for around $3 that helps in
positioning the decals. If you have access to a color
laser printer, then you are not limited to black only
lettering. Just don't use the inkjet version of the
paper, nor an inkjet printer. The letters are then
cut out, 'break' the edge of each rectangle so that
each corner isn't a 90 degree edge, but two 45's very
close together. Soak in water per the directions and
apply to the panel. The blotting tool will make it
easier to position the markings while also helping to
remove excess water. For a straight row (switch
markings, breakers, etc, stretch a fine string across
the panel, raised slightly, to aid in alignment.
After all labels are on, the panel is ready for clear
coat. If you use a regular spray gun and shoot the
entire panel, the clear will form pools around the
decals while providing no coverage in the center of
the decal. To fix this problem, start the clear
process by very lightly airbrushing the clear onto the
decals using a hobby airbrush and many light coats.
When this dries, apply at least two full coats to the
entire panel. After this dries, carefully and lightly
wet sand any imperfections out. Be absolutely sure
that you do not sand through the clear and into the
decals. Finally apply a final coat of clear.
With the clear, the edges of the decals completely
disappear. You are left with a perfectly smooth
panel, whose labels appear to be printed directly on
the paint below. The cost was minimal, and the entire
finishing process from initial paint through the clear
coat took roughly ten to twelve hours of work, spread
over three days.
If have have any questions, just send me an email and
I'd be happy to answer them.

Tom is entitled to his opinion, but in my opinion you have made it even worse by
angling the hole. Now you have even thinner edges for a stress crack to develop.
IMO.

I haven't finished my wings. I still have to prime and rivet the bottom
skins and finish the tips, but so far I have 290 hours in them.

Subject: | Drilling Elevator horn using HS bracket and bearing as guide |

RE: Drilling Elevator horn to HS
I can't seem to figure this out. I am mounting empennage and controls for
final fit. Got HS on and fitting elevator to it.
I need to drill the upper AN4 bolt hole in the WD605 elevator horn. This is
shown on page 5PP and 27A. It appears to me to drill the horn using the
VA146 bearing of the HS as a guide.
The 1/4" drill bit does not fit through the VA146 bearing.
How is this drilled correctly?

I mounted mine in the baggage compartment next to the altitude encoder.
Easy access. Van's said to mount them behind the display. When you remove
the display you can then access it. I don't use my front baggage
compartment much and like the ease of access.

Larry, you don't want to put a drill through the bearing, this could damage
the bearing. The AN4 bolt should fit through the bearing just fine. What
you need to do it find a short piece of tubing that has outside diameter of
1/4" and find a drill that fits snugly in the inside diameter. This way you
use the short piece of tubing as your drill bushing. Once you drill through
the elevator horn, remove the elevator, enlarge the hole to a C drill, then
use a 1/4" reamer to finish the job.

I recall seeing or hearing some where that the remote activation switch is no longer
