Thanks. If you meant the low voltage warning light, I got that at Spruce.
But I assume you meant the Apollo ACU (annunciator control unit), which is
something that's required for the GX60 to be legal under IFR. I bought it
along with my radios, encoder, and CDI from John Stark. I believe
Mid-Continent manufactures the ACU it for Apollo.
The throttle quadrant is something I bought from Spruce, but I think Van's
sells the same one for $10 less -- Spruce charges extra for the friction
models whereas Van's doesn't...or something like that. Didn't realize at
the time I bought it that Van's has it too.

For my 8 I got some lead sheet from a plumbing supply store and used this as
you are suggesting using the steel.
Worked fine but messed up the paint some removing the tip. Elevators were
slightly nose heavey prior to painting.

I need help with a radio interference problem. I wired a friends 8 for him
last summer and everything seemed to work fine until he mounted his antenna's
last week. When he keyed the radio everything went haywire. The ammeter (Van's)
pegged, the manifold pressure dropped and the panel lights dimmed. When
I put the radio back on the dummy load, the problem goes away. I used RG-400
double shielded antenna wire. The antenna is located under the pilot seat and
is a bent wire type from Van's. I used shielded wire for the intercom and P
leads but nothing else. Can someone tell me where the most likely place to start
looking for this gremlin? I am an electronics tech but have zero experience
on aircraft. I need to fix this for him because he's almost ready to fly.
Thanks in advance

Saw a problem like this about 10 years ago on a Dragonfly.
Sounds like a ground problem with the gauges. The transducers need a good
ground and so do the gauges.

--> RV-List message posted by: "Dana Overall" <bo124rs@hotmail.com>
Like the ol saying warns, "it is best to remain silent and appear ignorant
than to speak up and remove all doubt", I am going to remove all doubts
here. I am not an electrical person, never claimed to be and will never be
even if I stay at the Holiday Inn Express. Anyway here goes:
My electrial wiring will be coming from my wing tips via this 1/2" ID
conduit,
http://rvflying.tripod.com/q2.jpg
Outboard on the wings will be position light, strobe and landing light.
I'll think about a com in one and a nav in the other. Is there anyway to
get all the wiring through this conduit. I will also have a trutrack that I
am assuming will have it's own flexible conduit installed through a couple
lightning holes.
Next question: I am assuming as wiring exits the above conduit it will pass
through this outboard snap bushing
http://rvflying.tripod.com/q4.jpg
I am using a manual elevator trim so, once again assuming here from the
control systems layout drawing, that one of the center bushing in the the
spar center section is going to get used up by that cable. In doing that,
only one bushing will be available for for to aft routing of wiring. I will
only have a PTT and frequency flip flop on my stick. Aft will be strobe
box, position light and trutrack altitude hold. If I do install antennas,
they will be under the pilot center section.
Since there are only four snap bushing in the center section, two outboard
and two inboard, what do you think, will I need to run some wiring aft from
those two outer most center spar section snap bushings and Unibit these aft
center section floor ribs for snap busings to reroute them inboard
http://rvflying.tripod.com/q3.jpg or simple keep going aft. I already
drilled out the optional snap bushing holes from the 706 buldhead aft? Man,
that was a long and wandering sentence. These optional holes are on the
passenger side of center as the manual elevator cable takes up the pilot
side bushing.
I really want to get all this stuff finalized before I rivet the first piece
of the center section together. Once again, sorry for what might appear
ignorant but I am not electrical. I throw the switch, if it doesn't come on
I change the bulb. Really learning a lot from Electric Bob, but still have
a long way to go. I know I just threw a lot out there, but I feel like a
kid on his first day at high school....so many things to remember but so
many pretty girls (fuselage) to look at.

Re the gentleman who wanted opinions on radios, here's mine:
If you are going with a single radio setup, you can not do better than a UPS
SL40. It is light, works great, and the people are fantastic to deal with.
I purchased mine used, missing a small part. I called UPS and tried to
order the part. The gentleman on the phone said "You can't order that
part". I thought, oh crap, here we go with all the same s_it I used to get
from King. Then he laughed and said, I'll ship it to you for nothing. Just
tell others how well we took care of you.
So I guess now I'm telling.
Because the UPS is computerized, you can set things like squelch,
michrophone gain and other items while sitting in the plane with the radio
on. Much better than twisting pots on a King and then resetting.
In addition UPS is very "experimental friendly". King is very experiemental
UNFRIENDLY . UPS has the installation and troubleshooting docs right up on
their web page for all to download.
When I had my king in my plane, I was told that only authorized dealers had
access to the docs.
Re: Intercoms. I have had a NAT AA80 in my plane for about a year. I love
it. Nice product and also great service. Since I fly an RV-4, the intercom
is even more necessary than in a side by side RV. The NAT is one of the KEY
items that makes for an enjoyable flight for my passengers.

Sounds like there is a short to ground from the antenna. Did you make your
own BNC connectors for your wire? What kind of connectors did you use? If
you have any contact with the inner portion of the wire to the outer portion
(barrel) you could send signals throughout the aircraft ground. Best way to
isolate this would be to take the coax off of the back of the radio, then
key the mike. If everything doesn't go haywire, you found your problem in
the antenna wire. I'm no wiring or electrical expert, but I play one on TV,
so your milage may vary.
Oh yes, one other thing, did his antenna mounting have a large ground plane
to mount to? Was it mounted to a skin with a doubler to spread the ground
plane out from just the screws of the antenna?

Paul Besing's reply should solve this problem.
When the mike is keyed power is transmitted to the antenna tip to be radiated to
the air. So it seems that the power flow is all screwed-up and messes up with
the aircraft electrics. DON'T key that mike too much until this problem is solved;
you can burn the radio finals.

If you need to key the radio to fault-find, find your local radio ham and
borrow a dummy 50 ohm RF load.
Hook this up to the output of the transmitter, then the transmitter output
components will be safe......

I guess what is really frustrating here reading this stuff is that I keep seeing
it referred to as VAN'S gauges. This happens to anyone's gauge if things are not
properly grounded and shielded. Not just a gauge that was bought from Van's.

Dana,
Those of us who know you know that your doubt was gone long before that
post.:)
If you can get a 3/4 in now. Go ahead and do it. THe first coax you run down
there when moving some antennae after hundreds of hours of flying cause you
want 2 more knots, and you will wish you put a bigger PVC in there.
Don't get too particular on the "4" bushings you have installed. If it takes
8, then put 8 in. Long as your leaving most of the material, you will be
fine. Put more bushing, and wire passes than you think you need. You just
might use em one day.
Ask me how I know.

control systems layout drawing, that one of the center bushing in the
the
spar center section is going to get used up by that cable. In doing
that,
only one bushing will be available for for to aft routing of wiring. I
will
only have a PTT and frequency flip flop on my stick. Aft will be strobe
box, position light and trutrack altitude hold. If I do install
antennas,
they will be under the pilot center section.
Since there are only four snap bushing in the center section, two
outboard
and two inboard, what do you think, will I need to run some wiring aft
from
those two outer most center spar section snap bushings and Unibit these
aft
center section floor ribs for snap busings to reroute them inboard
http://rvflying.tripod.com/q3.jpg or simple keep going aft. I already
drilled out the optional snap bushing holes from the 706 buldhead aft?
Man,
that was a long and wandering sentence. These optional holes are on the
passenger side of center as the manual elevator cable takes up the pilot
side bushing.
I really want to get all this stuff finalized before I rivet the first
piece
of the center section together. Once again, sorry for what might appear
ignorant but I am not electrical. I throw the switch, if it doesn't
come on
I change the bulb. Really learning a lot from Electric Bob, but still
have
a long way to go. I know I just threw a lot out there, but I feel like
a
kid on his first day at high school....so many things to remember but so
many pretty girls (fuselage) to look at.
Thanks gang,

All,
They say, we "pilots march to the beat of a different drum." Too often we are
unable to find others who can hear the music. Knowing full well there are many
here who can hear the music, I trust you will oblige me my story and answer
my question.
My nephew, Daniel, (son of wife's brother) is 16 and came to Iowa to spend some
time with Grandma & Pa and Aunt Chris & Uncle Doug.
The mission was to get him soloed while he was here. It would have cost more to
buy insurance to solo him in my L-2 than to rent a Cherokee from the FBO so
out of kindness to the L-2 we chose the Cherokee.
I have been an Instructor for many years, I have signed off several logbooks for
Commercial rating, Multi-engine ratings, B-25 type-ratings, slapped people on
the back and said, "go have fun" in a Mustang, but I have never, ever, in my
entire Instructor life signed the back of a Student Pilot Certificate.
It was not scary, I was more concerned about sending a 16 year old downtown in
our company van. He did great, I knew he would and on a beautiful July night as
the sun was growing orange in the west and hot air-balloons floating across
our lake, I watched him fly 3 circuits, we trimmed his shirt tail, opened a bottle
of non-alcoholic Champagne with a screw top and took pictures that we will
send to his parents.
What a great day! What do other people do on a Saturday while we are listening
to the music????
Tailwinds,
Doug Rozendaal
BTW I almost forgot my question, I need to send him home to Houston to find a
flight school on the NW side of town. A down home kinda place where taildraggers
are welcome, there is an airport dog, and they hire 16 year old kids to wash
and fuel airplanes. Any suggestions?

Oh man, this just warms my heart. It's stories like this that make America
great. Maybe I'm just a sentimental type of guy, but seeing a youngster
living a dream, with a skilled and supportive uncle there to help make it
so, it's just....well goll darnit...downright neat.
Well Done, Doug. Now, if I can just figure out how to join that cadre of
back-slapped new Mustang drivers....
