Well,
while lying there in bed wide awake waiting for the new toy to arrive it
occured to me that there may be a gotcha in this unit. But before I describe
it I need to preface that I am theorizing here as I don't have the actual
unit to test this.
But, if one were to trim out at say 70kts level pitch and throttle, then
engage the Altrak and go to full power, then at 170kts one could disengage
the Altrak to see if the wings would come off. So my question is does the
drag or break out release let go when an aircraft is more than say 20kts out
of trim with respect to throttle setting? Or if this is adjustable, what do
you guys think would be a good setting for this. The test would be set it at
some altitude and add power, when the aircraft accelerates more then the
desired "setting" speed it should start slipping and the aircraft should
start climbing.
The issue is caused by the fact the power sets altitude and climb rates and
pitch sets airspeed, but the altrak causes you to use pitch for altitude. So
if you have significant throttle changes while engaged in alt hold then it
might get dicey when disengaging.
My intent here is not to bad mouth anything, I really don't know if this
could be an issue, but obviously I would like to know.

They saw my original post and replied privately. Dynon can reproduce the
bug and said it would be fixed in a future software version.

Wheeler, I'm not picking on you specifically, but why are so many
questions directed at the 1000 plus listers that could be simply a call
or email directly to the manufacturer? I suspect Jim Younkin could
answer this in his sleep.

Does anyone have experience with both the 12 Lb ring and the 12 lb balancer
sold by Mark Landoll. I'm going to put one of them on my RV-4 and I'm not
sure if I should go the extra $300 and put on the balancer. My primary
reason for adding the part is to get some weight up front, I'm running a
wood prop and lightweight starter and could use some extra weight up front
when carrying a passenger to reduce pitch sensitivity. If the balancer
makes a big difference in vibration and idle speed i'll put it on.

I had the same thoughts one night! Here is what I did, just because, I
would trim the aircraft for strait and level before setting the althold.
every now and then I would check the trim by turning off the unit. Since
this was not the trim sensitive unit I thought this was a good thing to do.
Yes the unit has a break out force, and just to keep from "ripping the wings
off" I always had the sick under control at the time of release. You can
also feel the trim and the resistance the unit is placing on the controls
before replace.

--> RV-List message posted by: "Elsa & Henry" <elsa-henry@darlor-watch.com>
I also have Van's 30 amp alternator, but with the 4 inch dia. pulley as
obtained from Spruce some time ago. My engine is an 0-320 with the 149 tooth
ring gear and I am using a Gates 37" x .380" drive belt that fits just fine
with that pulley. Using the mounting brackets supplied in Van's kit, I found
that to align the alternator with the engine pulley, I had to install a 1/8"
thk. washer (fabricated of aluminum) between the pulley and the shaft hub's
shoulder.
An automotive impact wrench (as used by tire jockeys) is required to remove
the nut holding the pulley on to the alternator, wrapping it with an old
V-belt to hold it stationary while doing so. the same procedure is done to
re-install the nut over the new pulley.
Cheers!!------Henry Hore

George/Becki,
I'm building an RV-8A which I plan to install one Jeff Rose electronic
ignition on. Funds are tight so I can not afford to purchase the unit
right now. Currently, I am wiring my project while I accumulate enough
cash to purchase my finish kit. I need to know the current draw, proper
gauge of wire for the power feed, etc. to accomodate installing the
electronic ignition later on. Do you know where I might obtain a copy of
the installation manual for this product? Jeff is a small business and
doesn't have a web site with manuals online for download. Could you
suggest how I might obtain this info?

I am noticing a sudden drop in rv-list message count. I have received

this just an brief communal time out on the part of all or at least most

I see a reduction in the volume of messages too. I was wondering if
everybody was so sick of getting spam that they gave up on the list... I
know it doesn't come from the list, just email spam in general.
That said, I posted a message to the list a few days ago that never was
sent to my email address from the list. That has happened before in the
past. I looked at my sent mail and the address was correct. I know that
there are some messages that never get posted. I run a current anti-virus
program so I know my email is clean.

Call Jeff at 423-622-8825 and he'll sell you a manual for $15.00. If you point
out that you're a potential customer, he might send you one for free.
There was an Electroair EIS-1 electronic ignition in my RV-4 when I bought it
63 flight hours ago and it's worked fine. One caveat though, which Jeff can
give you details on: his electronic ignitions don't play well with Skytec starters.
Something about them both needing a lot of juice (current, I believe)
in the first few milliseconds of the start. I have an old Bendix starter, so
it's not an issue.
Scanning my EIS manual, it appears that the systme needs a 10A circuit breaker
or fuse. I'm sure Jeff can give you details.

I have a Landoll Harmonic Dampner on my RV-4/Lyc. O-320-B3A, 150 HP. This
engine is conical mount and the dampner cut vibration considerably. I also put
on
the steel aerobatic plate.
I am happy with it and would do it again.

Subject: | Maximizing Range |
--> RV-List message posted by: kempthornes <kempthornes@earthlink.net>
Why don't we check the archives? I'm sure there is more but I got
interested by this web site pointed out by Randy Lervold
http://www.auf.asn.au/groundschool/umodule2.html#vspeed
I didn't know there was a V speed abbreviation for best range speed. This
describes it as L/D max where altitude is such that power is at about 55%
with full throttle. Of course, winds, wobbly headings and altitudes etc
need to be considered.
I was thinking my RV6a was max L/D at about 110 knots IAS. Not too slow if
done at 55% & WOT. Under such conditions engine could be leaned just
short of quitting.

Hi Listers,
A couple of people today wrote to say that it seemed like there has been a
lower volume of traffic lately. According to the RV-List Digest for
yesterday, there were 43 messages posted, which is about normal.
The new SPAM filter went in a couple of weeks ago, so I always get really
nervous when people start saying traffic is down. If your message didn't
get posted, please use the "Trouble-Report" web form (Link at the bottom
of this message) to report the problem. *Please* include as much
information as possible about the message including exacting times it was
sent, and any bounces or returns you might have gotten.
Speaking of the SPAM filter, its been working really well; over 75% of the
email sent to the Matronics server is classified as SPAM. There ought to
be a law...
Best regards,
Matt Dralle

Hello fellow listers
I decided that building a great website was harder than building my RV-8. So I
hired a graphic artist to spruce up the place a little. Of course, it has an

Also no flame intended, but this smacks more of editorialist than
journalism... AvWeb's defensive response sounds too much like they are
trying to make a "point" with total insensitivity to those directly
affected- FWIW, even I don't do a cut&paste when harvesting material for
my Chapter's newsletter- I ALWAYS edit any material for the suitability
of the audience (and to avoid blatant plagiarism), and try to leave the
"preaching" to the editorial page- AvWeb claims they are a "news"
service...............

I have some "Brand New" (in original packaging)
MIL-T-43435B Lacing Cord, Type 2 (Polyester / Hi
Temp), Finish C (Synthetic Rubber or Elastomer), Size
3 (50 lb min strength; 0.085: wide x 0.014" thick).
This Cord is used extensively by avionic shops and
airframe manufactures to tie individual electrical
wires into bundles for their avionics, etc.
* Least expensive way to make wire bundles.
* Will not cut into wires like Dental Floss used
by some Builders, as it is "flat"
* Higher Temp Rating (-73 Deg C to 177 Deg C) than
Type 1 (-55 Deg C to 121 Deg C) that is
sold by Aircraft Spruce and Chief Aircraft for
$21 per spool.
* Each Spool contains 500 yards of White or Blue
Polyester Cord. (Share with other Builders)
* Excellent "Knot" retention.
* See: www.versatileindustrial.com/gudebrod.html
for additional info.
* Will sell for $15 per Spool - includes shipping
in the US.
If interested E-Mail me off line at:

3 (50 lb min strength; 0.085: wide x 0.014" thick).
This Cord is used extensively by avionic shops and
airframe manufactures to tie individual electrical
wires into bundles for their avionics, etc.
* Least expensive way to make wire bundles.
* Will not cut into wires like Dental Floss used
by some Builders, as it is "flat"
* Higher Temp Rating (-73 Deg C to 177 Deg C) than
Type 1 (-55 Deg C to 121 Deg C) that is
sold by Aircraft Spruce and Chief Aircraft for
$21 per spool.
* Each Spool contains 500 yards of White or Blue
Polyester Cord. (Share with other Builders)
* Excellent "Knot" retention.
* See: www.versatileindustrial.com/gudebrod.html
for additional info.
* Will sell for $15 per Spool - includes shipping
in the US.

When visiting Oshkosh I looked at every RV there. The vast majority had the
closures. The really nice ones had the glass work faired in nicely.
I chose to fair mine in for a few reasons, 1) I like the appearance, 2) Any
aerodynamic improvement is beneficial, 3) The weight gain is negligible 4)
The process can occur a little at a time, i.e, work on it for a while then
move on to something else and come back to it when you feel like it. I'd say
the elevator and stab glass work, faired in and ready for primer, took a
total of about 6 hours over the course of a month.
