Do watch the edge clearance. I had a problem with this,

I would check with Van's to make sure you are 100%
comfortable. You don't want something in the back of
your mind worrying you all the time.

Subject: | Proper Flap Hinge Pin Installation |
--> RV-List message posted by: "Ron Schreck" <ronschreck@webkorner.com>
While we are on the subject of hinge pins, etc. I would like to hear how other
RV-8 builders are securing the gear leg fairings to the gear legs. They are
clamped onto the gear legs fairly snuggly by the trailing edge hinge but a good
bounced landing could cause them to slip down a bit. I hesitate to drill any
holes in the gear leg for a screw. What are you all doing here?
Ron Schreck

--> RV-List message posted by: Hopperdhh@aol.com
Dale,
I don't know about the 6, maybe the aileron is hinged differently. But
for
the 7 and 8 this works. I drilled a no. 30 hole in the aileron hinge bracket
very accurately by sliding the hinge pin over to the bracket and marking
the
location on the bracket. The hinge pin needs to be about an inch or so
longer than the hinge to do this, long enough to reach within about 1/8
inch of
the aileron bracket. Then put about a 12 degree bend where the pin exits
the
hinge so that it misses the hole about 1/4 inch. (I said 1/8 inch before,
its probably more like 1/4 inch.) It is hard enough to make it start with
a
pair of pliers, it could never start by itself.
Its funny how everyone thinks they have the perfect solution! I like this
method at this place on the airplane. I would be leery of anything that
could
loosen up and fall off. Safety wire is another good way to retain hinge
pins. I use safety wire on the gear leg fairings.
The pins that retain my top cowl to the firewall kept working partway out.
The latest fix was to bend a 1/4 inch eye in each pin and use a cable tie
to
tie them together. This is just inside the oil door. We'll see how that
works out.

John, I will wager a guess. My RV6-A has an 0-360A1A with a Hartzel Prop
and must have a placard stating: "No continuous operation between 1900-2100
RPM" do to a vibration that can set up with that combination.
Perhaps your 0-320 is developing a few more HP than normal and
your are running into the same problem? Doing baffles and getting ready to
fly this spring.

I had the same problem. After talking to some one at Van's they gave
me a different solution. I cut a piece of 1/8" thick aluminum from some
angle that I had and made it long enough to take in the outboard hole
with adequate edge distance plus the the next hole inboard and drilled
it for those two bolts. I used longer bolts and bolted this extra piece
in there ontop of the existing piece of angle.
I think it's a reasonable solution, structurally, but probably weighs
many times more than your solution. I like yours better.

It is a high freq vibration that starts slowly and builds as the airspeed
and rpm drop, such as when pulling back on downwind. You feel it in the
floor, seat, stick, etc. You hear it all through the cabin, the canopy
vibrates. It is very pronounced and grows as spped & rpm drop them it will
diminish as speed and rpm go below certain parameters.

Tom,
According to the Hartzell "Type Certificate Data Sheet", the RPM
restriction on that engine/prop combination is 2000-2250. On some of the
IO's it goes to 2400.

Is there a newer compound that will allow 'sloshing' a tank without the

I had a similar problem with the one of the same holes. My work around,

specified.

Has anybody on the list successfully connected the Light speed Plasma

Light Speed instructions call for output pins 1 and 9 be connected to
terminal R and key switch terminal ground respectively. The key
switches from Van's have continuity between these two terminals for all
key switch positions (except OFF) which disables the Light Speed.

Subject: | -8A horizontal stab-to-ground distance? |
--> RV-List message posted by: czechsix@juno.com
Guys,
I sent this message yesterday but it doesn't look like it came through on
the Lists....probably Juno's fault. Anyway I'm wondering if anybody with
a finished -8A could measure the distance between the lower surface of
the horizontal stab and the ground for me. My airplane isn't quite
finished but I have an opportunity to go in on a hangar with a friend who
has a Mustang II. If his wingtip will fit under the -8A's horizontal
stab, the two planes will both fit and save us some hangar expenses. I
called Vans but they were unwilling to measure their -8A and instead
pointed me to the 3-view autocad drawing. I seriously doubt I will get a
good number off the drawing because it's not going to take into
consideration gear leg flexing, tire compression, etc. I'm sure the
stab-to-ground dimension will also very somewhat with engine/prop
configuration and loading, but if I can get one or more real-world
measurements it would help me out...
Thanks!

I need to know how to tell if a particular 12 volt Prestolite starter motor is
used with a 122 or a 149 tooth ring gear. The motor in question has 9 teeth on
its drive gear and is stamped with the following:
A/E P/N 2041
Part No. MZ4222R
For the future, does anyone know how to tell which ring gear matches a starter
by looking solely at the drive gear?
