Prior to this I had sent 2 or 3 other emails inquiring about my order with no answer. I wasn't aware that Spruce had them in stock, but I'm not sure I want one after I found out how it operates. Note in the text below how the flip-flop and memory functions work on this radio. The short of it is that in memory mode you can't use the dual-watch function amongst other shortcomings. > -----Original Message----- > From: Keck, David > Sent: Tuesday, October 05, 2004 9:01 AM > To: 'info@xcom760.com' > Subject: Inquiry from the XCOM website and feedback on operation > > Hello, > > I placed my order in January 2003. Can you tell me approximately when my radio will ship? > > I was reading the manual for the Xcom and playing with the "Radio Operation" simulator and I found that there is no DUAL WATCH in memory mode. I thought for sure the way the radio would work in MEM mode was that one would scroll through the STBY frequency (which would be in DUAL WATCH during MEM mode) and then would be able to FLIP-FLOP that frequency to the active frequency. This is how every other radio, aviation or HAM, with FLIP-FLOP that I have used operates. > > I am installing this radio in a helicopter and will be installing the remote function to control the radio from the hat switch on the stick. What I was expecting was that I would put the radio in DUAL WATCH and be able to remotely scroll through the STBY frequencies in MEMORY mode and be able to monitor that STBY frequency when I near an airport and then remotely FLIP-FLOP that STBY frequency to the ACTIVE frequency and never touch the radio. > > The way I see it is that the workload of touching the radio increases with the way you have the MEM and DUAL WATCH functions set up. If I want to use the radio the way I mentioned in the above paragraph, I will not be able to use the MEM or remote function at all and I will have to fumble around with touching the radio to change frequencies, which makes the remote functionality and MEM completely useless in DUAL WATCH mode. > > I see in the manual that one can transfer the MEM frequency to the FLIP-FLOP screen. This is somewhat of a redeeming factor but still adds workload by adding steps where one needs to touch the radio. > > To sum it up, the MEM mode should be considered the "main" mode and DUAL WATCH, and FLIP-FLOP should work in this mode. Once in MEM mode, one should not need to touch the radio for any frequency that is stored in memory and we should still be able to use DUAL WATCH and FLIP-FLOP. > > In addition: > I thought there would be a SCAN function. > > I thought one would be able to label a frequency that is stored in memory. That is the appeal of an alpha-numeric display, on par with alpha-numeric feedback for mode setting. Who really cares what channel number a frequency is stored in if one has to recognize what ATC facility the frequency belongs to? There is little value added by displaying a channel number. > > Thanks, > > Dave Keck > do not archive ________________________________ Message 14 ____________________________________ Time: 08:19:28 AM PST US From: Bill VonDane Subject: Re: RV-List: Michael Coates & XCOM 760 --> RV-List message posted by: Bill VonDane FYI... You need to be vicious about the BP you're willing to accept. I was getting into the 125/95 range and decided that was enough. I'm now 105/75 and 20 lbs light. T The big secret--there isn't one. Just started power-walking 10 minutes, then 20, then 30, then 40 minutes a day. That's a LOT, but after getting to the good numbers, you can slack back to 40 minutes 3-4 times a week to maintain condition. Knock off the Big Macs, fries and sugar-water colas, and wa-lah, you're there. If you walk in the evening, you can get a walk-man and listen to the talk-radio political hacks--that'll drive your blood pressure back up, but only temporarily. Meds are bad medicine--only as a last resort. Been there, done that. I found a lot of very useful advice in the comments. I think the biggest thing I can do is lose weight and start getting serious about exercising. Lower your BP by lowering your weight. But you don't need to go on a diet or exercise yourself to ruin. It can be done by proper diet part of which Chuck mentions. Cut out the french fries, butter and bread/rolls/donuts/ and sugared pop for a good starter. I think it is better to read up on proper nutrition before reducing your intake. One of my great resources and motivator is the Calorie Restriction Society. They have a great website in my opinion. Their goal is to restrict calories in order to improve life. I can attest to this after 6 months of use. I feel much better, BP has dropped to 117 over 76 and my flexibility has improved remarkably and my weight has also come down a bit over 20 lbs. The goal of the CR Society is not just to lose weight but that is a result if you change your life of eating better foods. Below is a reference for anyone interested in learning more. I figure I can carry 4 more gallons of fuel at no addition gross weight. The interesting thing is I do not feel hungry with CR even though I eat less but this is all dependent on me eating quality foods. If, for instance I eat a donut, I will get a sugar pike reaction just like anyone else and be hungry a couple hours later. If I don't put this type of junk food in my system, I really don't get hungry that much. Try this and click on "how to" and "getting started" to get a good idea of what this might do for you. http://www.calorierestriction.org/ Indiana Larry, RV7 TipUp "SunSeeker" The sincerest satisfactions in life come in doing and not dodging duty; in meeting and solving problems, in facing facts; in flying a virgin plane never flown before. - Richard L. You might also try Summit Racing. They have aluminum ones that I much prefer - they may be marginally more than the plastic but still very cheap and they seal much better. They've also got AN fittings and nifty vice pads to hold the hose fitting when you're making up hoses. Thanks, Charlie Charlie: I didn't get an "official opinion" on them, beyond simply passing my physical with them the last two times. I tried to read whatever they put in front of me with contacts in and with them out. I did not conceal the fact that I was wearing contacts, but did not mention the bifocal nature of the right lens to anyone. I made a passing score both for near and at distance with the contacts in, and as far as I am concerned, that is all that counts. YMMV. -BB ________________________________ Message 30 ____________________________________ Time: 08:34:37 PM PST US From: "Larry Bowen" Subject: RE: RV-List: Jeff Rose Wiring question --> RV-List message posted by: "Larry Bowen" Red is + Blank is - Green is MAP - Larry Bowen Larry@BowenAero.com http://BowenAero.com > -----Original Message----- > From: Jerry Calvert [mailto:rv6@cox.net] > Sent: Monday, October 11, 2004 3:12 PM > To: rv-list@matronics.com > Subject: RV-List: Jeff Rose Wiring question > > --> RV-List message posted by: "Jerry Calvert" > > I unplugged the 3 wires from the manifold pressure module on > the Jeff Rose Ignition and cannot remember which prongs they > go on. Have a close vision one in my right eye for reading and a far one in the other for distance. They are great. Wouldn't give them up for nothing. Yes, I still carry around a pair of 1.5 reading glasses for the dim areas and for use as safety glasses. It took about a week for my eyes to get used to them and for my brain to get it's act together. As far as official, my AME said he didn't care. I only have a 3rd class medical though. If I'm flying I have to use the reading glasses for the charts though. They cost more, about double. My eye doctor said I'd probably only be able to use them for about 4-8 years (I've used them for 3 years now) as the old eyes change as the years pile on. 53 now. End of report I wouldn't be without them. Good day Art B.
