Its easier on the starter to turn it over by hand! I am concerned that the
unloaded starter may turn up too many RPM. If you can get oil pressure by hand
it would be better, that's all.

If you are in the market for something like the Lowrance 2000, be sure to
compare the EKP-IV. At 1399$ it's the hands down winner in the larger screen
market GPS. This new unit from C-MAP has terrain mapping like a large Garmin
296 and it can be configured to display horz. or vertical (landscape or
portrait) mode. Lends itself as a built-in dash/panel unit to. I got one if
you haven't guessed by now....

Ah yes, those guys. If you want the plane quiet from the out side, may I
suggest the Whirlwind 151 3 blade prop and elect ignition. The prop is very
quiet and the ignition keeps all the burning in the combustion chamber
where it belongs. With mags the burning exhaust is still burning in the
exhaust pipes creating noise. People tell me that my plane sounds like a
car engine on take off its so smooth and quiet compared to a standard set up.

I also am running the Van's 65 amp alternator with the EXP Bus. The only
thing I had to do is bypass the on-board master solenoid and use a standard
Van's master. The instructions were clearly laid out in the EXP-Bus
instructions. But I have had no problems with this setup since new, now
185+ hours.

Anyone know where to get replacement parts for the heat muff Vetterman sends

ends that holds the end pieces together. I tried Vetterman but he's still

Subject: | RV6A QB wing skins |
--> RV-List message posted by: "Ralph E. Capen" <recapen@earthlink.net>
I am finally getting ready to close my wings but in measuring prior to drilling
the skin holes I found something of great concern to me.
Looking at drawing 21 (w chg 14), I can see that the outboard skin now goes on
top of the inboard skin and overlaps the inboard skin and the supporting rib below
with its inboard side at station 63.5.
Looking at drawing 10 (w chg 9), I can see that the outboard rib is reversed and
the inboard side is at station 125.375.
The distance between the two stations is 61.875'. With an additional .625" to
cover the outboard rib and an additional .625" for the wingtip attachment extension
provides a total span distance of 63.125".
These are all verifyable by measurement and calculations and match the plans to
the wings. The lower wing skins measure to 63.125" also.
My issue of concern is that the skins provided are only 63" long. If I drill with
proper edge distance for the rib at station 63.5, there will not be enough
extension to properly mount the wingtips. If I drill for proper wingtip installation,
I will end up with incorrect edge distance when attaching to the rib
at station 63.5 or incorrect edge distance on the inboard edge of the skin itself.
I am not comfortable with either of these compromises for this structure.
Has anyone else experienced this? What did you do? I have sent a note to Van's
asking for longer skins - no answer yet.

wait for his system. He has a very good reputation for exhaust systems.

And it's about the minimum easily detected change in perceived loudness.
(1 dB is the theoretical minimum for young healthy ears in a 'controlled
environment'.)
A 10 db change (a *10 or /10 change) is perceived as a doubling or
halving of sound level.
So... 8 dB is indeed significant both outside & inside the cockpit. I'll
bet prop noise will be worse than engine noise if he can achieve that
reduction.

With no compression (after you remove a plug from each cylinder), the loads
on the bearings are virtually nonexistant, so unless you're on a workout

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
True, 8 db is significant in absolute terms.
But, to be fair...
3 db is not a great difference to the human ear.
If you're not paying careful attention, the difference can be missed.

I ordered the D10A in June, Knowing it was going to be awhile as it
was not even out yet.
I got mine in late September. I got it through Wick's with a small
discount and no billing to the credit card until it was shipped. It is
wired up and seems to work great. I got the install kit from Stein- air
with lots of extra crimp pins. Tnx Stein. I will be very happy with it.
I just need the rest of the plane built around it now..

RV'ers,
Because of a serious vision problem , I am having to give up RV building (and flying)
.
I am offering my collection of tools for sale. They have built 5 RV's and are
what you really need to do the job.
The collection is essentially the same as that listed in Avery's catalog (for 2K)
with a few minor omissions and a lot of major additions. Extra stuff :
Pneumatic squeezer with adjustable set holder
3 yokes for above, 3" ,2" ,and a 1" thin nose no-hole yoke
17 extra bucking bars
pneumatic angle drill ( this one is old and leaks air but still works fine)
big collection of 1/4-28 bits
metal shrinker
pneumatic pop rivet puller (in addition to the hand puller)
rivet cutter
#1 unibit
6 stop counter sink cages
# 8 plate nut drill jig
#30 & #40 strap duplicators
swivel deburring tool
angle meter
Adel hand nibbler
pneumatic nibbler
Instrument hole punch (does both 3 1/8 and 2 1/4 holes)
canopy skin flanging tool
Parker tubing flaring tool
Imperial 1/4" tubing bender
Ridgid 3/8" tubing bender These are top quality and do not deform or mark the
tubing like the cheap ones.
6" throatless bench shear
4" Beverly bench shear
1/4, 3/8, & 1/2 Aeroquip hose mandrels
3 toggle clamps
extra straight tin snips
24" box & pan brake
Craftsman 2.4 Amp Industrial die grinder (1/4" collet chuck)
Tubing cutter
#8 rivnut puller
All for$2K Please reply off list if interested. I would very much prefer to sell
this to a Florida builder just starting out as shipping would be a real problem
for me
Oh yes, do not archive

Bill, so sorry to hear of the vision problem that is requiring you to
retire from RVing. Many thanks for the wonderful contributions you have
made to our corner of aviation.
By the way, your uEncoder is still going strong. :-)
Best wishes for whatever endeavors you decide to pursue,

If you are in the market for something like the Lowrance 2000, be sure to
compare the EKP-IV. At 1399$ it's the hands down winner in the larger screen
market GPS. This new unit from C-MAP has terrain mapping like a large Garmin
296 and it can be configured to display horz. or vertical (landscape or
portrait) mode. Lends itself as a built-in dash/panel unit to. I got one if
you haven't guessed by now....

Mike, I have an Airmap 100 driving an EZ-Pilot, and the hookup should be
the same with the DigiTrak. Take a look at page two of the DigiTrak manual:
http://www.trutrakflightsystems.com/documents/Digitrakinstall.pdf
P101, pin 3 is the serial data input on the DigiTrak. Now check out the
Airmap 100 manual, page 59:
http://www.lowrance.com/Manuals/Files/AM100_0145-63.pdf
The white wire in the optional power/data cable is the one that feeds
NMEA data to P101, pin 3 of the DigiTrak. Follow the Airmap instructions
for activating NMEA data transmission and you should be good to go.
Here is one source for the cable:

Enjoy your new autopilot!

Subject: | FYI Questions answered about GRT EFIS - VERY LONG |
--> RV-List message posted by: "Bill Schlatterer" <billschlatterer@sbcglobal.net>
I sent Todd at GRT a lot of questions and he not only answered but called to
discuss my lack of knowledge ;o( which I greatly appreciated. I thought
that I might share my lessons with the list in case anyone was afraid of
asking dumb questions. I may have missed something pertinent so please feel
free to point it out. In general, I was very impressed with their openness
and apparent sincerity. Customer service with these kind of systems is very
important and 100% dependent on the individuals who own/operate the company.
Also, I am under the impression that there are few problems with the GRT
systems. Would be interested in hearing good or bad stories.
Couple of interesting notes. GRTs panel displays and AHRS are independent
of each other. I am looking at the two display single AHRS version with the
EIS 4000 engine monitor and this is kinda important to me. If you lose the
AHRS, you still have AS, ALT, and Dg on the display because they are
independent of the AHRS. The GPS drives both displays so loss of the AHRS
or either display still leaves the GPS and one display intact. Since you
would be using one in place of a nav head or HSI, it is good to know that
loss of the AHRS still leaves the nav heads functional which could still
leave you an ILS LOC option. Not sure about the primary AI flight display .
Highway in the Sky information is derived from the GPS and BARO information
and operates independently of the VOR. Vertical guidance is a function of
the altimeter and GPS. HITS can be turned off or on while using HSI display
for ILS approaches.
Although they don't have true synthetic vision in the PFD display they do
show airports which could be very helpful even for VFR approaches. They
will have terrain in MAP mode.
Unlike most other small display EFIS systems, theirs allows for split screen
so that you can get PFD/HSI PFD/MAP PFD/Engine Monitor and other various
combinations on a single display. Since the display is not dependent on the
AHRS, you would still have a lot of functionality even with the AHRS down.

Subject: And more Questions for GRT
Todd, just another series of never ending questions. Now that I am thinking
seriously about the dual GRTs,(single AD computer) a lot of things pop to
mind,... what little I have left :o). These are hair splitting but unless
you are there flying the system, there is no way for me to know without
asking.
Does the GNS430 just provide info to your display which you format or does
it display just like the 430?
>>>> Most GPS systems only send data elements and are remapped to the
display. GRT remaps the GPS data stream so it may not look like the GNS430.
If I choose your GPS as an option, can I display it on the #1 screen and
data from the GNS430 on the #2 at the same time. In other words, can I use
the #1 monitor for your GPS and the #2 for the 430 coupled to the AP for IFR
approaches?
>>>> YES
Will they both display traffic data from the GTX330 at the same time? Will
there be any extra cost to upgrade or is this just a planned enhancement
that comes with the normal upgrade process?
>>>> Missed that one!
Probably a stupid question but I am assuming that since there is only one
AHRS computer, what happens if you choose the same screen on both monitors
at the same time. I would assume that all changes mirrored on the other.
For instance, lets say that I have the PFD and MAP on #1 in split screen
mode and the MAP on #2 in full screen mode. If I am adjusting the map view
on #1, what is happening on #2?
>>>> Screens are independent so that with only one GPS, you can mess with
one while your passenger doodles with the other as long as you don't change
the baro. The views are independent but changes like BARO are mirrored.
Heading changes using the bug would be mirrored but the views would not. I
take this to mean that all of the views are independent but corrective
actions/changes are mirrored.
Another dumb one, but I assume that if we lose the AHRS computer, we lose
EFIS on both screens but would you still get things like altitude, Airspeed,
heading, etc that are basically mechanical reporting processes. What
happens to reporting from the EIS which also gives altitude and airspeed?
Assuming the displays are still up but the AHRS is down, what is left?
>>>> Displays are independent of AHRS. Loss of AHRS still leaves basic AS,
ALT, and DG functions as long as displays are powered up. GPS would
continue to work and HSI functions driven by VOR/LOC would still work.
What happens to the display of the GPS if you loose the AHRS computer? Does
the world just go dark or is there some residual things that would come from
elsewhere like the EIS. >>>> see above
Will the terrain display in map mode look like the terrain display you see
on the Garmin 296. It appears to have features, in color, and look
something like a chart? When will it be available? >>>> Roughly will look
like that, available 05 at no charge
I understand that your GPS will not be approach certified but when will it
have the approaches included as a VFR reference? >>>> Yes 05 also no charge
Assuming that I have the GNS 430 and a Tru-Trak Digi IIVS which should
handle vertical speed descents, will I be able to couple the AP and have it
fly the whole approach including the ILS descent while showing the needles
and HITS for reference?
>>>> Yes but vertical descent on the II VS is not vertical guidance.
Vertical Guidance would need the II VSG.
What would the difference be using your GPS instead of the 430? At what
point would I have to take over using your GPS compared to the 430. Let's
just assume it's a hazy day and either would be legal to fly? >>> our GPS
not IFR certified but will take you to the final approach fix/course.
Is the ARNIC 429 adapter needed for the GNS 430 or SL30 and is it extra or
included in the base price $8995? >>>> The ARNIC 429 is not needed with the
SL30 but is for the GNS430. Any use of vertical guidance will require the
ARNIC 429 adapter and is extra.
The materials says that this also enables GPSS steering with the Tru-Track
but GPSS steering is an option with Tru-Trak as well. Are you saying that
you don't need the GPSS steering option from Tru-Trak and that your GPS plus
the ARINC 429 adapter will provide GPSS steering ability with the TT? >>>>
Their system anticipates the turns and reduces the need for GPSS steering.
If I understood the answer, they don't think you need it unless you are
wanting real close vertical guidance and then you need VGPSS. Fuzzy
question ;o(
When using the system coupled with a vertical speed autopilot Digi II VS,
do you get audible altitude alerts at selected altitudes,... 100 to go,
etc??
>>>> forgot the answer ;o(.
Where does your database come from and what is the cost?
>>>> their database comes from the same government data used in the Jep
database but does not include approach info yet. There is no charge but it
is only updated annually, maybe changing to quarterly.
What happens if you guys go away next year ?? Where will I get my DB update
from?
>>> We would assume that the company would not go out of business but could
be sold. Obviously the buyer would be interested in keeping up the customer
base so it is doubtful that there would be any interruption. Also we have
sold some 12,000 EIS units and continue to support them and that is a
continuing revenue stream. Todd says that they predicated their business
model on sales of 60 units per year and are booking at an annual rate of
about 300 per year at this point. They have about 60 systems flying and
hear very little negative from any of them. (not sure how you would know but
we don't see much negative on the lists)
