Has anyone noticed the cost of pitot tubes lately? They're almost double what
they were last year!! I've heard there is only one guy in town now so he can
charge whatever he wants.
If you're nearing the point in construction where you want to get one, I would
suggest salvage. If you can wait, Gretz Aero is working on making one but doesnt
have it ready yet.

Folks
Now I know that a stock 150hp Cherokee probably does not have the same level
of power(pronounced vibration) that many RV's have, but I've had good luck
with the lightweight starter for the past three years and about 450hrs. I fly
Young Eagles, so "lots" of starts with that starter for those 20min. intros.
Still working an that 6A. Some time down the road I'll have a chance to see if
my luck with Skytech will change or not.

At 71 hours I had a total failure of my Sky Tec starter. Sent it back to
SkyTec, it was still under warranty. They told me that the starter failed
due to kickback and that my mags needed to be timed, and warranty does not
cover engine kickbacks. It cost me $135 for shipping and repair.
Retimed mags put starter back on I0-360 A1A, it failed again after 90 more
minutes of flying, about 3 more starts. I now have a 35 year old Delco
Remy starter, never have any kickbacks, no starter failure, engine always
starts, no soloniod problems. I am happy!
SkyTec has told me that their starter does not work because I will not
properly time the mags. I had a qualified A&P with IA do it two times, and
the engine still kickbacks with the starter. SkyTec knows this is a
problem and they can not fix it, that is why it is not covered in the
warranty.
Yes I found SkyTec to be helpful and polite on the phone, but they refuse
to acknowledge the problem. But, they will repair the starter as long as I
pay for it.
Give me a good used Delco Remy any day! The Delco Remy cost the same as
repair work on the SkyTec.

Bob,
Does your starter arrangement ground any non-impulse mag during start
(i.e. required grounding strap on ACS keyswitch, toggles arranged to
lockout mag during starter engagement, etc)? If the non-impulse mag is
not grounded during start, you will get kickback and the lighter weight
starters can fail quickly.
Just askin'....

Bob,
Re your starter problem, I recall Ken Scott at Van's writing something about
the kick-back and timing problems in an RVator some time back. Suggest you
contact him for the information, as I can't remember the details because it
didn't apply to my engine as I also have the Delco-Remy unit going strong.

Hi Bill,
If you have fitted al the mechanics and wiring etc. and the last thing to be
done is rivet the skin on in prep for installing the windshield go ahead on
it.
If not and if you don't have any negative thoughts About fitting a lot of
mechanical and wiring stuff while laying upside down head first under there,
start riveting ......?
I have mine fitted but have left it off while doing all the stuff mentioned
above.
I think I would have died in there otherwise. Laying under automotive dash
boards is most likely how I got this damned arthritic back in the first
place.
I think out fitting behind and under the panel is the prime reason for hold
off on riveting the top skin.
Even then I just know I will have to go in there later for some reason or
other.
Happy building,
Jim in Kelowna

You did not mention if you are building a tip-up or slider canopy. I can
only speak for the slider.
I left mine un-riveted until I had my canopy frame in place. This gave me a
chance to trim the skin to match the contour of the rear canopy frame bows.
Also, make sure you have all your wiring runs that will go to the aft of the
fuselage in place so you do not have to crawl back there later after that
skin is on.
Hope this helps.

I have left the forward skin off and all ready did the panel and wiring. The
skin that's behind the baggage area is the one I am preferring to. Something
about mounting the slider that people have suggested that you leave the top
forward skin 6112 clecoed on until slider is fitted. Other than the cutting the
final shape of the skin which I can do with most of the skin riveted on. just
wondering what the other reasons might be. Thanks

What does the list think about putting the ELT in the wingtip of a metal
AC. It's the only place "inside" where it can radiate. It would seem
that the ELT would see the same deceleration as if in the fuselage. Also
the wings often survive better that the fuselage, particularly if they
are pulled off. The only problem I see is that the wingtip would have to
be removed once a year to change the batteries.
I have never seen this done so suspect that there MUST be something
wrong with it. :)

Jim,
It would be between you and your DAR over meeting this section
of FAR 91-207...
"(b) Each emergency locator transmitter required by paragraph (a) of this
section must be attached to the airplane in such a manner that the
probability of damage to the transmitter in the event of crash impact is
minimized. Fixed and deployable automatic type transmitters must be
attached to the airplane as far aft as practicable."
My interpretation would say no....

Hi Bill,
Well I guess I droped the ball on that one Bill. Sorry about that.
I fitted and riveted that skin before doing any of the canopy fitting on my
slider.
Maybe someone out there will have a rational for riveting after slider
fitting.

Bill, I'll try to take a shot at this...the windscreen support bar gets
anchored to the center rib by a couple of AN3 bolts, I believe. When you
mount the windscreen, you will also mount the support bar and then drill in
assembly with the center rib. Somewhere in here you need to slot the top
skin for the support bar. The top skin will come on and off several times
during this process...so don't rivet it on yet. Actually, I would wait as
long as possible before riveting this skin...you will need access for
wiring, etc. all the way to the end and it gets to be a real pain to get
behind the panel once the top skin is on. What you will find when you
finally rivet it on is that you will have to use lots of the MK 319 rivets
because access for a bucking bar is almost impossible in many places. You
will need to seal these rivets to make things water tight.
Hope this helps.

OK, I guess you meant the rear top skin....sorry, I thought it was the
forward top skin. Anyway, I went ahead and riveted the F-6112 prior to
fitting the canopy without any problems. You will probably need to trim
away a lot of the forward part where it curves as you fit the canopy,
otherwise you should have no problems. Actually, I don't think you can fit
the rear canopy skirts properly without riveting the F-6112 skin first.
Good luck.
