Thanks go out to my Columbia SC friends (James Clark, Patty Gillies and Ken Harrill) for giving her the $70k ride that evidently has set the hook. T'was the night before Christmas, and all through the garage, More and more plane parts, now a new fuselage! The rivets were placed in their cabinets with care, We hoped that even more plane parts soon would appear. The young one was nestled, all snug in her bed, While visions of flying high danced in her head! And ma' with her crafts, and I with Van's book, Had just settled down, to dream and to look. When out in the garage, there arose such a clatter, I sprang from my chair to see what was the matter! Away to the garage, I flew through the air, Set off the alarm, and caused quite a scare! The light in the garage reflected on the wings of that plane, It brought tears to my eyes that I could not explain! When, what to my wondering eyes should appear, But a Van's aircraft mechanic with all of my gear! That wonderful mechanic was no Old St. Nick, But promised that we would build that plane quick! The canopy, seats, avionics, propeller, He even brought Lycoming, I love that young fellow! He said not a word as he went to his task, Bucking and riveting, what more could I ask? With such quick, perfect rivets, would've taken me years, Let me know that I really had nothing to fear! And laying our tools aside, we arose, "It's time to take this thing up, I suppose!" We sprang to my plane, gave the prop it's first spin, Taxied into the cul de sac, then into the wind! And we loudly exclaimed as we flew out of sight, "'Tis a happy Christmas, indeed, this plane sure flies right!!" It looks like the hinge pins would be a nuisance. Mick, Cost may be among the considerations here. Camloc kits can get relatively expensive. You do have a couple of options though. As an inexpensive alternative, I installed the hinges per plans except where the (curved) upper cowl ties into the firewall flange. I fabricated a .050 strap similar in concept to what you would fab up if installing camloc receptacles but instead, installed a total of 24 #8 floating nutplates around the perimeter using tooling (a nutplate jig) to assure quality and repeatability. See http://www.eaa32.org/MembersProjects/Galati/galati.htm to see the strap. The upper cowl is attached with #8 SS screws and stainless Tinnerman washers. This arrangement has worked very well on my spam can and countless other airplanes out there and in 14 years, I have not had to replace a single nutplate. Cosmetically, the screws are no better or worse looking than camlocs for less overall cost. Worn screws are a simple matter to discard and replace. Admittedly if seconds count, in a head to head race with a camlock fitted cowl, it will take you a bit longer to remove using a power screw driver. That said, in a speed race, both fastening systems would lose out to exceptionally installed hinges. I'm not absolutely certain, and I'm sure someone will offer up a dutiful correction if I'm wrong, but I *think* the EAA's Young Eagle RV-6As use screws and nutplates to attach the entire cowl. In the end, you do have a couple of viable options. Neat stuff! Sometimes just the thought of handling ice cold metal tools during a wintertime building session is enough to make you want to stay on the couch. It took three dips to get a good thickness on the handles. I also bought a can of the stuff in aerosol can to spray the grip of my air drill and maybe the rivet gun too. A 14 oz can of the dip is $7, and I found it in red, yellow, black and clear. I also noted that the bare handles where cold and tended to slip out of my grasp. because of the potential for damaging skins etc. I chose to cut lengths of the glue filled heat shrink and apply them to the cleco plier handles. After doing this I noticed the pains went away, the pliers where warmer to the hand and they stayed in hand better reducing the likelihood of dropped tool damage a bit. I had a screwdriver that seemed to hit the same nerve and the heat shrink improved that situation as well. I've called the ISP and they are looking into the problem and may do intrusive testing on the line at some point this afternoon/evening. For the most part, things seem to be working right now, but the line will drop out every once in a while for 2 to 3 minutes. This problem will effect connections to the Matronics Web server as well as distribution of List mail. I will post a follow up when the problem has been resolved... Hopefully later today. My point was why carry a special tool when a clamp that weighs only a couple of ounces, fastened to the gear leg, will work perfectly with almost any jack, in the shop or in the middle of Oklahoma. Just leave your name and number, so he can call you back. There are more ways to install an antenna wrong, than there are correct ways. It's too frustration for me to even think of all the antenna problems friends of mine have created for themselves over the years. At least by talking to Bob, you'll have a good chance of creating a good antenna installation. Jim Ayers PS I have more stories about antennas than I have heard about Ivoprop. ________________________________ Message 14 ____________________________________ Time: 06:41:56 PM PST US From: "Brian Denk" Subject: Re: RV-List: more comfy tools --> RV-List message posted by: "Brian Denk" >High Brian, > >Another option for comfy tools: >Early on in my quest to build my 6A (horizontal stab) I encountered severe >pain in my hand that radiated up my into arm when using the bare handled >cleco pliers. Cal we use a 60 watt bulb in a drop cord placed under the tank over night with a blanket/towel etc. draped over the top of the tank. Keeps the tank warm and a cheap hair dryer on low the next day pointed at the compressors intake. Not sure how well this would work in really cold areas. Also you can get a can of stuff that "sparkies" use to coat their tools handles just like the channel lock stuff and it comes in lots of colors. You can even mix colors on the same handle. Ya dunk it in, let it dry, cut off the end tip (1/2 or any amount you choose) and dunk the exposed area into another color and shazam you identified "your" tools.
