VERY long story short. Van's current "discount" shipper, Bullet Freight
just shipped a QB fuselage to me. They told Van's, who in turn told me,
the had a terminal where I live, in Tucson. They do not, nor do they
share an inter-line terminal with any other company here. Nor do they
own a terminal in Phoenix, which they also say they do. At the last
minute, I had to arrange a terminal, workers, fork lifts, and further
delivery of the crate to my shop. Anne at Van's was great, she called
the logistics company and had the extra money taken off the bill before
I finished writing my letter of complaint. The moral is: pay very close
attention to detail and ask a lot of question about your shipment before
hand. After the fact, Anne confirmed Bullet Freight's brochure showed 3
terminals in Arizona, which don't exist.

I must disagree.
It is *not* coming from a base of 'liberal stupidity.' You can't watch
the news for more than a few days without a new 'terrorist alert' from
the supposedly 'conservative' current administration. A few days ago the
FDA (!) released a Terrorist Alert, saying that if you cross the border
into Canada to buy properly priced drugs, you might get drugs laced with
poison by terrorists. (Analyze *that*!) The current administration is
doing everything it can to panic the citizens of this country into
allowing *any* action by law enforcement in the name of 'securing the
country from terrorism', and to panic the voters into re-electing 'for
their own protection'.
The woman writing for the Globe is obviously an idiot, possibly even a
liberal idiot, but in this case she she is the pawn of an administration
that few would label liberal.
While reading this post, I watched a news segment about the treatment of
those who publicly disagree with the current administration. It
describes multiple incidents in various cities where the Secret Service
has ordered local law enforcement to arrest individuals simply for
wearing anti-Bush t-shirts or carrying anti-Bush signs, saying that
their parade permits 'had been revoked' & they should be charged with
criminal trespass. You are now required to sign a 'loyalty oath' to
attend a speech by the president. I just read another post on this list
about the stuff going on in DC at the present.
I invite you to get your heads in analytical mode & tune in the news
channel or newspaper of your choice. Pick Fox News, if you like; most of
the stuff I'm talking about I've seen there. Whatever channel you pick,
strip off the rhetoric & analyze the facts.
Let me state clearly that I am not a Democrat nor a 'liberal'. I am a
pragmatist. My normal voting pattern in national elections is 3rd or 4th
party, as I see little difference in the actual politics of the two
mainstream parties.
I just believe that we are deceiving ourselves if we think these attacks
on our freedoms are coming from 'liberals'.

The problem with anything to do with the president's safety is in the hands
of the secret service. Their excesses stem from their numerous failures so
they always over react. They have been given "what ever it takes" to protect
the president as there are weird-dos out there besides the terrorists. There
is even a statute by which you can be arrested merely by saying that the
president should be shot or something to that effect.
When people get stirred up there is always an extremist that will kill to
try and solve the problem as they see it. Look at the abortion - anti-
abortion or the white Supremes movement. And of course, the FBI helps
these wako causes along by doing very dumb things like Ruby Ridge or Waco.

Soooooo....
The terror threat has abated!!! Good news. There are no radical Islamic
terrorists in this country ready to kill themselves and us to further their
zeal. It's all a politically motivated "stunt" to re-elect the current
president. So was 9-11 just a stunt? Was the Cole? Kobar Towers (?) the
embassy bombings?
It must be easy to be a "pragmatist" and pretend that the threat isn't real.
I have a friend that is a LtCol in Air Force (NRO) in DC visiting. We
talked a little terrorism last night over a good dinner. Other friends that
are with the FBI and the Treasury department are getting all sorts of
wonderful briefings daily. Much worse than what you're seeing on you hated
Fox News. So go ahead and vote for whomever you wish. But to assume that
the threat is concocted by the administration is simply foolish.
Enjoy that sand that you are buried beneath.

The "Washington Post" is the main news paper supporting Mr. Kerry's
Presidential Bid. The "Post" & "NY Times" are a very poor place to get real
and balanced news. A poll of the Media taken by the "Cleveland Plain
Dealer" shows 82% of writers and broadcasters consider themselves Librail
and Democrats and therefore a poor source of information and any unbiased
opinions.
I was a Democrat for years a "Zep Miller Democrat" and now am
Independent thanks to the Party's move to Socialism.

I must point out that I did not say there is no threat. I did say that
the administration is using the threat to manipulate citizens in
general, and citizens who vote, in particular.
For example, consider the Tom Ridge press conference *two days after*
the Democratic convention, notifying the public of Critical Security
Information (discovered *3 weeks before* the convention). For those who

Read the entire text to get the imbedded campaign speech from the head
of an agency that claims to be 'non-political'. If we assume that this
(3 year old) information was critical to the protection of the American
people, why was it, and the resulting security measures, withheld for an
entire month & released 2 days after the Democratic convention?
We are told, "Keep your heads in the sand, allow us to look into all
your private & business records, submit to searches authorized by
'secret courts' without notification, vote for us & we will protect you
from The Terrorists. No other effort is desired from you, except to
denounce anyone who disagrees with our policies as a Traitor." Yet those
of us with our heads *above* the sand can see that for all the freedoms
lost & all the billions of tax $ spent, we are less safe today than on

Today, the entire world hates us. This administration's actions have
already taken away many of our rights & freedoms, and its foreign policy
has radically increased the threats to our security.
Need an example? How many times in the last three years have we gone
more than a week or two without seeing news of airport 'security' being
breached?
Need another? How about our president 1st labeling North Korea, a
country *proven* to posess nuclear 'WMD' material & a delivery system,
as a member of the 'Axis of Evil', then taking no pre-emptive action
against that country as he claims is his right & duty, then swapping
insults with their obviously insane leader who has made direct threats
to use his weapons against the USA, THEN announcing that he's pulling
troops out of South Korea...
None of the horrible acts you mention involved general aviation, yet you
seem to be endorsing restrictions on our freedom to fly. (?)
My apologies to those who feel this isn't RV-related, but I feel that if
we wish to protect our right (not 'privilege', but right) to fly our
RV's, we should focus not just on 'liberals' (who control nothing in our
government at the present time), but on those who actually *are*
actively trying to take our freedoms at this moment. I care not whether
they paint themselves red or blue.
I hope that these exchanges can remain a dialog (multilog?) & not be
viewed by anyone as personal attacks.

I would like to have a status report from someone who has successfully
installed and fully tested an XCOM760. Unit must truly be from "regular
production" - - not a factory/lab or other prototype.
I have been following this product for nearly a year. I know that they have
had rollout problms with suppliers, etc. They haven't finalised the
software update capability yet - although it is probably not an issue.
I retired from the computer industry - I am used to the 100% completion
rule. Thanks for any help.

I'm familiar with the rear spar mod, CN-1, 1-4, for early 80's and older
RV-3's, which when reworked allowed for the "A" designation. What I'm
trying to find out is when/if this mod was incorporated into the RV-3 kit.
In other words, was there a certain time after which all RV-3 kits sold had
the fork-type rear spar and carry-through attach structure and no retro-work
was needed?
I've searched the archives and have found little help, although I did read a
post about the "A" designation later being dropped. Is that because the
kits being produced had the upgraded structure?

Here are some quotes from Van's RVator that shed some light on the situation.
"We have prepared modification kits which we are sending out to all RV-3 owners
requesting it. Modification kits for Type II RV-3s have already been sent out.
We are now in the process of designing a new spar for use on all future RV-3s,
and for retro-fit on under construction RV-3s." [1996]
"We are now working on redrawing the wing plans and getting the new spar into

Funny you should ask....I just installed the system from
http://www.smokingairplanes.com. I've been happily leaving long trails over
the past couple of weeks! I'll have pictures on my website soon.
The kit is THE most complete kit that I've ever seen, from anyone. Comes
with every little piece of hardware you can imagine, right down to Zip Ties,
Hose Clamps, Electrical terminals and wire.
The neat thing is that it comes with an adjustable valve where you can turn
the smoke down from "full bore" to zero, which makes the oil last longer.
Took me a whopping 2 hours to install the entire system! John, the guy who
runs that company will happily answer any questions you have, and is a real
nice guy. Tell him I sent you!

I use whatever is cheap and available. Currently I'm burning hydraulic
fluid thinned with mineral spirits (paint thinner). It's used hydraulic
fluid and I "acquired" it for next to nothing.
Here's the smoke oils to use in order of "Best First" along with cost.
MDW Aviation "Super Dri" Smoke Oil. Costs: $6-10$ per gallon (depending on
where you get it and if you can get it). Sold in barrels out of Illinois.
Leaves little to NO film on the belly.
Corvus Oil (Texaco Canopus 13), which is a concrete form release oil. Not
quite as clean as the MDW Super Dri, but a little cheaper. Costs:
$300-380.00 per 55gal barrel. Other Concrete form oils will work as well.
Transformer Oil: (Texaco Univolt) Or equivalent. This oil is as good or
better than Corvis, but at full bore can leave a little film on the belly.
Cost: $160-200 per 55gal barrel. DO NOT buy used/old transformer oil, as it
may contain PCB's which WILL kill you.
Then on down the list, you can use almost anything, but you want an oil
which is clear as possible and fairly lightweight in Viscosity. That's why
I've been thinning the hydraulic fluid somewhat. Some people use
kerosene/vegtable oil, hydraulic fluid, soy based oils, etc...
That's just been my experience with other aerobatic airplanes and now my own
"smoker"!!

My homeowner's policy (AAA Insurance) covers my airplane within my
city-owned hangar! That is, only as long as the airplane is being
constructed and is deemed unairworthy. Reason why is that until the
time the airplane is flying, in their eyes it's just a collection of
parts that are considered my personal property and that is covered no
matter where it's stored. My city even stipulated that my insurance has
to cover the "city council members and all the officers of the city" as
part of the policy, so I got AAA to add that phrase to my homeowner's
policy.
