From my research between folding bikes, gas go-peds and elect scooters the winner seems to be the folding Bike. The question is what brand, model and where to buy. They are very loud and attract a lot of unwanted attention and many places outlaw them. Also the small wheels get caught in cracks, not to mention dealing with a gas/oil tank in the cockpit. Semi-dangerous, but looking for input. Electric scooters are too heavy (+40lbs) and have limited range. That leaves Bikes. The big down side of the folding bikes is the cost. They are available in several models and all have the ability to change the size of the tape, fonts, color of the tape (including clear) and color of the ink. It's one of the things I wish I had purchased early in the project. It's great for labeling your parts drawers, wires, and yes one's panel if you wish. True, the clear tape is slightly visible around the edges of the print but I found on my panel, also gray, it's not that big a deal. Just my two cents worth. My observation is that I like to be able to control the mixture manually. I can do that very inexpensively! :-D . I like the KISS principle, and the only thing that can go wrong with a manual setup (cable break) is a lot easier to troubleshoot than an automatic controller. True, it's another cable to run, but during construction that's easily accomplished. I guess with a FADEC, you can dispense with the EGT and CHT gauges since you can't control them (or can you???) but then you lose some very valuable information on how your engine is working. I don't really worry about electronic controls since cars have been doing that for years now without any disastrous results. I'm sure there have been cars parked alongside the road due to computer failures and doubt that the FADEC would cause an engine shutdown. Just my .001 pennies. I doubt that I'll be putting electronic ignition on my engine since my mags have performed so reliably and are dirt simple and easily repaired. I wonder just how much it'll cost in flying downtime and bucks to send the electronuic ignition controller back to the Mfgr. for repair???? I can get a mag rebuilt in a day. Just some thoughts and YMMV. I have a pair of these: http://www.dahon.com/marinerd7.htm which I purchased from: http://brandscycle.com/site/itemdetails.cfm?ID=2735&Catalog=39&sort=Price I fly with these in a larger airplane and have doubts that they will go into the baggage compartment of your plane. They are a great choice for folding bikes though and we fly with them often. I did a lot of looking and am really happy with the quality of this bike. At the time Brands Cycle had the best price. I gave you a link to the carrying case and would highly recommend that you get one for each bike. It will protect both the bike and interior. I have to stack one bike on top of the other in the back of my plane, they are too tall to fit side by side. The smaller bikes that you were looking at might fit the baggage compartment of a seven. The smaller the wheel size though the poorer the bike will perform on the road. I like to fly into small airports without services and find that I end up using mine on rural two lane roads that have limited shoulders. Having larger wheels can make a difference, and even the 16" wheels on the Mariner are marginal. I'm hoping I can get at least one in the baggage compartment of my six. Good luck with your choice. I sure enjoy these. Recently someone posted that they carried folders in the back of their RV. I hope they see your post and give us the details. ________________________________ Message 7 _____________________________________ Time: 07:05:22 AM PST US From: "Larry Pardue" Subject: Re: RV-List: Folding Bikes, Go-ped Elect Scooter --> RV-List message posted by: "Larry Pardue" > --> RV-List message posted by: > > Any one flying a folding bike in their RV? It is about as compact as they come and I am suspect it is the quickest and easiest of all folders to fold. It looks to me like two would fit easily in the baggage compartment of a 6 but I have not had the opportunity to try it. There could be a problem with "breakover angle" getting it in. The Brompton is very well built and rides well, but probably not nearly as well as the, more difficult to fold, Bike Fridays. The Dahons used to be of rather low quality and heavy, but it appears they have greatly improved. I have not used any of them. http://www.bromptonbicycle.co.uk/index.cfm?fuseaction=bikerange.bikerange http://www.foldabikes.com/ http://www.landofenchantmentflyin.com/ One of the neat things about the Brompton is that it is so small that, with the optional nylon cover, you can carry it into a restaurant as a large valise and no one notices it or objects. It's been over 2 years ago so I can't remember exactly how much I paid but I bought a 20" five speed folding bike at Walmart for something like 125.00. Cheapest folding bike of it's kind I had ever seen anywhere so I went ahead and bought it. It's been to OSH and back in the rear baggage compartment of my 4 with some dismantling. Also I bought a regular 24" ten speed at Walmart about eleven years ago for under 100.00 and made it fold myself. It just took an evening to do. I had never seen a 24" ten speed folder before or since. I'm not saying there isn't any. It is a tad big for an RV perhaps. I used to carry a couple folding bikes in the rear of my Cessna. Anybody curious and wants a picture of either I will be happy to send off list. do not archive > [Original Message] > From: > To: > Date: 11/25/2005 4:19:17 AM > Subject: RV-List: Folding Bikes, Go-ped Elect Scooter > > --> RV-List message posted by: > > Considering what's the best way to get around after landing. Unwilling to dismantle it, I was unable to get it over the seatback brace and wound up strapping it into to copilot seat with the stick and cushions removed. My 6 project has the slider with tip-up mod which allows much better access to the baggage compartment. You can get a bike in easily. I haven't had two bikes to try it with, but it looks tight. I'd like to try one of those full sized Montague folders, but I really doubt two of those would go. Image, being very important, needed to be addressed--it was simply unsat to be motoring around on a toy. I finally settled on a full sized mountain bike with titanium frame. A super bike but of course, it wouldn't fold unless you misjudged the size of the drop off. The bike was a piece of work getting in the back seat of a Velocity. And once in, you weren't assured of being able to get it back out. In fact that's exactly what happened to Dewe Overs. If you look on the Controller, you'll see a couple Velocities for sale. If you look closely at the green and white one, you can see a set of handle bars through the rear window. Dewe's ad says he'll 'throw in the bike'. I guess so--he's done that once already--just couldn't get it out. I solved the problem by strapping the mountain bike to the right wing. A fair word of warning, use those nylon straps to secure it. Rubber bungee cords have waaaay toooo much stretch in 'em. Now, I admit it wasn't a perfect solution. The Velo kind of yawed to the right which knocked a couple of knots off top end and when I got to where I was going, it wasn't always the mountains. I fixed both problems by tying a standard 10 speed on the left wing. Perfect. No yaw and optimum terminal transportation whether I was goin' to the mountains or the flat lands. But that wasn't the end of the benefits. Sure, it was a little more draggy, but then I didn't miss the speed brake that I often wished I'd installed. High and hot...no problem. Cut the power and you get down, with a capital "D" and right now. When I came into Knoxville TYS a couple weeks ago, I was on one mile final at 2000' agl when I cut the power and landed on the numbers. The Tower said "wow, did you say you were a Velo or a Helo." Highly recommended.
