I've gotta agree 100%. If it's wrong, it's wrong. If the government
somewhere is trying to stop people from doing something that is not
hurting other people, it behooves *all* of us to help them out. If
we don't they'll soon be coming after us, and there will be no one
to help us.
I had a 22 year old friend who had some kind of collapse while
driving a car down the highway, crashed and killed herself.
Does that mean that now all car drivers should get a medical
every year?
40,000 people a year are killed in cars each year in the US -
that's the equivalent of two RJ crashs a day. Can you imagine
what would happen to the aviation industry if two regional jets
crashed *every single day*? That's over 10 9/11s every year.
Where's the "war on car crashes?"
100,000 (conservatively) people are killed a year in hospitals
when they accidentally get the wrong medicine. Can you imagine
what would happen if one 767 crashed every day? Where's the
"war on medical errors?"
Far less than 800 per year are killed in the US in all aviation
crashes (still too many, but that's another discussion) and
typically zero are killed on the ground. How many of those were
caused by a medical problem? Very few. Where's the risk for
the general public? It's not there!
I can dream about the day that we teach our children about risk
in school. I guess today we're happy if they can read and write,
and add and subtract. I can also dream that we teach them the
consequences of inaction when other people's rights are endangered.
Enough rambling - gotta get some breakfast!

Although I disagree that there is some objective truth or reality in the
universe in which we absolutely know that there are definitively right or wrong
activities, your points and conclusions are still correct. I want to live in
a land that values personal freedom when and wherever it can, provided that
innocent life and resources are not squandered unnecessarily. I think that
industries and governments are only obligated to intervene when they can add
value to the whole and only to the degree that they must. The world is a big
place with lots of differing activities and various beliefs held to be true,
good and righteous by people. Sometimes the most commonly shared of those
beliefs are more valuable (the golden rule and to thine own self be true) and
sometimes least common (the charity of a Mother Theresa or the non-violence
of a Christ or Gandhi) at any point in history. The important thing to
remember is that we all need to live our lives in the most useful, interesting
and
productive ways we choose and we need to get along.
I would view the current FAA medical approval process as good people working
in a corrupt system that unnecessarily punishes people for situations not of
their making. We do have an obligation to take good care of ourselves, but
we cannot choose our medical condition. If we are in good enough health to
drive two ton vehicles 80 mph just inches away from similar and/or larger
vehicles being driven by inadequately trained inexperienced individuals talking
on cell phones, we should be good to go flying too. As civilian pilots, we
like to believe that we are special, but being a good pilot of a light plane is
just another learned activity that requires only proper training, experience
and the ability to make informed choices.

I have the old Ispro fuel gauges on my RV-6 and both have started to under-read.
It has progressively gotten worse so that full tanks shows 2/3 on the one and
just over half on the other. Empty goes well below the "E" . Could turbulance
have upset the calibration? Any thoughts before I have to pull the tanks.
Is there an adjustment on the gauges? can't remember as it was over 7 years ago
when I installed them!
Thanks

There were, if I remember correctly, 2 or 3 reports about the E-703 rib not lining
up on the elevator. I have experienced this exact same problem. Tried swopping
the two sides around and found that the one fits either side perfectly but
the other is definately out. I asked Vans at Oshkosh but their reply was that
it couldn't be as they were stamped out by machine. I was wondering how others
resolved the problem as I don't recall seeing any solutions published. My
fix was to shim up to 1/8" on one side of the rib. It was not too appealing,
but did manage to get the twist out (almost) Should have ordered a new one
from Van's, but being on the other side of the world, we tend to "make it fit"
rather than wait months for something that probably will get lost in the post
after paying double the value in postage, shipping and customs!
Thanks

I am not sure of my old gauges but they were not reliable. So I replaced them
with the current Van's gauges and I have about 0.6 gallons left when the needle
hits the stop at E.

I think you are talking about a Rocket: http://www.f1-rocketboy.com/index.html
He has a large screen and drives it with a small custom computer running windows and running RMS Technology Flight Planning & Moving Map Software: http://www.rmstek.com/ , since he describes how he made it and the lessons learned I think this might help.
I have every RV-8 site in my favorite list and the only thing I recall is one with
Dual GRT EFIS. I am sure there are a few Blue Mountain's out there also.
Good Luck G

Subject: | Wheel pant balancing fiasco |
--> RV-List message posted by: Ron Lee <ronlee@pcisys.net>
I tried this using lead shot in the front of each wheel pant and on the first
flight the gear leg shimmy was worst than before and even the main gear
displayed a vibration that I never noticed before.
So now I am taking beaucoup time to remove the lead shot that was
epoxied in. So if anyone does this I suggest placing the lead shot in
the nose, cover with a layer of aluminum foil then add appropriate
fiberglass to secure. Then if it does not work, a simple drill through the
fiberglass will allow the lead shot to come out easily.
