If you read the FAR's you will see that the basic flight instruments are
still required, unless it is a turbojet aircraft. All of the aircraft you see with
these EFIS type instruments still have the AI, HI, and TC tucked in someplace
unless they are a turbojet, in which case they will have an AI someplace.

It is my opinion that blindly following the plans is not a good idea in
this, or any other, area. Use the rivet length that is needed. The plans
will usually give you a starting place to figure it out.

Gang, thanks for all the online and offline emails on the different
qualities of the A1F6D. Those of you who have these obviously swear by
them. Time to pay for a tear down. If it's not the one, all I'm out is the
A&P charge which will be cheaper than a trip to
Maine.................nothing against Maine as I'm sure when the RV is
finished (next year!!) it will visit Maine.
Thanks again gang.
BTW, I've got two "Friends don't let friends fly plastic airplanes" T-shirts
for Oshkosh. Will wear one to the informal get together for the plastic
airplane I built in a privious building life. Can't wait to ruffle some

Second flight this morning. This morning I was kind to the Dynon and did not
assualt it with acro, but rather flew it like an IFR airplane and it worked
great!!!
The speed envelope on the RV is so wide and the display is so accurate that
much of what I percieved last night as pitch wandering was really airspeed
(read pitch) changes.
The bank still wanders on the ground in turns and only a degree or two in
flight, but again, the screen allows you to see EXACTLY what level is and
you want it to be PERFECT and and it almost is!
I will probably have a nice backlit Horizon for sale soon! I am pretty
happy with it right now. More to follow.

The Dynon D-10 has all these instruments on one display, which meets
the literal requirements for our aircraft all by itself. If you are
aware of any FARs that would require backup flight instruments for
homebuilts, please educate me.
The FARs applicable to homebuilts don't say anything about separate
instruments, the way I read them. Just another case where simply
meeting the regulatory requirements is not enough to provide an
acceptable level of safety. You need to add a good measure of common
sense, as the guys writing the regs couldn't foresee every
circumstance.
Now, if we are building a FAR 25 Transport Category aircraft, then
FAR 25.1309 pretty much requires backup displays for critical
functions.

Sorry to hear the sexy box is not 100% what we were hoping it would be. I wonder

I agree with the others. The rivet length you need will vary. Sometimes
you just need a longer rivet. We all dimple/countersink etc to differing
levels. Even from rivet to rivet there is bound to be some minor variation.
Use the rivet length that gets you the results you need. I even ordered
extra rivets (longer) than what came in the kits for just that reason.

I had no trouble at all meeting the I 1/2 + diameter ratio between shop-head
and rivet body on all my wing skins as called up on the plans (1994
vintage). I don't know what the present RV-4 plans call-up, but on the -6
the spar web is .040" thk mat'l, whereas most of the ribs are .025" and a
few .032".-- A .032" skin with a .040" web used with -3.5 rivet will just
(theoretically) make it by .007" if squeezed perfectly, not including primer
thickness.-----Use the -4 rivet!

Doug,
I was told to only taxi as fast as I can walk. You must be really going
fast on the ground to cause bank angles during turns. You must be hard on
tires and brakes too. :-)

A friend at the hangar is wiring up his Dynon encoder functions to a KT76
Transponder. The encoder has a "strobe" line out. The old Ameriking
encoder manual said to put this line to ground when using a KT76.
Is this the case with any encoder and should the Dynon "strobe" line also be
grounded? We're guessing so, but anyone with some knowledge here that can
point us right would be appreciated.

Bill, sorry my first post seemed to little short and trite for my liking.
Sorry if it came across that way. Dynon has been very upfront with it's
customers concerning the heading function not working properly. Anyone who
buys now knows it is not a working part of the unit. There appears to be
overwhelming satisfaction on other boards for the Dynon unit as a whole.
Sure everyone always would love to have something included in any instrument
that is not there already. To say it is not what people were hoping for may
be stretching it a little, once again, there appears to be overwhelming
satisfaction at this point.
I talked with Greg at SNF. His unit will be nice and perform accordingly I
am sure. With that said though, there is a substantial, and it is
substantial, difference in the price of the unit. Sure if I were "King for
a Day" I would install a new whiz bang new IO360 CS will all the goodies,
junk this old technology Garmin 430 for a couple new UPS CNS80's coupled the
most unbelievable approach coupled autopilot.........and a great CD player.
But, cost is factor and while Greg's unit will be nice I can get the Dynon
and use the difference in upgrading and engine, for example.
I didn't mean to be so short with my first post...........or so long winded
on this one.

I found that I sometimes needed to substitute a longer rivet than called for in
the plans because the rivet did not extend 1.5 times the rivet diameter beyond
the hole before squeezing. I hand-filed a notch in a small piece of 1/8" thick
aluminum so I could check this and avoid having to drill out a rivet that
formed a shop head that was less than 1/2 a rivet diameter high. The vast majority
of the rivets called for were OK, but occasionally they would be too short.
When this would happen, I'd check that the pieces were fitting together without
gaps & if so, go with the longer rivet.

According to Dynon tech support the strobe connection is just grounded if
there is no corresponding connection on the transponder.

Rather than just take all kinds of pictures, I found that asking each owner,
"whats neat, unusual, or cool about yours?" What is different that you would
do again.
Take pictures of that stuff.
For example. I REALLY like my arm rest and center console. Not a real big
deal, but a picture of one of these that another builder has done is worth a
thousand words when trying to replicate. Maybe you didn't think of an arm
rest. I dunno... but the point is each plane has a unique quality or 2 that
is worth noting as you build and may make all the difference day to day.
Don't just mull around the real beauties. Go off the beaten path and see
what the average joe has done and ask them that question. Then you will have
some great pictures to take home.
I saw a pair of welded handles on a roll bar that I am so glad I put in.
Getting in and out w/o using them is a bear. With them is a piece of cake.
Just a little item that makes all the difference day to day.

Subject: | For Sale: 70x71 Warnke Prop for 160HP RV-4/6 |
--> RV-List message posted by: "jcobb@guardpilot.com" <jcobb@guardpilot.com>
FOR SALE: 2-blade, wood, 70x71, Warnke Propeller
The prop has about 500 hours and is in good condition. It performed very
well on the airplane with a consistent cruise speed of 160 KTS at 75% power
at 8K feet and a gross weight climb of 1500fpm. I am moving back to the
southeast and have opted for a composite (Catto) prop for better weather
resistance.
The prop is available for pick-up at DVT (Phoenix, AZ) now, or it will be
moved to MGM (Montgomery, AL) in a few weeks. Or you can pay shipping
anywhere.
Make an offer.

Darwin, as another poster said..........head north young man, head north.
You will run into more RV's than the man upstairs made clecos for (poor
sentence structure but the truth).
BTW, your 512 card won't be enough, and "almost complete 7" what, did the
guy work on it for a year and give up...............sorry, couldn't resist.
See ya all thar.

I read the FAR's the same way as Kevid does tonight. The literal read for
experimental indicates the Dynon satisfies the required instruments
incorporated within the unit. For IFR a pitot static and altitude reporting
requirement exists but with gray code being transmitted by the Dynon this
will be something that some shops may balk at. Now from and safety
standpoint, the inclusion of an airspeed indicator, TC, VSI for tendencies
and maybe ALT would be mandatory.......in my book. The Dynon appears to
satisfy the reg. requirements. As my wife will quickly point out, I am
wrong on most occasions. If so, please put me in my place. I'm a big boy,
I can take it.
Man, I'm looking forward to Oshkosh hangovers:-)
