Subject: | Hard IFR in RV's |
--> RV-List message posted by: "Jim Nolan" <jimnolan@insightbb.com>
Listers,
The RV's are quite capable of IFR. Especially if that's about all you've flown
in the last 1100 hrs. My training in 172's was awkward but I finished up
in a Piper 140 and that was more comfortable to maneuver.
Some one else touched on a point that was directly related to flying an RV
in IFR. Be prepared and have all material organized before you go.
Last weekend my wife and I flew to Wings Field, north of Philadelphia. It
was hard IFR from BVI and the ceiling was around 1000 ft. I had a clearance that
only a commercial pilot would appreciate and they were stacked up going into
Wings. The controller kept me in never-never land waiting on my turn. When my
turn came it was the GPS 6. I activated the approach but the IAF I was looking
for didn't pop up. I immediately told the controller that my GPS had went out.
He asked me if I had an ADF and I said yes. I tuned to the NDB without having
to look for the identifier, I knew the altitude I could descend to without
having to look it up, I knew the approach course was 65 degrees and I knew the
NDB was .9 mi from the runway without looking on the approach plate.
The controller cleared me for the approach and I busted out about 1180 ft.
(right) and made an uneventful NDB approach. The reason I was able to transition
to the NDB approach was because I had shot this approach into Wings five times
the night before we left for Philadelphia. I shot the approach on my computer
using the Microsoft Flight Simulator. The X-Plane software is nice but it
doesn't have some of the smaller airports.
So my advice is the same as some of the other guy's, be prepared. It's not
hard to do IFR if you are. It's only hard if you're unfamiliar with the airplane
and unorganized with your procedures.
BTW My GPS was right and I had mentally misread the information it was providing
me.

I was searching tonight for news on the crash investigation, and I found
your message boards. I followed many of the threads for hours, and decided
I'd better stop...it could drive me crazy by morning. =0D

I would like to give thanks to those who posted such kind messages about Dad
those who knew him, were instructed by him, perhaps some Young Eagles out
there who are flying today because his love of all things aviation was so
contagious. Your condolences and memories are so very much appreciated by
our family.=0D

I have to say that the second-guessing, back-seat flying as it were, is
entirely beyond me. Those of you who knew Jim...well, you know Jim. If
there was anything that could have been done on that takeoff, Dad was doing
it. Sometimes, there is just that "oh shit" moment, and nothing else. =0D

Boy Kirsten,
It was extremely thoughtful for you to make a post to us. We all ramble on
about things here on this rv list. We all think we know about this or that.
But a post like yours is simply moving and very appreciated and certainly
you DO know what you are talking about. In this time of healing for your
family, it matters a lot to us that his family knows the love of aviation
and is 'all right' with it. We could not as pilots ask for anything more.
That you took the time to read our ramblings, and respond to us, also shows
your appreciation for your fathers love of flight. We all thank you.
Thank you Kirsten,
Mike Stewart
6A pilot who only met your father a couple of times.

At the moment, the plan is to make the board tall and thin to fit
in the corner against the aft wall. I'm going to try to locate all the
forward-facing LEDs on the top and bottom and then put the regulator
section and the sideward facing LEDs in the center area. In this way, I
hope to make the unit "look around" a strobe placed in the center of the
front wall of the sheared tip. Also, I'm hoping to leave enough space
outboard for Bill VonDane's landing light fixture.
>>>>>> Sheared tip interior dimensions???? <<<<<<
Along those lines, are the interior dimensions of the sheared tips
the same (or at least similar) on all models? I need to know the height of
the corner and the width of the aft surface for each model so I can make
sure the board will fit them all.
>Are you also considering the challenge of the combined strobe and tail light?
Not at the moment, but Bill VonDane is working on some sort of
strobe system. Maybe he will figure out a nifty package deal that has a
strobe, landing light, and my LED position lights. :-)

Quite true. That's exactly what I'm doing.

Yes.
I started off by tightening them with box wrenches and then went back at
final assembly and used a click wrench and was horrified to find that
all the bolts were over-tight. As an aside, I had never used a click
wrench before - only dial wrenches - so I just about destroyed the first
bolt waiting for the wrench to limit the torque; I thought it would
simply quit turning at the proper torque. Now I know better; building
is truly a learning experience. Since many of the bolts had been
tightened to about twice the recommended torque (and I assumed that the
others had been overtightened during fabrication), I replaced all the
rib bolts and tightened them using the torque wrench to proper torque
just to be safe. I've seen in the archives a joke about tightening the
bolts 'til they start to fail, then backing off a turn - I'm not sure
how much overtightening would be necessary to cause the bolts to fail
and I don't want to find out, especially with the hard-to-reach rib
bolts.

Did you use a torque wrench on the rib to spar bolts on the wing? (Not
the spar to splice plates, spar to center section bolts.)

Subject: | RV's and IFR and cockpit organization |

Kevin,
Since the A/P is not coupled to the vacuum system I consider it backup for vacuum
gyro failure. I do have alternate static in the airplane.
With respect to autopilot failure, I did almost all my IFR proficiency training
without the use of the A/P so I know I can fly without one (though none of that
flying was in actual IMC) Here in LA most of the IFR work from Spring through
Fall is through a fairly benign marine layer. In that case there is always
the option of asking for a climb to VFR, then going over to one of the high desert
airports.
In the colder months the problem is that the freezing level often drops below
the MEA's. (LA is ringed by mountains up to 10,000') Then I just go to the movies.
With respect to someone's question about cockpit organization, I work with NOS
charts in bound form. Using Avery labels I create tabs on them for each airport
on the flight plan. The NOS plates fit on a small flat clipboard. The charts
are loose and inserted at the side of the seat. For writing clearances I
use large post-it notes on a kneeboard.
John Allen
Interesting write up. One question: do you consider yourself able to
handle single failures of some of the installed equipment? I assume
the answer for some of the failures would be to use the autopilot
(e.g. AI failure, or vacuum pump failure). What about an autopilot
failure?

Subject: | Engine installation mistake |
--> RV-List message posted by: "Bob Hodgson" <bob@hodgson252.freeserve.co.uk>
Hi List,
This is not directly RV-related but may be relevant for some installations.
I belong to a syndicate operating a Socata TB10 with a Lyc 0-360-A1AD. The maintenance
outfit finishing the annual connected the SCAT hoses wrongly; from rear
baffle behind cyl #3 to cabin 'warm' air inlet, and from exhaust muff to carburettor
(!) Consequently for about 5 hrs after we got it back it was running
in hot air and of course the performance was rubbish. (Never was very good compared
to the average RV, anyway!)
A senior instructor said he 'heard' detonation in the engine and predicted the
pistons would be fried, but all the engineers we've consulted say very unlikely.
I always thought it was impossible to hear in a light aircraft due to the noise
level.
But:
1 Checking carb heat on runup still gave power reduction on selecting hot air
(only 50 rpm or so), so presumably the air from the exhaust muff was still a
bit cooler than the 'proper' hot air.
2 Air that should be going to the cabin presumably cannot be so hot as to fry
the engine if sent by mistake to the carb?
Of course the maintenance company were very embarrassed and flew down immediately
to put the hoses back in the correct position (rear baffle to carb inlet, and
exhaust muff to cabin). Because of the dire warnings from the instructor, we
got them (and an independent engineer) to also do a borescope check in the cylinders.
All fine they say - cylinders very clean.
Questions -
1 Could connecting the hoses in this way really cause a problem like detonation?
2 Is lack of carbon always a good thing - the Sac.Skyranch book says lack of
carbon may be a sign of detonation having taken place . . .
3 If it wasn't detonation, what could it have been?
I'm reading the Skyranch book again for guidance, but do the engine gurus on the
list have anything comforting or otherwise to say on this?
Thanks a lot

there is always the option of asking for a climb to VFR, then going over to

The charts are loose and inserted at the side of the seat. For writing
clearances I use large post-it notes on a kneeboard.

Subject: | Formation Clinic Questions |
--> RV-List message posted by: "Doug Rozendaal" <dougr@petroblend.com>
All,
I have received several reservations for the Formation Clinic at MCW and
some questions, I will answer them here for the benefit of all.
Can 2 pilots fly one airplane? Yes (not at the same time ;-) )
My airplane has a small engine and is slower than most RV's can I still
participate? Yes, the flight lead should use a power setting that allows
the slowest airplane in the group to have some room to work.
Can I leave early? Yes You can participate in as much or as little as you
have time for, or are comfortable with. Saturday will be primarily 2 ship
practice pairing newer folks with experienced people. Sunday will focus on
4 ships for those that are ready for that and checkflights. Monday will be
focused on the large formations but there will most likely be folks around
willing to fly if someone wants to go and practice 2 or 4 ships all weekend.
I will post more information as it becomes available.
Tailwinds,
Doug Rozendaal
PS tell your spouse that The Clear Lake Arts Council has one of the best
juried Art Sales in the Midwest that weekend. Fed Ex is right across the
hiway from the airport and can ship home the treasures! You thought
airplane parts were expensive....

I believe it is no worse than running your engine with carb heat. Reduced
power but nothing more. It was running rich as hot air is less dense for
the same amount of gas.

No one is looking forward to dying,,,,,,,but.........we all are going
some day........an airplane is as good as any.....and probably better
than most.........but.........a persons chances are better of dying in
your sleep than an airplane, at least thats what the number crunchers
say........anyway, I just buried my wife and I would much rather her
death had been by airplane than "C", she loved flying.....

James good points too, however, today society is like
that everywhere...
Is always excuses for everything, no one takes
responsability for anything... today no one can for
instance fire any one for incompetence,, is of course
discrimination...
I deal with this every day,,, you see I deal with
the public also.;..an example, I talked to a Manager,
of a particular company, gave him the information
He needed, he repeat it, correctly, and told him that
the check will be mail the same day.
It was a check for $3,000, that one of my clients
needed.
Usually it takes for this particular company, 10
working days, for client to receive mail...plenty of time
You would think, that a guy making $80,000 a year
would be able to see that this simple thing is done...
Well: it was never done,, my client call me two
weeks later very upset (I don't blame it) had not
receive the check...
To make the story short, I had to call the president
the other manager etc... finally check was mail express
mail.....nothing bu excuses......I demanded they right
a letter of apology, and that they were at fault...
Excuses, excuses.,
Any how let me get back to my rv, more important than
work no?

IMHO the only way you will be able to "yank and bank" The Dynon into
submission is when one wing goes all the way south and the other north.
Only then will you exceed the velocities to confuse it. A few seconds after
the big dust cloud it will catch up to show just how bad the attitude really
is. :>)

Fot those of you on the fence wondering about whether you should go QB or SB
on the fuselage, here is a pic to furthur keep you on the fence or knock you
off.
http://rvflying.tripod.com/fuselage8.jpg
I got my fuselage exactly one week ago. I worked about 1/2 day last Weds.
on it, 1/2 day Thursday and all day Friday, Sat. and Sunday. This Monday,
Tuesday and Weds have been about 4 hour days. Now, I'll grant you I was
bachin it last Friday, Sat. and Sunday. All bulkheads are complete with the
tailwheel drilled for keeper rivets and AN4 bolts. I have completely
drilled the fuselage, it is ready to come back apart. I primed all the
bulkhead at there overlap points, only as I was low on primer at that time.
I will complete the priming after I talk it apart for deburring and
dimpling.
The center section, firewall and seat brace bulkhead are all complete. All
this is exactly one weeks worth of work. It was a lot time spent in the
shop, including rearranging the shop for fuselage work but this is what can
be done with this prepunched stuff if you stay at it. I'll grant you, I am
still a long way from QB status but I'll be there shortly. BTW, I've
already fabricated more parts in a week than I did on the entire emp. and
wings combined. Now it is time to buy more drill bits!!
My plan now is to use the bench to assemble the seat bulkhead, baggage
compartment ribs, floor ribs and center section. When I remove the fuselage
from the sawhorses, I will swap spaces with the two components so I can work
on both at the same time, ie, deburring and dimpling fuselage skins and
drill the center section. Trust me, there is reason to this
madness.............I am already buying instruments and looking for an
engine.......it WILL fly to Oshkosh in 2004.

Kirsten, first of all my heartfelt sorrow at your terrible loss. I had to
give a eulogy once for my best friend whose parents were directly in front
of me. My most dreaded fears, as a parent, surfaced in there is no loss
like the loss of a child. It can be extended from a child to the parent in
the same terms. Again, I am so very sorry.
I did not read all the post on this list concerning your fathers unfortunate
accident as the only people who truly know what happened were on board the
airplane. I am certain your father did everything in his power in an
attempt to be able to see you again. I, like you, never think about dying
in an airplane but if I do I would hope someone, somewhere might benefit in
a time of need from a lesson learned by my passing. That is, I truly hope,
the reason pilots discuss accidents. Your family, your community, the
aviation community and the RV community has suffered a terrible loss. I can
only extend to you my sorrow and a message that we as pilots try to take
something from an accident that just might save our life one day.
Again, through teary eyes my heart felt sorrow at your loss.

Speaking of the Sam Jame's cowl, will anyone be at Arlington that has one. I'm
getting ready for the finish kit and I'm considering this cowl.
Thanks.

Contact John McMahon in Gallatin, TN at 615-452-8742, he can tell you where
to get it. He is a nice guy who showed me the round aluminum inlet, that he
had fiberglassed into this scoop, that replaces the standard cowl inlet on
Van's air scoop. Please post the information back to this list. Sorry I
don't have his email address.

That guy makes it look easy on the fuselage. He works pretty fast. I
always remember him because we use to have a radar bomb scoring detachment
in Richmond, KY. I never went there but I knew a lot of guys that were
stationed there. Pretty country I'll bet. Get to leave here at 9 PM
tonight. Had to come in early for a Siemens sales meeting. Keeping my eye
on the Chalet. Just a couple of hours left. It is up to $5200 now. Not
sure what to do yet. I did put in for the three weeks vacation today.
Hopefully it won't get nixed. Physicists want me back by August 11th so
they can start their annual QA inspections on the machines. I'm really torn
between spending money on a trailer and going to Osh or just saving money to
spend on the plane. Can't think of any better year than this one for Osh.
If I was only going to go once in my life this is the year for it. Don't
think I would ever fly into that mess. The therapist that used to work here
that is in Rochester, MN. called me today and wondered what I was doing for
vacation this year. When I told her about Osh. she got all excited about me
coming up to there and seeing her. I wonder what her husband would think of
that idea. I wouldn't mind taking her out to lunch though. Lots of reasons
to go and lots of ways to spend money.

My Dynon EFIS-D10 was delivered this afternoon. Took it out of the box, nothing
connected hit the power button and miracles happened.
(I opted for the internal backup battery so it has its own power source).
I was so impressed with it. I pitched it up/down, bank it left/right and the attitude
indicator works perfectly. The altimeter function shows the correct altitude
at my house (1560 ft) even without any connection to an encoder.
I have not flown it yet but I know I will love it. My plane is IFR equipped with
2 coms, ILS, dme, Garmin IFR gps, fuel computer etc. but this EFIS is my favorite.
Had I known it earlier I would order this unit scrap a few of the traditional
instruments, save $ and panel space.

I just got my Dynon EFIS-D10. All I can say is that this thing is BAD ASS!
Take it out of the box, hit the power button, you're flying. Incredibly
responsive. Can't wait to yank and bank this thing into submission.

Hello,

Since I'm planning to buy my engine within the next couple of months, I was
happy to see the recent price drop on the Superior XP-360 - but now I see
that Mattituck has their own line of engines for experimentals, also based
on the the Lycoming 320/360 series:
http://www.mattituck.com/XE%20Program.htm
Furthermore, when coupled with their own "Precision EX" fuel injection
system instead of the Bendix, their 180HP IO-360 with a hollow crank for
constant speed props goes for $19,400. That's pretty tempting, as it's a
fair bit less expensive than a similarly equipped XP-360.
Does anyone have any experience with these engines yet? I guess I'd be
surprised if one has flown in a customer plane yet, but how was the
fit/finish? Has anyone here even seen one yet?
Thanks!
