I received this email just this morning from Mr. Michael Coates. Per his request
I am passing this along. Pay special attention to the problems he has with
email and spam filters. This is exactly what I was talking about in my posting
last week. When communication absolutely has to get through, pick up the phone.
Anyway, preach mode off, here's Michael's message:

Hello Scott
I am hoping you can forward this to the RV list for me, i have tried to send info
but it bounces as i am not a member.
Recently there have been a few messages passed to me saying i am not promptly responding
to emails... many times i just dont get them.... Unfortunately with
a business site and the same email addresses for the past 8 years we get more
than 1600 spam messages each and every day and about 200 real messages. We have
employed special spam filtering on the mail servers which drops it down to
about 500 on our computer but it occasionally knocks off a few valid emails from
customers, until someone finds a way to get around this it is an unfortunate
fact of life we have to live with.... I think we will have to go back to fax
for reliability....
The XCOM has been shipping recently with more than 200 units being supplied to
customers, we do have about 50 orders placed some time ago by customers, some
almost two years old and we cant make contact with them..... hopefully this mail
on the list will help them contact us again. The email details are wrong or
have changed, credit card info expired and phones disconnected as people have
moved house.... Seems these are the ones being the most vocal but until they
supply details we cant contact them. If they are on this list and have an order
please email me on a 'new' email address info@xcomavionics.com
I have been away for the past 2 weeks doing a trip we did last year called "Flight for Sight" last year we raised $60,000 for the Royal Blind Foundation, this year $100,000 which is a great effort. http://www.mcp.com.au/sinus/flight-for-sight/rbf-trip.html For details on last years trip.
The good old email let us down again while we were away, the auto responder didnt
work and our mail was meant to be forwarded to an address we could access while
travelling but it only sent a few through each day and then stopped...
We are here and ready to communicate, but unless you supply your current contact
details we cant really help you.
PS our phone and fax always work !!
Thanks for passing this mail on. Michael

As a follow up to my message looking for a copy of the manual for the
CP-214 squeezer, is there such a thing as a rivet gap gauge that makes
it easy to set the gap for a specific rivet length? I have seen the
notes about 1.5 turns of the adjustable set for each change in rivet
length but am looking for an easier way to set the gap for the first rivet.

I can sympathise with Mr. Coates and this is not meant as a slam on him only a
suggestion. We receive well over 3000 spam a day. Some of these can be deleted
immediately based on specific content. The rest are scanned by some poor schmuck
in the IT department to make sure that no legitimate emails were captured.
I've done this many times myself and always feel like I need a shower to clean
the filth off. Did I just call myself a schmuck? Anyway, this task falls upon
the IT department because we are in a position to tweak the spam filter to increase
the good to spam ratio. Yes, this does take some time, but we've decided
the hour or two a day overall that we spend doing this is worth the effort.
We also quickly found out that mentioning how much spam we get a day was of
little consolation to our customers when we missed one of their emails. Unfortunately,
spam has become a major issue that is not going to go away anytime soon.
We could easily blame this on the customer for a
variaty of reasons such as using an ISP that is known for spam, but that accomplishes
nothing.

Seeing there is not much in the archives, I pose the questions:
How many folks flying with FADEC?
What do you think of it? (Do it again?)
What is the down side?
According to Aerosance, there are RVs flying with angle valve 360s and
FADEC. Does anyone have FADEC on their 200 hp angle valve? How's it
working.
FADEC costs an arm and a leg. I'm trying to find out if it is worth it..
Thanks to all,

I still don't get why anybody would want FADEC. I'm not knocking it, I just
can't relate to not wanting to control mixture manually. With balanced fuel
injectors, you have a huge band of possible operating conditions -- figure
the band between 150 ROP and 50 LOP gives you a fuel burn spread of a few
gallons per hour. Why not give the operator the control to play around to
suit conditions and personal preference? And you're tellin' me I gotta pay
big bucks to lose that control?
On the other hand, I do have electronic ignition but I do NOT have a "timing
knob" in my cockpit. I understand that electronics work way faster &
smarter than I do. But that's a very granular, real-time adjustment. With
something as non-granular as mixture & prop control, I gotta have my knobs.
8-)
As you can see I don't really get it. But I used to think vacuum systems
were the way to go...so I'm at least open-minded about being convinced that
FADEC is desirable in the first place, let alone worth the price!

I have an rv6 that had a vertical card compass that was attached to the vertical
post that runs from the roll bar down into the panel. The compass wouldnt work
properly at that location.....so....i removed it and set my battery powered,
built in antenna, garmin 196 up on that post. well guess what? the garmin
shuts itself down there, but works fine outside the airplane, and even away from
that center post. sure, i can move it somewhere else, but has anyone encountered
this problem?
fyi, immediately below this post i have panel-mounted a bendix/king skyforce and
comm and transponder. no apparent problems with any of these instruments.
i am running an 0360 Lyc with normal mags.
any helpful suggestions will be appreciated.

David,
We guess & squeeze a rivit by itself and ajust. We then squeeze a rivit
inplace, use the standard rivit gauge (for the size we are using) and
adjust. From then on all the rest in the line are right on.

You need to have the roll over bar demagnetized for starters. Then see what
kind of problems are left.

Tony,
Check to see which center post you have. The early ones were Chromally just
like the roll bar while the newer ones are stainless steel so that they
won't interfere with the compass.

The price seems a bit hard to reconcile
I hear the argument about losing control of mixture choices. However that is
likely balanced out somewhat with all those moments when the pilot gets
behind mixture management due to unintended mismanagement or other
distractions such as looking out the windows (flying){[;-).
`Supposedly'... The automatic control should keep the mixture and timing in
tight formation regardless of engine load.
So then, modifying prop or engine speed as preferred would still deliver the
best GPH per RPM
all the while preserving engine TBO and reducing operating costs to some
(unknown to me)degree.
At present the performance issues may, or may not justify the cost for those
of us that are among bank account challenged. I'll leave the cost versus
performance thing for others wiser than yours truly to deal with.

This might not be an EXP BUS problem. There was a long series of
discussions on the Aeroelectric-List earlier this year about
alternator "load dump". Apparently if you switch an alternator OFF
when it is producing a high current, there may be a momentary voltage
spike on the alternator output. I don't understand all the ins and
outs of the issue, but perhaps this was what happened here. It might
be interesting to post your story on the Aeroelectric List.
If this was caused by "load dump", then there must be other variables
involved too, as I suspect many other flyers have cycled the
alternator switch when the alternator is producing high load, without
frying something.

Hi Tony
If your aircraft is still in your workshop and close to fluorescent lights
(just overhead in my case) that can cause a problem, my magnetism problem
went away when I took the aircraft to airport for assembly.

I have an rv6 that had a vertical card compass that was attached to the
vertical post that runs from the roll bar down into the panel. The compass
wouldnt work properly at that location.....so....i removed it and set my
battery powered, built in antenna, garmin 196 up on that post. well guess
what? the garmin shuts itself down there, but works fine outside the
airplane, and even away from that center post. sure, i can move it
somewhere else, but has anyone encountered this problem?
fyi, immediately below this post i have panel-mounted a bendix/king skyforce
and comm and transponder. no apparent problems with any of these
instruments. i am running an 0360 Lyc with normal mags.
any helpful suggestions will be appreciated.

Hi All-
I just received my seats for our -8 from Abby Erdmann of Flightline Interiors.
WOW. 100% confor foam cushions, as opposed to the single layer of confor in
the accessory catalog. The covers are a supple synthetic leather (NOT car seat
vinyl) for well less than half what the Big Name west coast seat specialists
demand. I highly recommend her and her work. (No, I'm not affiliated, just
impressed!)
