I, personally, think the lowrance 1000/2000C choice is a no brainer.
Don't know why you would buy anything else.

do not archive. they are everywhere! i hadn't looked in a while and nice
to see the price is that low now for what you get! I thought they would raise
the price when they added HAT awareness a la 296.

Doug, don't know anything about the Lowrance, but I have the Garmin 196 and I
couldn't be happier! Before that I had the color Garmin 295 and it was
unreadable in bright sunlight, so I wouldn't recommend it and, the new Garmin 296
may have the same issues.

Doug,
I just received an Anywhere Map with XM weather system, running on an IPAQ 5500.
I also agree that these systems will transform flying. I only have a few hours
experience with it, all in sunlight. It is quite readable, but, with my
dark sunglasses on, the IPAQ needs to also be in the sun for me to see it. Without
sunglasses, it is no problem.

Doug,
On board WX may be a factor to consider in your purchase. I did a demo on
WX worx weather for an article for IFR magazine. This is a big deal! It is
real, it works, and in a few years it will be nearly as common as GPS and
everybit as useful.
I went to OSH to buy a system to display WX weather. I came home confused.
After that, I tried an Ipaq that belonged to a friend, with anywhere map and
WX Worx weather. I thought it would be great in the RV, but I was very
disappointed. the screen was hard to read, I don't think a mounted Ipaq
would work, because I had to tilt it to deal with glare.
The anywheremap software may work ok, but when you put the wx on the map, it
overloads the processor.
I tried a fujitsu p-600 with an ADR screen upgrade, and it is really cool,
but it is a $4000 600mhz out of date tablet pc.
Being true to my Dutch heritage, I just bought a fujitsu p600f on ebay for
$600 to display WX worx. I made a little box with the reciever, USB hub to
split the GPS/wx data, the power supply for the tablet pc.
The 600F has a transflective display. if you move it around, it is always
readable, the processor is slow but acceptable, the WXworx software works
really well, but it seems to be a processor hog. The recommend a 1gig
machine and the fujitsu is 600mhz.
The WX worx software with a GPS doesn't replace a handheld GPS, it just
tells you speed and heading and that is all. Other companies have and are
creating software to run on the PC platform, and I may upgrade, but I will
still have a battery powered handheld GPS onboard anytime I am IFR. ( I
just bought a lowrance airmap 500 and I love it!) I have flown with the 196
and 296 and they are both great units, I like the small size of the 500 and
the fact that it runs over 10hrs on 2 AA bats.
I have flown 3 trips with the fujistu, and I am really happy with it. It is
like having the ADDS weather site in your cockpit. One thing about it, an
autopilot would be almost mandatory, because it captivates alot of
attention, but it is GREAT information!

Hi Doug-
I would definately ask Control Vision if they guarantee the same
functionality using the Dell as they do with the iPAQ. I'm using a pair of Dell
X5s in my
panel running PCFlightSystems EFIS on one and NavGPS on the other- the nav
uses a Garmin 35 and the whole thing is integrated into one system. It all
works quite well except there are a number of the features such as HITS and the
air data interface that do not work. PCFlightSystems has been telling me the
Dell serial interface is somehow "different" from HP and that they are working
to resolve the problems, but still no updates since OSH.
Perhaps CV has this resolved, or the X30 is fully compatible, but I'd sure
ask!

The Lowrance 1000/2000 looks interesting. Anyone have direct use experience
with the lowrance products (Dave)? How fast is it? Example - my old Garmin
Pilot III is annoyingly slow to regen the map when panning. The 196 has
almost no delay in regen when panning across the map.
Thanks

I have a 295 mounted in the panel of my -7A, and have no trouble reading it
in bright sunlight. It is mounted high enough that the glareshield shades it.
I have it just to the right of center in Vans prepunched panel and both of us
can see it fine. I was not going to chime in, but had to let you know that
you can read it if it is in the shade. No WX or terrain data though.

Ditto on the 196. I had the color 295 previously, but it had a big
appetite for batteries, the screen was marginal in sunlight, and it was a
little slow. The 196 has none of these issues and generally kicks butt,
and I don't miss the color of the 295 at all.

I can vouch for the readability of the Garmin 296. I haven't flown with it yet
so can't vouch for the aviation functionality. I bought a 196 and used if for
a couple of road trips. I liked it so much I sold it and bought the 296. I have
since used the 296 on a road trip and the display is definitely readable in
all conditions. It even has the reverse display feature like some of the other
Garmin products for night. I haven't had any other color GPS so I can't offer
a direct comparison. I do have an iPaq 5000 series and I would say the 296 display
is better in some conditions.

Seeing that this subject needs one more voice :-), I have been flying with
a Garmin 295 in my Tomahawk and a 296 in the Mooney. I also have an IPAQ.
I find them all adequately readable. The 296 screen is more reflective than
the others, but it is very bright. I do have a reliability problem with the
IPAQ in that it is sensitive to voltage and can reboot on it's own. If I
had to pick one, it would be the 296 by a small margin. I'd like to have
the additional features of the IPAQ in one unit, but it is better for me to
use two units and not switch so much between functions. I favor the Garmin
units because I put reliability first.

Doug, I have been using AWM with a 3765 for nearly three years. The AWM
software/iPAG is a good option with many unique features for the pilot
that is comfortable with using a computer in the cabin.
I recently purchased a Dell X30 and think it represents a very good
value and am pleased with it. The old 3765 was retired to full-time
service in the RV-6 since the battery had just about expired. It stays
powered up continuously on the aircraft battery so the software won't
get dumped.
Even though the X30 isn't being used for AWM, I use it on the car with
Street Atlas and a Radio Shack DigiTraveler GPS. You can get a GPS cable
for the X30 here:
http://pc-mobile.net/ax3.htm
I got the PX3GSP version so the X30 could be powered by the car battery
cable. I use the Garmin GPS35 in the RV-6 which is a fantastic receiver.
However, you probably want to check out the newer Garmin GPS18 PC which
should perform as well at a lower price:
http://www.gpscity.com/gps/brados/2452.1.9335267956618175890/template.html
I recommend you hard wire some connections to the avionics bus so you
can eliminate some of the cords and connections. The GPS will work fine
on 12vdc but you need to be aware the X30 needs 5vdc so don't wire it
directly to the bus!! You can either whip up a little power converter or
hack the car cord. Since you are an engineer I suspect you can figure
all this out...... ;-)
You will find the X30/GarminGPS combo to be a robust rig with a ton of
features that is continuously upgradeable.
Now, having said all that, I am considering replacing both the 3765 and
Lowrance 100 in the RV-6 with Lowrance's really cool Airmap 1000. The
display on this thing is BIG and that is good for my increasingly
hyperopic eyes. :-)
Those who are considering one of the Lowrance units can download a
simulator to run on a PC so you can play with the features:

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
IMO....
What most folks don't consider about wood props is LACK of FLYWHEEL MASS
while spinning their Lycomings. I have owned and run both the wood
Pacesetter 200 and Sensenich 70CM props on my RV-3. The wood prop can be
just as smooth and vibrationless as the 70CM.... if you ADD FLYWHEEL MASS.
In my case, I use 12 lbs of weight added to the flywheel in combination with
my Pacesetter 200 prop (not to be confused with the high priced harmonic
damper manufactured by the same source). The additional weight combined with
the wood prop, smoothes out the engine power pulses to where they are a non
issue for me. The power pulses coursing through the airframe use to drive me
absolutely bonkers. The mass also allows the idle to be lower and
smoother.... adding to brake life when taxiing and shorting landings.
P.S.
If I'm wrong, don't confuse me with facts.
Let me enjoy the illusion. <g>

Jim Irwins President of Aircraft Spruce has asked me
to post this for him. Thank You...
I noticed your posting to the RV Group on Aircraft
Spruce's price being higher than others on the
KLX-135A, and you were absolutely correct. We had the
incorrect price on our web-site, and it has been
corrected from $2729 to $2475 which is quite
competitive. We asked Honeywell how Great Lakes could
offer it at $2195 (below our cost) and their only
guess was that they must be trying to move out old
stock since they have not purchased any in several
years.

Jim Irwin

Very cool! Sad end for a great airframe though. An old friend of mine
worked on exactly the same project at Sandia National Labs here in
Albuquerque. Told me the largest piece after the test was no larger than a
dollar bill. It just vaporized. Used solid rocket fuel to provide the
motivation down the rail. Brought a piece of it home and lit it off in the
backyard. WOW....impressive stuff!

Better than using them as drones, which is what we're doing now. :<
Guess it's better than letting them rot in a museum somewhere... I suppose...

I just received my Oregon Aero seats for my RV6A that I sent to Abby Erdmann
at Flightline Interiors.
I can't say enough about how pleased I am with her work. It is FIRST CLASS.
She finished them soon than promised, and the work is flawless.
Thank you, Abby, for a job well done !!

Thanks for the report. What's the difference between her seat cushions and
the Oregon Aero?

It clearly shows why the flight surgeons told us, "If you have to crash, do
so over 350 Knots. Because by the time your nerves want to display pain,
you won't be there to get the message."
Why yes, fighter pilot humor is very black. :-)

The difference is in the upholstery...Abby upholstered the Oregon Aero
cushions for me...$350 for two seats. Oregon Aero wanted $375 EACH...a big
difference.
Abby also sells her own seat cushions which I didn't know.

Haven't heard much on readability at night. I have a Garmin 196 in my -6.
My only complain is it is much too bright at the lowest setting at night. I
even tried to put a sheet of cling-on plastic of the darkest shade and was
still too bright to my taste. My hangar mate has a 295. His cockpit glows
during night flights.

yet so can't vouch for the aviation functionality. I bought a 196 and used
if for a couple of road trips. I liked it so much I sold it and bought the
296. I have since used the 296 on a road trip and the display is definitely
readable in all conditions. It even has the reverse display feature like
some of the other Garmin products for night. I haven't had any other color
GPS so I can't offer a direct comparison. I do have an iPaq 5000 series and
I would say the 296 display is better in some conditions.

Unfortunately, I see in the "OUR MISSION" section that hearing protection is
not part of the mission. At least some of the photos show some people
wearing earplugs...when squeezing rivets or clecoing...hm...
At least in the "OUR VISION" section the guy is wearing eye protection. ;-)
