Bob,
My Dad used to say "fuel is an incedental"...not any more. I run Autogas in my
0-320 powered RV4 here in the US and figured last year I saved over $1000. I
fly alot...It's a good argument for low compression engines....Also I have always
liked the LOM engines after seeing one in Jim Ayers RV3. They are low compression,
run autogas, use a manual supercharger for higher MP and power, have
magnesium cases and cost almost 40% less than a lycoming. Do you see many LOM's
over there in GB?

Does anyone know of a source for statistics of the number of homebuilt
planes finished each year vs the number of spam cans sold every year.
And also the number of homebuilts flying vs the number of spam cans
flying? Just curious.

Jack,
I recommend you put a fuel filter or other pulse absorbing device between the flowscan
and the facet pump. For example, I've used the Fram G3 fuel filter for
several years. See the archives in the 1999 - 2000 time frame for a discussion.
The bottom line is the Facet pump (and to a lesser extent the engine driven
mechanical fuel pump) induce pulses in the fuel line which cause erratic readings
in the flow scan. The fuel filter, with some air trapped inside, acts
as a "capacitor" to smooth out the pulses so they don't impact the flowscan (as
much).

--> RV-List message posted by: jacklockamy@att.net
I'd like to install my fuel flow sensor (FloScan from Grand Rapids w/EIS-
4000) in the cabin tunnel running from the sparbox to the firewall (RV-7A).
I would install an in-line fuel filter just after the Van's fuel selector
valve, then the FloScan, inline up to the facet electric fuel pump mounted
inside the cabin on the firewall. Nice straight run, easy to maintain/access
and not located on the forward side of the firewall (heat).
Has anyone else tried this AND been successful? My only concern is when I
read that the 'wires' on the sensor must be mounted "UP" and with this tunnel
installation the wires would be horizontal.
Spoke with GRT this afternoon and they said the location and installation
sounded great but were unsure whether or not the having the sensor mounted
horizontal would cause bubbles to be created in the sensor thus causing a
possible flucuation/error in the fuel flow readings.
Comments and ideas welcomed.

I have a Lyc O360-A1A engine, and I am looking for the special flare fitting that
goes on the propellor governor adapter onto which you attach the steel line
to the front of the crankcase. The Lycoming part number is 74070.
This part is described as "elbow, 3/8 flared tube x 9/16-18 str. thd., adj 45 degrees".
If anyone has a spare fitting that they can part with, contact me directly.
Thanks,

I've got a brand-new Woodward governor (model 210776 - of mid-1996
vintage) which I'd like to trade for a brand-new McCauley governor, such
as Van's is currently selling.
The Woodward governor has a thicker mounting flange which will require
slightly longer studs on the governor pad. I'm installing this on an
RV-4 with a Lyc O-320. Since the engine is already mounted, I don't
have much room to work with, so I'd rather swap the governor than try to
change the studs in the limited space available.
Anyway, if someone would like to have a Woodward governor, this would be
a lot cheaper than buying one outright...

Subject: | [PLEASE READ] - Why Do I Have A Fund Raiser Each Year? |
--> RV-List message posted by: Matt Dralle <dralle@matronics.com>
Dear Listers,
I was thinking that perhaps I should explain why I have a Fund Raiser and
also take the opportunity to express why I think the List Services here
provide a far better experience than the commercial equivalents.
I use the List Fund Raiser each year to offset the costs involved with
running a high performance email list site such as this one. With the
annual support from the List members through the PBS-like Fund Raiser, I
have found I can run the entire site without having to inflect any of the
members with those annoying banner ads flashing up all the time trying to
sell Toner Cartridge Refills or other garbage nobody wants or needs. From
the comments I've received over the years regarding the Lists, the great
majority of the members really appreciate the non-commercialism of my List
systems and don't mind my 'go-team-go' banter once a year to encourage
members to support the Lists.
I believe that the Lists services that I provide here offer a great many
benefits over the commercial equivalents in a number of ways. The first
feature I believe to be particularly significant is that you *cannot*
receive a computer v*rus from any of my Lists directly. I've been on a few
other List servers and have been unfortunate enough to download infected
files people have innocently or not-so-innocently included with their
posts. This just can't happen with my Lists; each incoming message is
filtered and attachments stripped off prior to posting. I provide a Photo
and File Share feature that allows members to share files and bitmaps with
other members and everyone can be assured that these files will be
prescanned for any sort of v*rus before they are posted. Safe and
simple. Also, with this photo and file sharing technique, the Archives
don't get loaded up with a huge amounts of bitmap "data" that slows the
Archive Search times.
Another feature of this system is the extensive List Archives that are
available for download, browsing, and searching. The Archives go all the
way back to the very beginning of each List and with the super fast Search
Engine, the huge size of the Archives is a non-issue in quickly finding the
data you're looking for. Another feature of the Archives, in my opinion,
is that they have been primarily stripped of all the useless email header
data and all the other header garbage that seems to build up in a typical
email thread.
I have received an extremely positive response from Listers regarding the
List Browse feature and the consensus is that the format and ease of use is
outstanding. Members report that having the previous 7 days worth of
messages on line for easy browsing and sorting is hugely beneficial. And
again, as with the real time distribution of List email, the messages are
stripped of all the unnecessary email headers and potentially dangerous
v*ruses.
I've been running email Lists and services under the matronics.com domain
since about 1989 starting with RV-List and 30 guys who I knew and who where
also building RVs. It has grown into over 40 different aviation-related
Email Lists and an associated web site that receives over 10,000,000 hits
each year!! Additionally, the List email system forwards well over
90,000,000 (yes, that 90 MILLION) email messages to subscribers each
year! With all the dot.bombs these days, I think there's a lot of value in
supporting a service that has gone the long haul and is still providing and
improving a high quality service at a price that's nearly free.
I have to admit running these Lists is a labor of love and I hope it shows
in the quality of the experience that you receive when you get a List Email
Message, Search the Archives, or use the List Browser. The Lists will be
here for a long time to come. If you just want to lurk a while for free,
that's great and I encourage you to do so. If you use, appreciate, and
receive value from these Lists, then please support them during the Annual
List Fund Raiser!

Scroll down to the bottom of this (or any RV list) email and search the

Guys, a few weeks ago Ross Mickey posted some stuff to the List that he couldn't
get the Grand Rapids EIS 4000 engine monitor to read the tach signal from the
Lightspeed Plasma II ignition system. I have this combo so I asked Greg Toman
about it and here is his response. If you have this combo give him a call
and he can talk you through this quick and easy mod to get it to work (or if you're
ordering it new, and are using LSE PLasma II's, he can ship it this way
from day one).
--Mark Navratil

RV-8A N2D finishing with EIS 4000 and dual LSE Plasma II's....
Msg from Greg Toman 11/14/03:
This isn't a problem. There is a resistor and capacitor in the tach circuit that
you can remove youself with our help over the phone. When this is done, you
will be able to use the tach output from the Plasma II.
Don't worry...by now it seems like I have encountered every problem you can imagine!
That is an easy one, but it is one of the very rare cases where our(unmodified)
tachometer input circuit is not compatible with someones tach output.

You must have just recently signed on to the list. Welcome. There has been
a lot of discussion lately on these two items. Are you familiar with the
archives? If not, go to the Matronics search engine and type in Dynon and
Blue Mountain. You will get a lot of hits, some as recent as yesterday, and
you should find what you are looking for, maybe more. Good hunting.

Jack,
There is much info on the Dynon EFIS, Blue Mountain, etc, in the archives.
The new EFIS technology is a terrific thing! Several Dynons are now flying
in RV's and seem to be meeting expectations.

get their engines on the market. If so, the cowling on the Glastar is first rate.

A lot of neighborhoods don't allow the owners to park Boeing 707s
outside
their homes, which is why actor John Travolta moved to Jumbolair, near
Ocala.
OCALA -- It's not just another housing development, as you can tell by
the
1.4-mile airstrip and the Boeing 707 parked next to one of the houses.
Located in the Central Florida town of Anthony, just north of Ocala,
it's
called Jumbolair, and it's the new home of John Travolta -- '70s TV
phenom,
film superstar, Oscar-nominated actor, sex symbol, accomplished pilot,
doting husband and father.
After several years of whispers about his building a house here, the
49-year-old actor has taken up residence in his nearly completed
mansion.
Travolta is flying daily from Ocala to Tampa to shoot "The Punisher," an
action movie based on the comic book, set to be released next summer.
A lifelong love of aviation holds the key to Travolta's decision to
build
at Jumbolair.
During much of the 1980s, elephants used to roam Jumbolair's rolling
woodlands, safe from poachers and reckless intruders, thanks to Arthur
Jones, creator of the Nautilus line of exercise equipment, and his
then-wife Terri, who used to bring in African elephants and other
endangered creatures via the 1.4-mile airstrip.
Terri Jones-Thayer, who divorced Jones and married Jeremy Thayer, is
turning Jumbolair into an exclusive fly-in community. Although Travolta
is
the only big-name customer to buy in so far, other celebrities are said
to
have an interest, including NASCAR star Ricky Rudd.
Travolta owns at least two jets, a Gulfstream and a huge Boeing 707B.
Simply put, there aren't very many non-commercial airstrips where planes
of
that size can take off and land. Jumbolair, with its long landing strip
and
massive jet wash berms at either end, is one of them.
About a decade ago, Travolta had a home in a fly-in community near
Daytona,
but was sued by neighbors who claimed his jet airplanes were too big and
noisy for their facility.
The very layout of his new house is testament to Travolta's love of
flying.
It's located immediately off the main airstrip, and is designed so his
jets
can taxi right up to two outbuildings connected to the main structure,
which is shaped like a squat air-control tower. Travolta literally can
walk
out his door, under a canopied walkway and into the cockpit, open the
long
mechanized gate and be airborne in a matter of minutes.
According to the Federal Aviation Administration pilot database,
Travolta
is qualified in several types of single- and multi-engine aircraft, and
has
the highest pilot medical certification possible.
"We know that Travolta's an accomplished pilot. ... A lot of people fly
for
the pleasure of it, and he's one of them," said John Clabes, an FAA
spokesman. "If you have this many ratings on these types of
high-performance aircraft, you're obviously a good pilot."
In layman's terms, Travolta has enough experience flying large
multi-engine
jets that he could easily switch to piloting commercial airliners for a
living.
'Down to earth' guy
Through his intermediaries, Travolta has declined media requests for
interviews. But the star of "Pulp Fiction," "Grease" and "Face/Off" has
been anything but reclusive. He has been spotted eating at local
restaurants, working out at a public gym, even shopping for groceries.
According to numerous people who have met and spoken with him, Travolta
has
been very friendly, even gregarious, toward his new neighbors. Rather
than
living in a remote estate behind multiple layers of security, or smack
dab
in the searing public spotlight of Hollywood, the actor seems to enjoy
interacting with regular folks.
Ask Charley Marcum. The classified advertising manager for the local
newspaper, the Star-Banner, flies an ultralight -- a lightweight,
open-air
aircraft that resembles a hang glider with a seat and motor. Last month
he
and a buddy were flying over Jumbolair, where he hangars his craft, when
they spotted another ultralight. After flying patterns together and
practicing touch-and-go landings, they finally brought their ultralight
to
a rest. The other pilot rolled up, got out, shook their hands and
introduced himself as John Travolta.
"I asked him, 'What brings you to move to a place like this?'" Marcum
said.
"He said he loves aviation, and he enjoys being around people who share
that enthusiasm."
Marcum admits to being a little overwhelmed and starstruck -- at one
point
calling his daughter on his cell phone to let her speak with the actor,
who
cheerily complied -- but describes Travolta as very down-to-earth and
friendly.
The trio chatted for nearly an hour, mostly about planes.
Added visibility
Although "Punisher" and Travolta's most recent film, the military
whodunit
thriller "Basic," were filmed in Florida, local film production
officials
aren't holding out hope the actor will bring a major feature film shoot
to
his new hometown. The very appeal of Ocala is that it's far away from
the
hubbub of Los Angeles or New York, according to Jude Hagin, who heads up
the Real Florida Film Commission, which covers Marion and Alachua
counties.
"Mr. and Mrs. Travolta moved here because of that airstrip, and it's our
good fortune to have them as neighbors," Hagin said. "It probably gives
us
a little more visibility."
The lack of seasoned film crew members and large buildings are the
biggest
impediments to attracting a major film shoot to Ocala, Hagin said.
"Should
(the Travoltas) decide to film here, we are at their beck and call."
The "Mrs." refers to Travolta's wife of 12 years, Kelly Preston, a
well-known actress ("Jerry Maguire," "Twins") in her own right. They
have
two children: Ella Bleu, 3, and Jett, 11. Their Ocala property is
incorporated under the name Jett Bleu Estates, a combination of their
children's names.
Star sightings
Whatever private concerns Travolta and Preston keep for their home, the
actor has hardly been reticent to wander beyond the gated borders of
Jumbolair.
Travolta has been spotted dining at a number of Ocala-area restaurants,
including Hops, Red Lobster and the Ocala Ale House. Usually, the actor
shows up late in the evening, alone or with a single companion.
Occasionally, his presence has sparked an excited frenzy large enough to
reportedly require the presence of police officers to escort Travolta
away
from the potential mob of fans.
This past summer, Travolta caused a big stir when he entered the Red
Lobster on State Road 200. By the time he had finished his meal, a large
crowd had formed in front of the restaurant, and police had to smuggle
him
out the back. Travolta was about to depart, but paused when he heard the
story of MaKenzie White.
White, a 14-year-old freshmen at Belleview High School, had a bad
experience a couple of years earlier when a con man fooled her family
into
thinking he could introduce her to Travolta. White and her parents
waited
for hours at Ocala International Airport, and the girl was crushed when
she
learned it was all a hoax.
"Somehow (Travolta) had gotten wind of the fact of what happened to my
daughter," said White's father, Phil White. "He knew what had happened,
and
he felt terrible about it."
Travolta took a few minutes to meet MaKenzie and have his picture taken
with the young fan. "I can't even describe it. It was a
once-in-a-lifetime
thing," she said.
'Show him respect'
A calm, friendly demeanor is universally described by those who have
interacted with Travolta.
"One thing that impressed me about Travolta in the few times I've met
him
is that he doesn't put on a big facade. It's nice to see a star of his
caliber who doesn't put on a big air," said Tony Piccione, owner of the
Ritz Historic Inn, a popular Ocala entertainment venue. "He just seems
to
have a very friendly spirit about him."
That good nature, however, has occasionally been strained by overly
arduous
fans eager to see the famous star now shedding his light on Ocala.
Travolta
and his family have been forced to leave several area events because of
a
crush of fans -- something that worries film commissioner Hagin.
"We wish for people to just allow them their dignity, to live their life
and raise their children," she said.
Ritz owner Piccione, who recently chatted with Travolta while the actor
enjoyed a hamburger at Hops, echoes Hagin's caution, though he
understands
people's reactions.
"We're all the same. We're all intrigued by someone who's achieved that
degree of stardom," Piccione said.
"But it's a shame people can't show him the respect of just nodding to
him
to say hello rather than mauling him. If we don't treat this guy with
the
respect he deserves and let him have his life, he's going to leave."

And also the number of homebuilts flying vs the number of spam cans

I am going to use Mar-Hyde 5111 to prime the parts of my -8. The air
temp in my garage has been around the 35-40 deg F mark for several days
now - I don't expect it to be any warmer than that until spring time
(central Ohio).
I ordered an infrared heater that will hang from the ceiling to warm a
small area of the garage so I can do some priming. An infrared heater
warms the objects under it, but does not warm the air (other than the
heat radiating from the objects that are warmed, which will be minimal I
think). I am a little concerned about the air temperature - the
instructions on the can say the parts being painted need to be at least
65 deg F, but what effect might the 35-40 deg F air temp have on the
paint as it goes from the can to the part?
Thoughts?
Thanks,

All,
Does anyone know of a "big-city" local source for high quality fiberglass/filler

Also, I have seen some great tip (emp, wing) tutorials on recent websites that
I can no longer find (or remember where they were). If anyone has some good details

Hi Phil,
I have been using Mar-Hide to prime various interior parts and pieces. I am
building a 6A in my garage which is heated but gets quite cool in the cooler
part of the winter. the one thing that I ran into was that the spay can
nozzle seems to plug to the point of uselessness if I try to spray with the
can at the garage's cool temps.
I do not like to spray indoors as the garage in the lower part of the house
as the fumes from the Mar-Hyde smell, are quite likely noxious and permeate
the house.
I now warm the Mar-Hyde spray can and parts to somthing above room
temperature (about 80 degrees) and spray outdoors. I then bring the painted
parts back into the garage to finish drying. This reduces the overspray in
the shop to zero, brings the stink down to acceptable levels and all but
eliminates the spattering and plugged nozzle syndrome.
I will experiment with a heat lamp in the outdoor paint shop (driveway) to
see if I can let the parts gas off longer outdoors and eliminate the paint
smell even more. Not many more parts for me to paint but worth finding out
about for future use.
I hope this helps,
Jim in Kelowna

As I understand it, since the goal has been met, it won't be the same,
but both EAA and Phillips will be supporting YE flights in the future.
It's been a very successful program ..... for both kids and pilots

From the EAA web site:
"So does that mean that it's over and we stop flying Young Eagles? No.
The program will continue into the future because you have told us how
important it is to remain involved with young people, working together
to build aviation's future. Young Eagles has become a part of the very
fabric of EAA. Our mission is too significant to stop now."
"The Young Eagles program will continue to provide a high-quality,
satisfying experience for young people. In addition, your headquarters
staff will strive to provide the tools and support our Young Eagles
desire, as they explore all the world of aviation is able to offer them.
Young Eagles will build aviation's next century."

I find that a heat gun will do considerable help if the primer does not kick off
because of low temperature. Just take care not to concentrate the heat and blister
the finish.

Scott,
Try Googling (is that a word?!) to West System's website and seek regional
dealers there.

Thanks for the feedback. I found the West Systems site and there are three locations
that carry their products in town (Austin)!
Thanks again.

Good Day to everyone!!! Today a follow RV builder was here to look at
my project and was concerned that I did NOT have provisions to vent my
heat muff when the heater is not in use. He seemed to think the exhaust
needed some kind of cooling. Is there anyone out there flying that
does not have these provisions? Thanx

Hobby,
These are the same fittings used for the mechanical fuel pump. The best deal going
is to get them from Wick's Aircraft. I just ordered some for myself and another
builder. the 45 degree fitting is part number 6802-6-6. Cost is $3.12
each. Check prices elsewhere and you'll find that this is a real deal.
